✦✦✦Official 2014 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

Yeah I don't see Tomlin getting fired after this season unless there is a massive collapse like a 3-13 season or a major scandal.

Most of the locals are down on the Steelers due to the poor performance of the defense in preseason. On paper the Steelers didn't really lose anything on defense from last season and should be a little better. Assuming the Steelers offense picks up where they left off last season they could be pretty good.

Overall I think it is a crap shoot. 8-8 and with a few breaks could be 10-6 or even 11-5. On the other hand they could be 6-10 or 7-9 with some bad breaks.

It all starts this week against the Browns. I expect the Steelers to win in a close one but I don't take anything for granted. The Steelers have been slow coming out of the gate in recent years and so it wouldn't surprise me if the Browns pull of the upset.

I am thinking 24-17 for a final score.

The Steelers always run a vanilla D in the preseason. Shazier, Tuitt and Thomas are quality additions to the D and if we can pressure QBs, our secondary will be fine.

The offense is set to be better than last year. I like 2nd year Wheaton better than 2nd year Sanders, the offensive line is healthy and not in flux for the first time in how many years. Munchak has got them coached up. I like all 3 of our running backs and when healthy, I think the WR corps are as deep as any.

Barring injury, I don't think there's any way this team is any less than 9-7 with a 12-4 ceiling.

We will challenge with Cincy all year for the division title. Baltimore is falling off and may finish 4th in the conf.

No Lance Moore today. JBrown might be the slot receiver. We'll get to see how far he's come sooner than we thought.

Hopefully Mitchell plays up to his contract and wasn't a "one year wonder" last year. If he can have similar success this year that will help the D out big time.

Well, that was just about the most uninspiring win possible.
Sure looked good in the first half though didn't it?

I can overlook the first score or two in the second half because there is a natural letdown once you get up by that much but that was ridiculous. Very little pressure and the defense was over pursuing the entire second half. They need to stay in their gaps. A couple of costly penalties too kept the Brown's drives alive.

And I am not sure WTF the offense was doing. Why take the foot off the pedal?

Very glad we got the "W" but don't have a real good feeling going into Baltimore on Thursday.

No chit. They have massive holes to fill in D.
I don't know if it's holes or if it's more a matter of a bunch of young guys (Worilds is still green, Jarvis, Shazier, Tuitt) and some new guys to the D (Thomas Mitchell). I think (hope) as the season moves on that they will grow and learn. Fewer missed assignments, fewer bad plays from Shazier, better Dline play.

Always the optimist I guess.

Big missed tackle by Cortez on a long play. Ike still can't catch (that was terrible, I've seen kids make that catch). Troy with a big whiff. To me the big change was Browns went hurry up and that kept the Steelers off balance and out of their base a lot. When not in base they can't stop the run. Other teams will pick up on that and do the same.

The funny thing about the hurry up yesterday is that the Steelers were unable to make substitutions while on defense but the Browns were easily able to substitute when the Steelers were in hurry up. The difference was that Hoyer got under center very quick.

Same as the preseason game vs Eagles.

And I knew it would come. Listening to SNR, the show with Batch on it (replay from last night), caller says Lebeau must go! Anxiously awaiting the next one with Haley must go. Tomlin has to be in there somewhere too.

I don't necessarily think that LeBeau needs to go but they do have to start making some adjustments. You can't allow a 24-point comeback at home by an offense like the Browns.

Any word on Dri Archer?
Tomlin has his weekly presser today at noon, a day earlier this week due to the Thursday night game. We should get an update then.
Listened to his post game presser. I counted 8 obviously's in the 1st 2 minutes.
obviously you should expect that by now
Obviously I set out to count the number of times he said it and I wasn't disappointed, obviously.

Should Gay start in place of Ike? Ike had a bad game. And not just the dropped int or the penalties.

I think so. Ike used to be a helluva cover CB (albeit with no hands). He is a liability now.
Someone asked if Ike had frying pans/skillets for hands. I think that's an insult to frying pans.

Tomlin presser starting now. Time to go count obviously's.

Dri ankle sprain and will be questionable

Shamarko ankle/achilles sprain, also questionable

Guys who were out yesterday unknown right now.

Dri Archer (ankle) - Questionable

Shmarko Thomas (achilles) - Questionable

The guys that did not play against the Browns due to injury (Lance Moore, Martavis Bryant) most likely will be questionable.

ETA: Beat me to it!

someone asked whether he should be a starter. Tomlin: we view him as a starter...

Ray Fittipaldo ‏@rayfitt1 1m

Tomlin said "We view William Gay as a starter." ... Gay only played 16 snaps vs. Browns.

Boy, this Ray Rice business is overshadowing everything these days (as it should I suppose). Any thoughts on tomorrow night's game? I believe the last time they played was when Tomlin stepped on the field during a punt return, no? Seems like a lifetime ago.

These games are always close (line is Baltimore by 3) but I think this (hopefully) demoralized Ravens team might be worse than anyone suspected. A flaccid Flacco threw 62(!) times last week in their loss to the Bengals.

27-17 non-wife beating good guys.
Suggs hasn't forgotten https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BxICZVyCIAABhSZ.jpg:large

I can't stand Suggs but he is awesome for the rivarly.

The Ravens are struggling on both offense and defense. The Steelers have a chance to really cripple the Ravens because an 0-2 start, both at and home and against divisional opponents, would be a lot to overcome.

The Steelers should be able to pit up points against the Ravens defense which also struggles against the no-huddle. On the other hand if Hoyer can put up 24 against the Steelers in a half then I shudder to think what Flacco can do.

All this points to a high scoring affair so that means we're probably in for a 13-10 game.

Flacco can do the no huddle well. Color me concerned.

and the Steelers cannot stop the run. It will be close and if the Steelers lose, they will have let a golden opportunity slip by.

yeah, when they're in sub package and the opponent goes quick seems like almost every play someone misses an assignment (opponent finds a gap). hopefully as the year goes on and the new/young guys get more time they'll improve.

If they play well and win tonight it could go a long way towards confidence building and momentum.

Man this team looks like the true definition of a 8-8 team. The offense can be very explosive but long periods of nothing. The defense is still below average especially on the pass. I am really getting tired of our secondary being full of hard hitters and awful tacklers although it has been that way for years so I should be used to it

Sky is falling everyone. Week 2 and Baltimore played us too tough. This is what happens when a lot of FA's and rookies take on prominent roles, takes a few weeks to adjust. Be thankful we're not going to be 0-4 by the end of the season this is at least a 9 win team and in my gut a 10 win team.

really thought this was a wildcard team

Remaining on the schedule: TB @ Home

@ Jacksonville

@Cle

HOU @ home

@NYJ

KC @ Home

So then we would need two or three from the other games which we could take one from Cincy and Baltimore at home plus Indy or Tennessee. I don't think we beat NO even at home or Atl but this isn't a terrible schedule and I think it is a realistic thought.

You're probably right. I'm just emotional after a horse#### effort against our arch rivals.

This a poor poor team, and anyone who thinks they are winning 10 games is delusional. I hope I eat my words but they are worse than last year. Absolutely pathetic embarrassing performance.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are a mediocre football team. There, I said it.
Mediocre is probably being too generous.

I expected the defense to be bad and they didn't let me down but the offense was putrid last night and that surprised me. Ben was off, the o-line was a joke, bad turnovers and costly penalties. The offense was terrible.

I'll chalk a little bit up to a short week on the road but my lord they stink. This looks like the worst Steelers team since 1999.

Short week. Ravens might have been playing with extra (like always vs Steelers) due to the Rice event. Hard to say. It's only week 2. Good to see irish still has the team spirit.
