10 bold predictions for 2011 (1 Viewer)

Portis 26

Madden Freak
Round about this time of year, we usually have some fun with predictions for the forthcoming season. As ever, it's only interesting if predictions are bold. "Adrian Peterson finishes top 5 in rushing" is not a bold prediction. "Wayne Chrebet comes out of retirement and leads the league in receptions" would be.

Anyway, here are my 10 bold predictions for 2011:

1) Donovan McNabb has a great comeback year and leads the Vikings to a wildcard slot

McNabb has had his fair share of bad press but the fact remains that he put up superb numbers with the Eagles (check out his regular season INT % - one of the lowest in NFL history) and consistently took them to the post-season. That was often, although not always, with pretty average receivers. Sure, he had a terrible year last year but a) look at his horrific supporting cast and b) there seems to have been some really weird, neurotic thing going on with the Shanahans.

I say McNabb passes for 4000+ yards pass and leads the Vikings to a more than respectable 10-6 finish, enough for a wildcard.

2) The Chiefs bomb and finish with a losing record

Sure, they won the division last year and sure Cassel put up very impressive numbers. However, that was against an easy-peasy schedule (only 2 opponents with winning records) and with a now-departed coaching genius as his offensive coordinator. I say with Charlie Weis gone, it all goes horribly wrong, Haley reverts to type and becomes the hapless former golf coach he is, and the Chiefs finish 6-10 or 7-9.

3) The Bills surprise us with a winning record with Fitzpatrick lighting it up

I thought Fitzpatrick did really well last year and with some really promising young WRs (Johnson, Nelson, Easley) I think the Bills take the next step. Chan Gailey has done an awesome job so far and I think this year the Bills finish with a winning record, despite their still leaky D.

4) The Patriots under-perform

All I've heard this week has been about how they're going 15-1 or 14-2 or whatever. I don't buy it. They just brought in two complete headcases and the fact is, although they did amazingly last year, it was basically with smoke and mirrors. They did it with a very limited pass rush, very limited WRs, very raw LBs and very average RBs who really over-achieved. I think they get found out a bit this year. They'll still finish 11-5 or thereabouts but it won't be plain sailing.

5) Shanahan gets fired in mid-season

Has anyone noticed the remarkable similarity between Mike Shanahan, the genius former Broncos coach who won 2 SBs, and Mike Shanahan, the idiot Redskins coach? Are these guys related? Separated at birth? Shanahan's tenure has been a trainwreck and I can't believe Rex Grossman to Jabar Gaffney is going to be a winning formula. Some coaches get better with age. Others get more stubborn or more senile. Shanahan is not improving with age. He's gone after the Skins open 2-8.

6) Tarvaris Jackson is better than we thought

Everyone's been pulling their hair out about the T-Jax acquisition but in limited relief for Favre last year he looked quite confident and showcased a great arm. I'm going to stick my neck out and say he does better than expected.

7) The Titans bomb

Their lead WR is a headcase and has been in trouble with the law, Chris Johnson is holding out, they've got a rookie coach, their new veteran QB is exceedingly fragile, their new rookie QB is very erratic and inaccurate, how is this one not going to end in tears?

8) The "Dream Team" isn't

I will make a small wager that Michael Vick plays fewer than half the snaps in 2011. He's just too injury-prone now. And the Eagles' revamping of their D appears to have completely ignored their appalling LB corps. It'll be all pass-rush and coverage and no tackling and they'll get run over.

9) Cowboys make the playoffs

I say Garrett is a good coach and he has a fundamentally very good team that just got a bit lost last year. With good discipline and with Romo, Austin, Witten, Bryant et al back in the groove and with a refocused D they go a good 10-6 or 11-5.

10) The 49ers are a train-wreck

Harbaugh was the most coveted coach in the land but he has had no time to prepare his team, their star HB is holding out, their star WR has injury problems, and Alex Smith is not the answer at QB. Could get messy.

Gore is reporting to camp.

All-time great Hines Ward finishes as Steelers 4th best pass catcher, behind Wallace, Sanders, and Miller.

Reggie Wayne leads league in receiving and is top scoring wr in PPR.

Carolina Panthers hang tough in very strong and competitive NFC South and finish a respectable 8-8, which is still last place.

SF QB Alex Smith passes for 3800 yards and 25 tds (but throws > 18 picks).

Philadelphia pass defense does NOT finish in top 10.

Olsen finishes as TE #2 right behind Gates

Romo ends up as QB1 in fantasy

Reggie Bush rushes for 1,300 yards & gets another 500 receiving

Like your predictions.

#3 is a bit hard to get on board with. Not because they can't be better, but they are in a TOUGH division.

I think you got tired at the end.

#9-The cowboys making the playofss. Really not a stretch at all..The talent is there.

#10-Niners=trainwreck. Hard to define. With a first year coach and considering they have been nothing short of inept the past few years, they could go 7-9 and people will pat Harbaugh on the back.

Wayne as the #1 Wr? would love to see it and can see the case built for it. he is always a lot better than what most people gloss over him when they are looking for the 25 year old darlings. But It will be hard pressed this year. Again, would love to see it though.

My prediction: Joe Flacco becomes a top 10 FF QB this year.

If healthy, Beanie, Roy Williams, and Mike Sims Walker will all have 1,000 yard seasons...

The Green Bay packers (my team) suffer the superbowl hangover and miss the playoffs. This might not even be a reflection on them slipping so much as it is a feeling how strong that division is. Bears were tough last year and have added some nice players, Lions are up and coming and have had a nice offseason, if McNabb can give the Vikings some solid QB play the are not easy either.

