10 team league - playoff structure? (1 Viewer)

I run 2 10 team leagues, 2 divisions of 5. Regular season is 13 weeks and we play double-headers each week. You play your division opponents 4 times and the other division twice, for a total of 26 games. Six teams make the playoffs, 2 division winners and 2 wildcards from each division. Division winners get byes in week 14. For the past 2 years now, the 5 and 6 seeded teams have played in the championship. In fact this year the #6 seed won it with a regular season record of 10-16. I am looking for some ideas on how I can change things up to make this more difficult to occur. I feel like the entire regular season was meaningless with this team winning it all with such a lousy regular season. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Don't know if this will help, but here's how we do it:

Ten team league- no divisions. We play through week 14 and do 4 double header weeks so every team plays each other team twice. Playoffs are weeks 15 and 16. Top five teams go into the playoff round, bottom five go into the consolation round.

Each team starts with their season's average points per game and add weeks 15 and 16 to it. Now, our teams average about 900 points per week, so for example, team A averaged 877 points per game then scored 923 points in week 15 and 950 in week 16. His total playoff score is 2750 points. Whichever team has the highest overall score is the champion. Same format for the consolation round. The winner of that round wins first pick in the rookie draft as well as a trophy.

The season is important as it counts 1/3 of the overall playoff score. Also, one bad week won't sink a team.

The best regular season team doesn't always win the Super Bowl. Not sure why you think your fantasy league should be different.

I think 4 teams max should make the playoffs in a 10 team league.
Agreed. That's how my 10 team league works. Still allows for those Cinderella teams to sneak in on occasion (twice in 6 years we've had the fourth seed, with 7-7 and 8-6 records respectively, win the championship, but the other 4 years it was won by a top 2 seed). It just doesn't make sense to have a league in which more than half of the teams make the playoffs--in essence you're allowing below average teams to make it in, and that is not good.
