What kind of chance do you give Golson being a better CB (by game 3) then Taylor was last year?

I'm just hoping Cortez can be a better CB than Ike was last year. If that happens the corner position is not as dire as it seemed a month ago. Cortez rebounds, Will Gay continues to play well, the 2 new guys contribute, Mike Mitchell improves, Shamarko stays healthy (a guy can dream, right?).

Agreed. Ike leaving is addition by subtraction. Unless Golson is a complete stiff he is will be an upgrade
Even if he is a complete stiff, at least he's cheaper and still offers hope for the future. He'd literally have to commit violent crimes against his teammates to offer worse value than Ike did last year.

Hard to say if I would prefer to have him or D-Will, but considering we already have one signed, not sure Id like to sign Pierre as well. If both were still FA's, I think Id lean Pierre because he can fill the RB receiving role void better IMO while Bell is suspended, and if injured at any point later in the year. But....we already signed D-Will

So can anyone tell me why picking La'el Collins in the 7th round wouldve been a bad idea?
For whom?
Any reason to believe he'd have signed there? Seems to me, he probably had a list, and would've gone FA for everyone else (thus meaning they wasted a draft pick).

Because Collins had incentives to sit out a year and re-enter next year's draft to try and get 1st round money, which he could do if drafted. It's only because he wasn't drafted that he had no such choice. Taking him in the 7th would just open that door and throw away the pick. They probably just figured that there was a higher probability of being able to teach a guy to tackle than being able to sign Collins.

Because you would have forced him to sit out. You wouldn't break the CBA or the rookie slot wages by drafting him as a 7th and then paying him like a 2nd.
He flatly said, draft me in round 2 or don't draft me.

Look, if you think this is about deflated balls, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to watch a New England Patriots game and ESPN Sports Center without getting his mind warped.

The Steelers want Heyward to be a Steeler long-term and have told Heyward as much. Heyward wants to be a Steeler, and a Steeler great -- "that means being here the rest of my life, football included, and after," Heyward told local reporters Thursday.

Anyone else crossing their fingers that we can sign Heyward, Decastro, AND Beachum?
Also, if the team thinks they can't afford Beachum I would 100% support cutting Gilbert if that would free up enough space after this season. Beachum definitely played better and LT is more important than RT.

Cutting Gilbert after this season creates a dead money cap hit of $8.3M. Not impossible (see : Woodley, LaMarr) but it seems they'd want to get away from tying up such chunks of their cap in players no longer with the team. After 2017, that dead money hit drops to 5.9M, then 3.3M after 2018. Beyond that, it's negligible, but based on these numbers, unless he really starts sucking the place out or gets badly hurt, I think we're looking at him at RT for at least the next 2 seasons at a minimum, and more likely the next 4 unless the cap jumps way the hell up.

Also, I don't think Heyward and DeCastro are going to be big problems. They're both on 1st round rookie deals and the Steelers picked up the 5th year option on both guys, so they're already going to count a few shekels toward the cap next season. Should be able to extend those guys without increasing their cap numbers significantly. Beachum is going to be the issue because he's SO cheap right now. His cap hit is only $1.5M, which is absurd for an above-average starting LT. He's likely to command more than 5 times that number on the open market, so the amount of cash we have allocated to that position is going to escalate significantly the minute he signs a new deal.

Not from a fantasy perspective but I feel like this could be something of a breakout season for Dri Archer. We know Haley knows how to use a scat back on gadget plays and between Bell, Brown, Miller, Bryant,and Wheaton, there are a lot of guys the defense needs to cover. The key is getting this guy the ball in space. He has the speed and agility to take any play to the house but goes down with a strong enough breeze. If they can get him the rock with room to run rather than jamming him between the tackles, he could account for some serious splash plays.
That's way more optimistic than I am. I'll root for the guy, because he clearly has the potential to be electric, but I saw nothing that said he even deserved a second chance to make an NFL roster, much less that he'd succeed on one. I think he's just so out of his league in terms of basic football skills that he's never going to get a chance to let that crazy speed shine.

I unfortunately must agree. He may make a few splash plays but I just can't see him making a big impact. I hope I am wrong.

Give the kid a chance. He had 17 touches on offense and 10 on special teams over the course of the entire season.
I think a lot of his success or failure will be predicated upon how he's used. I'm optimistic that he can make some game-changing plays within this offense. I don't think he's catching 50 balls or getting 100 carries but especially after Bell's suspension is over, I believe that if used right, he can be another game-changing piece. I'm picturing not just the three-wide quick screens and stuff like that, but delayed short routes over the middle designed to get him the ball with room to turn and accelerate, things of that nature.

Seems like a pretty good deal for both sides, but I haven't seen the guaranteed $ yet.
The issue to me is...they have to find a way to get him on the field when they are NOT going to give him the ball. Otherwise the defense knows he's getting it. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's seems like what happened last year.

Not only that but he showed very little as a returner and that was the one area that I thought he might excel.

It is, but I believe this can be accomplished. If Wheaton delivers from the slot, they can go 4 wide or 3 wide with Archer in the backfield on third downs. Last year, it seemed they wanted to establish him as a between-the-tackles runner when he was in the game to keep defenses honest. F that. Use him as a decoy. If he draws 2 defenders, someone's going to be open. They can't double cover AB, Bryant, and Archer.
I think it's mainly the emergence of Bryant as a deep threat that's going to free up space for him to operate. He had all of 6 touches last year after Bryant was inserted into regular rotation, not enough to know what could be yet.

Any chance he can develop in to the next Dante Hall? Oh wait, we have the league's best wr returning punts.
Archer has talent. Would be ideal if he could displace Brown from the return team.
