✦✦✦Official 2014 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (2 Viewers)

Still don't understand it. A lot of times these guys like Jacoby Jones, Trindon Holiday, McCluster take time to learn how to use their speed and then they are off to another team. It's a project pick in the 3rd. Ill admit there are CJesk moments on his tape but I do not like this pick.

As much as like the first couple picks, I hate the Archer pick that much at present.

He's going to get destroyed in the pros. Sure, he's fast. He's also tiny.

This is clearly a "Haley Special" to me. The Steelers didn't usually go after these types until he showed up. They tried this with Chris Rainey and it didn't work. It's probably not going to work with Archer either.

How many 5-7 guys that weigh under 180 have ever had an impact in this league? (At least, say, in the last 20 years?) It's a big man's sport.

I'm lukewarm on Archer. I like the fact that he's a splash play guy and introduces even more speed into the offense, but they're limited in what they can do with him because he can't block and he fumbles too much. He'll get limited touches, but he CAN contribute right away in limited time.

I think it mostly seems like a reach because Dri is blazing, but also a midget, Sort of a gimmick pick if you look at it glass half empty.

On the other hand, we got the fastest guy in the draft, who also has more skills than that, with essentially a 4th round pick. The WR well seemed to get picked dry for the most part. I'll take it and see what happens tomorrow, we better hit WR and CB heavy and hard though.

It didn't work with Rainey due to his characterOne thing is for certain, the front office will be testing the receiver depth.

That's true, but also consider that Tavon Austin has almost identical measurables and went #11 last year.
Which I also thought was semi-crazy, fwiw. :) Even if Archer is being slated as strictly a slot WR/KR I still won't dig this pick much.

I'm not denying he made plays.....in the MAC. He also was banged up frequently(not shocking). That isn't going to get better in the pros. And, as you mentioned, there's the fumbles.

This is a guy who you take a stab at in the 4th or 5th, in my mind.

I hope I am wrong but seems foolish to go with this guy over the crop of WR/CB left but maybe they think they can still fill that tomorrow with what's left.

Let's see what tomorrow brings. If they adequately fill what we perceive to be their needs, the Archer pick might not be so bad.

Austin, though, had terrific hands. And even so I never would have made that pick. But I hope you're right.
I'm not comparing Archer to Austin in terms of overall football ability. There's reason one guy was around the 10th pick and the other around the 100th. Just saying that denigrating Archer based on size alone may be overlooking the positive. Some folks had him hand timed at 4.16 at the combine. By any measure, he's one of the 5 or 10 fastest players to come out of college this century.

The Raiders started drafting well. The Steelers are just picking up the mantle of drafting the fastest player at position X. I wonder which punter posted the fastest 40 time? Might come in handy on those fakes.

With our new additions we should be able to win the relay-race on the Battle of the Network Stars - NFL Edition.

Archer

Heyward-Bey

Mitchell

Shazier

They intended to draft Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert, thinking he could still be available with the 15th overall pick. Gilbert would provide a need at a position where longtime starter Ike Taylor is in his final season with the Steelers and there is little depth.

But when the Browns took Gilbert at No. 8, the Steelers shifted their target to wide receiver Odell Beckham of LSU. But, when the Giants drafted Beckham with the 12th overall pick, the Steelers made the move to take Shazier, even though they have three young players who they think can play next to Lawrence Timmons on the inside — Vince Williams, Sean Spence and Terence Garvin. Williams, the incumbent starter, and Garvin were rookies in 2013.

The Steelers had Shazier rated so much higher than anyone else on the board they felt they couldn’t pass on him.

Wonder where they had Barr rated.

Gilbert had mostly not been available that late on at any mock source since the combine.

Now Fuller? That I believe.

C'mon guys lets not criticize picks. The Steelers obviously had Archer rated higher than we did and they know more than us. Nothing else to say about it.

Do we think they may not take another wr now?
Not sure. If they were serious about getting a big WR, there are several still out there. Martavis Bryant, Brandon Coleman to name a couple. Both guys have questionable hands, I think it depends on whether or not they prefer either of those guys to Moye.

At this point, teams are just throwing darts anyway. I'm happy if the dart my team is throwing runs a 4.2.

A little feelgood medicine:

From www.stampedeblue.com 2012:

The third round has been a bad one for G.M. Ryan Grigson. He took TE Dwayne Allen at No. 64 after already selecting Coby Fleener at No. 34. Then, Grigson swung a trade with the 49ers, handing over Indy's 97th pick and a 5th rounder to move up to 92 and take Hilton, a player he probably didn't need to move up to get. Hilton is fast (4.34 40-yard time), explosive, and has kick return ability. He also has fumble problems and is only 5'10. He projects as a slot receiver, which is what Austin Collie is. Like the Allen pick, this one is a head-scratcher. So many needs on a truly terrible defense, and Grigson takes four offensive players in a row. Yes, wide receiver was a need, but no where near as vital as corner, nose tackle, or safety.

Good idea. Let's go back to criticizing the audible podcast. jk

I would like to say "Willie Parker's fast" is about to get his doors blown off.

I'm very curious what we do about CB in particular.

At WR, could we see Wheaton as the man between the 20s and Moye as a red zone package player?

Seeing how the 49ers traded with the Bills for Stevie Johnson, is there any feasibility of the Steelers trading picks for an established WR from any team who has one that they are looking to rid themselves? Any out there that fit mold of what they would like at comparable salaries? I would think it is not very likely but nonetheless would pose the question.

Everything about Archer reminds me of (college and 1st couple years in the NFL) Chris Johnson except the oomph at putting the shoulder down for the last yard. Both attack arm tackles aggressively. Both hit top speed NOW! They both catch well, have good if not great open-field vision and can use angles all over the field.

BTW, Warrick Dunn played at 178. Not that I dare compare the toughness of Dunn to Archer, or even Johnson for that matter.

Jets have taken 3 pass catchers and 2 secondary guys in 5 picks. Kinda wish they were behind us rather than in front.

Might be because I saw him play in HS. Guy has potential. Lots of holes, but at this point you're looking for potential.

And it's Bryant. No shock there. If this kid can learn to catch with his hands, he has enormous upside. Phenomenal size and speed.
