What did you all think of the color guy,Β Alejandro Moreno, in the Ukraine-Sweden match? I was very entertained by him and thought he did a great job but didn’t know what the consensus was from the regular watchers?

Group of death on life support
One of the big talking points for me of the Round of 16.Β  Shocking to me that not one of those 3 advanced.

So happy England won.Β  I have to give Southgate some props, his tactics ended up being spot on - Germany had a couple of chances early but they totally shutdown what Germany wanted to do.Β  I still don't like it - will be interesting to see if he essentially plays with 7 defenders against Ukraine or switches back to a 4-2-3-1.Β  That would be my preference but you can't argue with his results.Β  No goals allowed through 4 games and either formation will present trouble for Ukraine to score.

I think the consensus around here is he's not very good.Β  ESPN definitely have worse but I'm not a fan of his.

Thanks, I thought he was good at calling things and players out. Good decisions and bad decisions, but just was curious what the true soccer community thought

Has there been any explanation for Sancho's absence?
I've heard unconfirmed reports of Southgate not liking him do to poor training sessions and such. Forget where I heard it fromΒ

@OptaJoe

0.98 - England have progressed the ball upfield 0.98 metres per second in open play at #EURO2020, the lowest figure of any side during the group stage.
This post I'd call you crazy 10 yrs agoΒ

Timo at #9 is interesting. Β
Germany lost today because Timo Werner said in an interview he puts ketchup on his pasta. That's a straight Red Card right there. It's sacrilegiousΒ

Why does Zlatan not play for Sweden the last few cycles?
He retired from International play. He unretired and played a few matches leading up to this but go hurt playing with Milan 2nd to last match of the season. He tried rehab but didn't work and needed Keyhole surgery in his knee which I read was more of a clean up procedure to help his knee heel better. So he's out for the tournament he tried to so desperately come back for.Β

I'm use to Moreno and Twellman only because they use to be my local team the Union color guys. They aren't great but certainly not the worst of the worst either. Moreno is ok and I do like some of his little quarks at times.Β

I dislike him more than any other color guy, including Twellman. He's incredibly condescending and I don't think he offers that much analysis.Β

I will say, however, that he wasn't so annoying in that match today. Maybe because he doesn't know enough about the players to talk about random narratives. ESPN loves to have him on Copa Del Rey matches and he really grates on me there.

I miss the days when a defender could clear a ball and not get a red card when the attacker runs into him and slo mo replays make the collision look extra bad.....

I get the new thinking... But yeah- he won the ball cleanly and early, but the challenge had his studs up and a bit high after the fact.Β

There was some EPL play this season where the defender cleared the ball and got a similar red on the follow through.Β

Yes, they are trying to eliminate dangerous tackles and major injuries (Keane v Halaand) but if you are kicking a ball long or high, where are your studs going to go?Β  Why are they penalizing a good clearance or a tackle because it looks bad in slo mo?Β  Β

You used to be able to go through the ball and light up the man.Β  Hard crunching tackles can rally a team.Β  Cards used to be for intent to injure not hard tackles.Β Β

If the EPL one is the one I'm thinking of that was an utter disgrace.Β  Might have been CL though.Β  Defender clears the ball and as he lands the attacker runs under him and the defender lands on his opponent's calf.Β  Studs down, no intent, all within a legal clearance of the ball.Β  All within a normal expected motion (like handballs).Β  Shouldn't have been a foul let alone a card of any color.

"Studs Up" is such a lazy call these days. I've seen some where they called "studs up" simply because you could see the bottom of his boots.Β  All that means is his foot isn't on the ground.

These are just the ESPN numbers.Β  Univision has been doing very well with the games too.
