Democrats block Senate CV Stimulus Package (1 Viewer)

I thought it was an advance payment or some such trickery. Similar to the Bush shopping 300/600 we got.

Tax people will correct me.
I never got a clear understanding on that - and that may be on purpose.

If its just a payday loan - the masses are not going to be happy when they find out.

No...I do.  I know exactly what it is.  I also know exactly how you've defined it.  You've told me yourself.  It's what allows me to observe you trying everything in your power to somehow make this different from the exact same things you were railing against just a few weeks ago.

If we go by real definitions of socialism, this package nor the most popular proposals by Bernie are that.  What isn't true is that one set of proposals IS socialist and one set ISN'T, but it's entertaining to watch you try and wish them to be different.

NONE of this sideshow changes the fact that the House passed it's legislation on to the Senate making your comment that the Dems are holding things up completely false.
Well said.  The House did its job. They might not have done the BEST job.....but they did it.

They held it up on Monday and Tuesday.  I have no idea why you suddenly think that they didn't.

But it is entertaining watching you contort yourself so much to try and spin this. I hope you have a good chiropractor.

And you still have no idea what socialism is.

Why is the GOP holding up this bill?

MCCONNELL’s office has sent Senate Republicans a draft of the emergency coronavirus bill to chiefs of staff, legislative directors and staff directors: "Will send the final final text as it’s completed/updated.”

On a GOP conference call, leadership said the text isnt final.

What changed in the bill that you don't like?

What changes were made during the compromising over the past 2 days that people are so upset about?
I don't know.

Only "big" change I see reported is oversight on the slush fund, and a prohibition on Trump businesses getting money.

Everything else seems like it has been reported for a while.  I think the Dems had been trying for additional items related to 2020 election (money for vote by mail, for example) that was dropped.  I still don't understand the details on the individual checks - stimulus money, or tax loans.

Hmm - maybe Dems did get some money for 2020 elections:

The enormous spending bill expected to be released Wednesday morning will include $400 million in election assistance, according to two sources who have seen a summary of the bill from appropriators.

From what I recall from 2009 it was an advance tax credit. If you received the full payment you didn't need to do anything on your tax return but if you were eligible and didn't receive a check you could claim the credit on the tax return.  If you received a payment and were subsequently over the income limit you did not need to pay it back.

I have no idea if this will be structured the same way.

This was my understanding when they first started talking about this last week - they referenced the Bush checks.

That was the Senate....these start in the House.  This level of information can be found in the musical genius of Schoolhouse Rock.  And to be clear, I am absolutely confident of what socialism is.  I use the dictionary definition of the word.  What you guys have bastardized it into, is a different story.  You're right have no idea what "socialism" is in that sense.  And it seems neither do you.

Yeah, i"m not sure what alternate universe our GB Bladerunner is living in

Oh, and I don't disagree at all that it wasn't the best job.  I'd go as far as saying it was a pretty crappy job, but they did it.

150M total for Kennedy Arts and National Endowment of the Arts in order to pass it.  Remember this in November people.   bacon at its finest.

And yes, there may now be a problem w the deal. *Sens* Graham, Scott, Sasse have written a statement - in their view, the bill motivates employers to fire people and put them on unemployment.

Under Senate rules, in order to vote anytime in next 4 days, every senator must agree.

Id guess quite a few places already did so with the uncertainty the last few weeks.  And some of their employees probably happy they did so they could try and collect while congress drags their feet.

You said it was a bacon bit, meaning not much money and I disagree.  The Dems force this pork in the deal in order to pass it, so yes, what I said is true.
Yes...it was a small amount of any bit of the overall budget and even that bill.  That much is statistically true.

I also would not call it waste on the arts either.

None of which is me saying I agree with it..also, until you see the whole bill...to just complain about Dems is pretty funny, even if it is expected.

So no...what you said to me about my thoughts...was not true.

to be fair, it's "The Arts" (i.e. television, movies, games, books, music, etc.) that we're all relying on right now to get through the various Shelter In Place orders in effect.
I believe I read 25M for cleaning?  Maybe I'm mistaken on that, or not, not going to go reread it.

What are they spending this money on?
Includes $25 million in funding for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. That is down from the $35 million that was included in the recent Democratic-proposed House legislation.

The Senate bill also provides $75 million to each the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. That is down from the $300 million for each that was in the House stimulus bill.

That $25 million for the Kennedy Center is designated to helping the center "prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus, domestically or internationally, including deep cleaning and information technology to improve telework capability and for operations and maintenance requirements related to the consequences of coronavirus."

The 25 mil to clean does seem excessive, that place better be sparkling

The 75 mil to the NEA could be used to do a lot of good though.  Lots of local arts around the country going to be hurting. A good investment IMO.

Can the public view the Bill? Lots of people with expertise have plenty of time for a critical review.

I think the much larger part to hold up was how the 500 Billion was to be allocated - with no oversight.
If that was the case then we wouldn't have the extra crap in it.  This was held up to get pet projects in while Americans were desperate.  There is no way to spin this in a positive light.

You keep stating something as fact...with nothing to base that on.

Sure...Id have loved to have have one without extra crap...Im betting there is crap for both sides little projects...but we will only see a few complain about what the "dems" wanted.

BTW...the 150 mil...was about their previous budget...the one Trump tried to zero out in his budget proposal not long ago I believe.

I don't think there is any real facts out there saying this was all held up because of this.
Then why were they added? There is no way this wasn't a negotiating point that held it up. You can be blind if you want but there is no reason to have added all this crap.  If the slush fund was the issue with no oversight then tell the people that and hammer that piece out.

Instead they wanted to add more and more pet projects.  Anybody that defends this is blind. If they are not voted out then American is more blind than I feared. I don't care who you vote them out for (D/R/I) but vote them out.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the initial bill had 500 Billion that was to be allocated with very little (none? Trump and Mnuchin?) oversight.

In the bill that they are working to pass that 500 Billion is now to be allocated in a different manner that seems way more sane.

I think the hold up today is on specific language on how people can or cannot be laid off and a lot of technical language.
