ex-CAR RB DeAngelo Williams to visit Steelers on Friday per Schefter
He'd make a decent backup to Bell if he signs cheap. Very clearly a guy on the decline, but on a 1 or 2 year deal as a veteran presence, I'd like it. He can catch, he's an above-average pass blocker now after being below average early in his career, good character "team first" guy who'd be satisfied with a backup role on a winning team (F U LaGarrette,) hard worker, good influence (F U again, LaGarrette.) He's not a 4.5 ypc guy any more, but as a 5-6 carry a game backup and emergency option? Sure.
And he also has to carry the load for a couple of games.
Ed B. thinks a deal gets done tomorrow.
I guess it is good news but as I said earlier there are a ton of decent FA RBs available and the market has not been red hot for Williams. I would prefer to see them address the defense first.
I like it because between Bell, Williams, Archer, and Harris, they probably have enough rosterable backs with complementary skills that they won't need to use a pick in the draft on an RB (save for maybe a late round/supplemental pick.) It's an inexpensive patch that will enable them to hopefully focus most/all of their attention in the draft on the secondary and the pass rush.

God I want free agency over...it's like people don't understand simple concepts like the salary cap. "Why don't they sign Revis and Suh and McPhee?!?!?! That would solve all their problems but they're too cheap to sign anyone!!" "Why are they letting Allen continue to steal money?!" :wall:

Sadly, the end of free agency isn't going to stop that portion of the fan base from continually regurgitating that particular stream of consciousness.

I know, it's just this time of year where all the reporters are filing stories and sending tweets, then the "smart" comments/replies start flowing. Another one I saw, "Moats is okay but when Jones went down Steelers wouldn't even start him so that tells you something right there." Moats actually did start a few games.

What do you guys think about offering the Saints a 5th or 6th rounder for Keenan Lewis? His cap hit would only be $2.5M this year, which is less than what McCain signed for in Miami and he gets about $9M in salary over the following two seasons with a very negligible cap hit if he stinks/they cut him.

I'd be happy to have him for a 6th. Maybe a 5th. I'd be questioning why the drop off when he went to the Saints, though.

I think I'd trade the 5th. Who did they get in the 5th last year, Shaquille Richardson?

I'd do it in a heartbeat but NO already has a ton ($9M) of dead cap money from the Graham trade and trading Lewis would add another ~$6M in dead money. Not sure they would do that.

Yeah I would be all over that but as you said I'm not sure they would swallow that much dead money

It would definitely Band-Aid a problem with a guy perceived to be highly viewed by the management and fans at the end of '13.

He's demanding that they either guarantee the remainder of his deal or trade him. I don't know what his recourse is if they tell him to play a quick game of "hide and go f--- yourself" but they may move him just to get out from under the rest of his deal going forward and get a malcontent out of town.

I'm on board with others in hoping Lewis comes back. A 4th or less would be a win for a guy who doesn't have a huge salary and is familiar/good in the system.

So basically with this offense, the floor is 7 wins right? If we get anything at all from the defense, that number should go up significantly

Steelers schedule is tough and most of the teams they play have improved themselves. AFCN title in reach, but win total may be lower

I didn't exactly set the bar high. I said 7 wins. It's sort of nice having an elite QB and knowing that your floor every year is 6-7 wins.

It's too bad this is happening when he's 32. He's pretty much the anti-thesis of Blount. He's been a platoon guy for a few years now, just hope the wheels haven't completely fallen off. Add a rookie late to fight with Harris and hope Archer develops some I'm happy with this signing.

I want to come in and help them be productive on offense, Williams said. Whether that means me coming off the bench, giving the offensive line water, making sure Ben Roethlisbergers towel is dry so he can wipe his hands and throw the ball better whatever it takes for us to win a Super Bowl, Im willing and able to do it.
That's great.

Williams will be a good mentor/role model for Bell, so he's worth the $ for that alone. Have I said "F U LaGarette yet?"

Ben extension wipes out his current deal and pays him 99M over the next 5 seasons with escalators that could make it worth $108M. Not bad work if you can get it. No word on guaranteed money yet that I've seen.

31M guaranteed.

So Robinson only got 2mil, cant imagine Moore was much more than that either on a 1 year deal. Couldn't lock up one of two backup level corners. Cam Thomas is still on the team and Polamalu is sort of getting hung out to dry. If it weren't for the Ben extension the offseason has been a bust so far. Not that the Steelers are ever that active in FA but would be nice to see some depth pieces brought in at this point.

Moore got 1.525mil for 1 year.

I concur. Beyond unlikely.

If they were to trade up for anyone, I'd assume it'd be somebody who was a bigger playmaker. Perhaps one of the rushers. Even then, I doubt they're seriously considering it, unless they were just awash in comp picks. Too many bodies are needed.

Steelers announce they have resigned WR Darrius Heyward-Bey to a 1 yr contract

In celebration of this momentous occasion, I'd to direct everyone to my signature for EG72's commentary on this signing.
