101 MPH Speeding Ticket (1 Viewer)

I don't know how it is in CA but I have a buddy that's a cop here in PA and he said it is very rare for cops not to show because they schedule the court dates around them and the cop usually arranges so he get paid overtime.  He said in he had never missed a court date in 15 years cause it was easy money.
This is why I recommend extending the court date as many times as possible. The further in the future the better chance that the court date doesn't fit the cop's schedule.

Is stuff like this why court costs are so ridiculously expensive? I know it's a 'know your rights' type of thing, but I'm curious what the ramifications of people doing things like this are on the court system as a whole. Clearly guilty party trying to get out of it on the off chance hoping the cop might not show up via 5 scheduled court dates.
In California the rescheduling is done online so it doesn't take up anyone's time.  When you show up in court you have at the very most 5 minutes in front of the judge.

The cop was lying - you can't be found guilty of more than the original ticket.
maybe...but ticket listed the actual infraction and the reduced one.  I figured i'd rather pay $150 and 0 points than risk paying $300 and getting 6 points

Not sure what kind of car you drive, OPM, but for any decent touring sedan, 100mph on open road feels no different than 60mph. I've personally hit 140 on a nice open stretch of highway in Southern Mississippi on the way to New Orleans last year and it was a bit spooky, but still a shockingly smooth ride. We averaged right at 100mph on the trip and the only time things even felt remotely unsafe was when we pushed past 120ish.

Absent much traffic, modern cars are easy as hell to drive 100mph on well maintained freeways.

You are not very smart if you are driving in excess of 100 on Mississippi or Louisiana roads - they are the worst.  Trust me I grew up in LA.

I love how everyone #####es about lawyers, but will do what they can to "beat" any punishment, even if they were already given a break.

I've made the trip many many times and the fast stuff was on a fairly freshly paved wide open stretch (couple miles line of sight) in MS. But yeah, there are some brutal stretches for sure. Good tires make a difference.

Don't judges kind of look down on citizens representing themselves? Seems Fred should get a lawyer. Lawyer may know of some other options.

You'd be shocked at what lawyers can pull off. I have a guy I pay $50 and he makes tickets go away. Granted they're usually 10-15 over... not 100mph tickets... but lots of lawyers have connections/tricks that can help a lot.

Much may depend on the posted speed limit of where "Fred" was.  Much of the punishment is determined by how much over the limit you...I mean he...was going.  I got pulled going 70 one time, which doesn't sound bad on the surface, but it was in a 45 MPH workzone (on a Sunday when there were no construction workers, but the limit still applied).  Couldn't get it lowered, so going 25 MPH over rather than 24 MPH over was the real painful part of the deal.  Went to court (small town, kinda already knew the judge personally - played soccer with his sons) and was given 40 hours of community service, but no real fine other than a small court fee.  Spent much of the summer and fall that year "volunteering" with the local fire department cleaning trucks and watching Monday night football with the guys.

Oh Fred was just hoping the cop won't get up at the crack of dawn after a big Holiday weekend.  Fred has delusions of a cop at the river all weekend, possibly imbibing.  Otherwise he knows he won't beat it.  Fred was instead dreaming of traffic school in his future.  Everyone has hopes.  Maybe the officer will retire!

Read  this in Jaqen H'ghar's voice for full effect.

I can't get the original quote from Godsbrothers but he said in PA they schedule the court date around the officer's schedule.  So they always show up.  I doubt that's the case in CA because Fred's court date was on the ticket right when it was issued.  Or does this first court date not include the officer?

Fred just text me.  He want to know 2 things.

1. Did the officer give him a break with that teeny tiny 1 MPH drop???  How much of a break is it exactly?

2. Why does the quote functions suck?

He also said he is in touch with an attorney and she says she would be happy to take care of the citation for Fred.

Does not.

Maybe things have changed ... but the stretch of I-55 between Jackson, MS and McComb, MS used to be Ticket Central. Loads of state troopers, loads of radar guns. Thinking back to the early 2000s.