RB Torain is hurt, Helu is nothing special and Hightower gets 350 touches for 1350 yards rushing, 400 receiving and 16 total touchdowns

QB Cassell throws 36 TD's and is the #1 rated FF QB (passes to Bowe/Breaston/RB's)

WR Austin Collie starts every game and his ridiculous PPG holds up, going 116 catches, 1450 yards and 16 TD's (1 each game of the regular season)

TE Jared Cook is the recipient of 85 catches from old Hasselbeck, the new #1 TE in FF

You get credit for boldest of the bold.

"4) The Patriots under-perform

All I've heard this week has been about how they're going 15-1 or 14-2 or whatever. I don't buy it. Who do you listen to that has them going 15-1 or 14-2? 11-5 is resonable and that is about the talent they have. They've been found out for a while just that not a lot of teams can play the way NYJ or Baltimore can in the playoffs the past couple of years.

Sadly for Bills fans they will win one game in division (1-5) so they won't be .500 overall as that would require them to go 7-3 against the NFC east and AFC west.

Bold font can't put these out on a limb.

My prediction: Joe Flacco becomes a top 10 FF QB this year.
I don't see that as "bold" :football:
I agree that it isn't as out there as saying "Kevin Faulk will lead the league in rushing" but Flacco is almost never mentioned as an elite FF QB so I mentioned it because, top ten is the elite of the league. So, if you think it isn't too bold, then pick which one of these guys you think he is going to outperform (cause he has to outperform at least one to get into the top 10):PeytonBradyRodgersBreesRiversVickRomoBig BenStaffordBradford/Shaub/Freeman/Ryan/CutlerNot as easy when you have to figure out who he might beat out.

Most rankings have Flacco ranked in the 12-14 range for QBs. So its not going out on a limb too much to say he'll outperform his ADP by 2 spots. Also, while I agree its harder if you single out one specific guy, but you are basically saying he'll finish ahead of one of the ten and not naming him. Odds are good at least one of those 10 gets injured or has a down year. For what its worth, even though its not an overly bold prediction, I'd go the other way on Flacco. I think he struggles a bit and the Ravens are thinking about replacing him as soon as next offseason.

1. Jamaal Charles does not eclipse 1100 rushing yards

-I expect the Chiefs to have a down year because of a harder schedule, and I also expect Haley to continue to limit Charles’ touches. I think Charles is a great talent, but this isn’t a great year for him.

2. Rashard Mendenhall finishes as a top-4 fantasy back.

-With a healthy Willie Colon, the Steelers run blocking should be much better. Add a healthy Roeth, and teams won’t be able to load up in the box like they did for the first 4 weeks of last season. Combine that with the trust the coaching staff has shown Mendenhall as a goal line back, and I expect his YPC and touchdowns to increase, and I expect the Steelers to have a lot of late leads.

3. The Panthers finish ahead of the Bucs in the NFC South.

- Tampa Bay gets caught up in its own hype and stumbles out of the gate. Meanwhile, the Panthers utilize better luck and the core of a team that has traditionally been very good, and turn to the ground game to win at least 8 games.

4. The Texans win the AFC South

-This probably won’t happen since the Texans are perennially disappointing, but on paper, they have the talent to fix their defense and a quality offensive core intact. Combine this with questions over Manning’s health, and the Texans’ time is now.

5. Hakeem Nicks is the top fantasy receiver in the NFL.

-Nicks is a physical presence with a nose for the end zone and a great connection with Eli Manning. If he stays healthy, I’ll predict 90-1300-14

6. Ryan Williams out-performs Mark Ingram this season.

-I’ve never been a fan of Ingram, and even though he’s in what appears to be a perfect situation, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ivory and Thomas begin to take some of his carries.

7. The Lions finish ahead of the Bears.

-This prediction isn’t that bold, but I think the new Special Teams rules hurt the Bears more than any other team, and they won a lot of close games last year. I think the opposite is true of Detroit.

1) Panthers are in contention for a playoff spot (i.e., at or a game below .500 with a few weeks left in the season)

2) Darren McFadden is the #1 FF back

3) Tony Romo finishes as the #3 QB

4) Peyton Manning finally misses a start

5) The Colts miss the playoffs

6) Jermichael Finley has 1,200+ yards and 10 TDs

7) Kellen Winslow is a top 3 FF Tight End

8) Chaz Schilens plays 12 games

9) Seahawks make the playoffs again

10) Redskins with more than 5 games

2011 #1 in PPR on a PPG (points per game) basis -

QB - Michael Vick

RB - Darren McFadden

WR - Larry Fitzgerald

Sam Bradford will finish as a top ten fantasy QB, ahead of higher rated guys like Schaub, Freeman and Stafford.

Tim Tebow will be a top ten fantasy QB (PPG).

Alan Bradford will be the starting RB for the Bucs during the fantasy playoffs.

Plaxico Burress will score at least 8 TDs.

Percy Harvin will be a top five WR (PPG).

5 team and 5 player oriented:

1. Rams win NFC West

2. Houston posts a top 10 defense resulting in an AFC Championship game appearance.

3. Same with Tampa in the NFC

4. Wheels fall completely off the Redskins' wagon and they end up with the #1 overall pick

5. Jets miss the playoffs

1. Chris Long is the NFL's sack leader

2. Matt Ryan leads the league in TDs.

3. Knowshon Moreno has 1500+ combined yards and 10+ tds

4. Darren McFadden leads the league in rushing

5. Jeremy Maclin has at least 300 more yards receiving than DeSean Jackson.
