trading down might have been tough, but at least you let the clock run and feel things out. there is no good reason to slam dunk the pick.

Don't get me wrong, I like Shazier and think he can really be an excellent NFL player, I'm just a little surprised by the pick.
Agreed. This just feels a bit like a luxury. There are too many holes to draft a luxury.
Hell no, we need another ILB so this pick is hardly a luxury
Exactly. If Spense isn't back (and we have no idea how good of a player he would have been even before he was injured) we have a 6th rounder and a low price FA pickup as our options. On a team where LB is the key to the D.

Vince Williams is not the answer there. Definitely a need, I think I was only surprised because I thought they might give Spence a whirl. Maybe I underestimate the impact of his injury/layoff. Shazier probably starts week 1 and I'm not sure you'd say that about a WR or CB pick there. Still just would rather have seen a corner, our corners scare the crap put of me.

If he can play inside, then ok. I guess we'll see.
I believe he HAS to. I don't see him being an effective edge rusher in the NFL at all. I could see him being a poor man's Ray Lewis type disruptor in the middle.

In my mind, what sucks the most about the pick is that their linebackers rarely step right in and make any kind of meaningful contribution.

I knew they didn't like Dennard. It was a kick in the nuts Fuller went to Chicago. They took the best available. Gotta think he'll play ILB not sure how I feel about it but he was pretty damn good at OSU.
I don't think Shazier was anywhere close to BPA
GB was definitely going to take him at 21, Cowboys were rumored to at 16. Seems like he was taken around the right place. Dennard is the 3rd or worse CB taken for a reason. Us mortals definitely overrated him.
Not even talking about Dennard.Martin would have completed our line. Clinton-Dix and Moseley are both possibly better.

And use your effin clock. Trade out.
Shazier was rated higher. By the Steelers. When you have a guy you covet at your pick and the phone is not ringing off the hook to trade back you make the pick. Easy to say "trade out" but much harder to actually do.
IB says it every year but if you don't have a deal in place why do it in the last three minutes? That's how you make mistakes. I'm totally playing devils advocate on the pick but I'm also not that surprised by it. I think they would have taken Gilbert or Fuller there if available, neither were.

No one ever has a deal in place. Except at 1 or 2 you don't know how the draft will fall.

It will always be done at the time.

“His production speaks for itself,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “His tape says he doesn’t need my endorsement. He plays with a lot of urgency. He was a significant contributor and really improved through his stay there.” Tomlin added: “Quite frankly, the guy has no holes.”

“What we needed was a defensive playmaker,” Tomlin said. “He fits the bill in that regard.”

I think if they take a WR tomorrow, Jarvis Landry out of LSU may be the guy.
Great possession guy, but not the size we need.
I'm thinking about the fit. To me, Wheaton works best put of the slot. Brown is the X. They need a guy who blocks, goes over the middle, makes the tough first down catches. Landry may be the best guy in the draft to fill that exact role. A guy like Benjamin has the size/speed metrics, but has unreliable hands.

I don't like Benjamin. I love Landry. Compares favorably to Hines Ward, but I think they're targeting a tall WR. I'd prefer Landry to Benjamin.

I'm hoping Mathews there....but what if Benjamin falls. Would be interesting. The way the CBs (Dennard) are falling could be that a Verrett or Baptiste is there tomorrow. That would be ok.
Matthews would be a good fit at the Y too, but he may not even fall to our 2nd round pick. Even if he does,a guy like Verrett or Roby might be there. Landry on the other hand, may well be available when we pick in the third.

Yeah, if Roby is there they should run to the podium...and IB will explode. ;)

I'd rather they take the full 7 minutes then run to the podium and take Roby.

Of course the Bengals pick up Dennard <_<

So which linebacker or defensive lineman is the Steelers going to pick up in the 2nd round :kicksrock:

Defensive line is a very real possibility. Lot of holes on that line. Keisel still unsigned, Hood is gone, McClendon not the solution at NT (IMO).

Verrett gone. I suspect Roby goes in the next 10 picks too. I'm not sure value is going to be there at corner in round 2.

Don't worry I figure Colbert will tell how Ike Taylor is still the best corner about 100 times during the off season

Maybe Manziel busts, but hate seeing him end up in our division. Dennard to Cincy is just as awful.

I like Shazier, but he better pan out otherwise we really #### the bed with this pick.

Shazier did run a 4.38 40. Son of a pastor. Outstanding work ethic. Position of need. 21 years old. Medically clean. Lot to like.
Sounds like Steelers material. Still disagree that it was a position of 'great' need. But I hope I'm wrong.
It is a crappy pick. Take the OL from ND. This guy is not going to be the next LT, and one player is not going to make a slow D fast. We usually pick good players in later rounds so this my hope.
 Who said he was the next LT?

No one but we develop and spit out LB, it will only be a good pick if he is the next LT. I don't think he is. Hate the pick.
Good.

Tuitt in the 2nd would be nice.
He'll be gone fo sho
Yeah, I think Pats take him here.

Does anyone like the Steelers first round pick?
The Steelers do. Tomlin/Colbert/Butler/LeBeau do. And really that's all that matters. Of course they're not the only ones. Typical of Steelers fans to ##### and moan. Not at all surprised by the whining.

Yeah, I like watching the playoffs. Without a team in there.
Yeah, because taking Dennard was going to get them there. Okay.

What I posted elsewhere earlier. Guess I was right.

Rumblings about Shazier to Steelers. The fans would go nuts!

You say this every year. They're the same people who picked Limas Sweed. We can criticize. It's ok.

But when it's all you (not you specifically) do it gets old. The Steelers are right way more than they are wrong. I bet some of the whiners cheered the Sweed pick. Shazier was rated a 6.3 on NFL.com and Dennard a 6.1 and both were a 90 at ESPN so it seems more than a few rated him as high or higher than Dennard.

Now, back to your #####fest. I'm off to watch some Daily Show.

I really like Shazier, but I dont know what I want more in the 2nd round now, CB or WR....by passing on Dennard, our DBs are makeshift as ####. We couldve at least survived with Vince Williams.

EDIT: FYI I yelled for an hour before I came here to ##### :fulldisclosure:
Yeah a good fast LB is good, but having a make shift OL again, that screams playoffs.
Shazier is leaps and bounds better than any OT besides Martin available at that spot. And he's a better prospect than Martin. They don't have a glaring need on the line. They feel that Beachum is capable and until proven otherwise they're not going to spend a high draft pick on a LT unless someone like Mathews falls to them, and why would that happen?. They're set everywhre besides RT and they feel they have a few guys that can compete for the spot. They need to get younger and faster on D and that's exactly what they're doing.

How is it make shift OL again? Pouncey's back, Decastro has a year of growth and we got one of the best OL coaches you can this offseason. I have yet to even see you type in Martin's name. Were you even familiar with him before tonight? I get it, it didn't fit an immediate need. It's also one pick in a very deep draft. The WR rush never came and there is a truck load of em out there. We do need CB help but I actually agree with the philosophy of CB's later on. That's where Seattle found there CB's, we just have to wait and see what's in store.

I don't think there's value in the 2nd for CB. Of course it's going to be BPA but as far as need it should be WR or DE.

Oh, and Vince is a 2 down player at most. He has to come out in obvious passing situations. Not so with Shazier. He can cover as well as go after the qb and chase down the rb.

Name the last CB taken in the 1st by the Steelers. Here I'll help. Chad Scott. How many pro bowls did he go to?