Considering I regularly do 80mph in my mini-van on 70mph hwy, 100mph in the desert seems about right...

Oh, and the obligatory young and dumb story..  In my 20's, I had a Dodge Stealth AWD Twin Turbo.. Had it topped out at 155mph on a looooong straight stretch of empty highway around 3am..  Wouldn't go any faster...I tried.

I was running a Escort Passport Max detector and a Valentine One detector, as well as Waze and Escort Live apps that crowdsource police locations. As i said we averaged over 100mph for the trip (with two stops) and never once encountered a cop we didn't know was already there. Not to say there was zero chance of one slipping through... but we were as prepared for a cannonball run style trip as we could be.

I'll add that I greatly prefer the Escort Passport Max to the Valentine. FAR FAR fewer false alerts. That Valentine was annoying at times.

Slight tangent for [icon]:

Ever driven to Gulfport down 49 and run across the BS "construction zones" in various rural locales? Love how they'd drop the speed limit from 55 to 35 for all of 100 yards just to nab out-of-towners.

...

Those apps you mention certainly weren't a thing 10-15 years ago ... I'm sure the game has changed quite a bit.

Oh yeah. I've been snagged in a similar trap up near Paris, TN. Total bull####. Nothing you can do though.... they know you're not coming back to fight it... and they know small town justice will fist you if you try.

If you guys have never driven out the desert area in the midwest, you can go 100 and not even know it.  Especially in a V6 or better.

The roads are flat and straight, it doesn't feel like you're going that fast.

Louisiana is the worst I've ever seen - the speed limit in I-10 suddenly changes from 70 to 60 when you cross a bridge.  There were cops on the other side of the road nailing people the second they hit the bridge and radioing ahead for another cop to pull cars over.  Just in the time I was there getting a ticket there were a half dozen more people pulled over (cop would just wave to people as they were going by to pull over).  Will never go back there outside of NO.

Yep. Hell with the endless horizon it can be maddening to NOT go fast... it can feel like you're not even getting anywhere or making progress unless you're moving pretty quickly. I can't imagine anything more soul sapping than driving 55mph on a flat straight midwest freeway.

I was wondering about this. Cops must write quite a few tickets throughout the week. How do all those cops make time to attend every court hearing? Or do they?

I'm curious cuz I'll be driving from Los Angeles to Phoenix for Memorial day weekend and plan to hit 110mph. Possibly 120mph if Yoshi and Toad start passing me.

First date is just to say guilty or not guilty.  Not guilty means a court date is scheduled and they will consider cops schedule.  They probably have a block of dates set aside that cops are urged to keep open.

They usually get overtime and are happy to show.

But everytime I've had a trial...they've showed.  However, I've seen half the courtroom empty out from dismissals because cop didn't show.

I'm surprised that 100mph is just a small fine and 2pts in CA.  That's slap on the wrist stuff.  You'll spend days in jail and lose your license for that here in VA.  Jason Werth got 5 days and 6 months recently.
Where did you get the info that 100 is just a small fine and only 2 pts?  What would 101 have been?  And is traffic school an option at a 100?

Always wondered about this, does this happen everywhere? We have a particular issue with these bridges over waterways - bayous/bogues, rivers, etc. - and yep sure enough you'd better be careful coming over on the other side, the cops hang out in the gully just over the dropoff.

Not in my experience, which is why I got hit.  Just cruising along in the middle of nowhere and BAM! a normal width bridge with a speed limit 10 mph less than the rest of the highway - no out of stater is going to be on the lookout for that.

Yes this is consistent with my what my buddy said.  They schedule all of theirs on specific days so they get overtime and get chunks of them done on the same day.   In the rare case where something came up and the cop doesn't show you would see a bunch of cases dismissed.

Am I the only one that just sets my cruise control 7-10 mph over and calls it a day?
I do this too, however, I've been pulled over and ticketed for having my cruise set at 75 on a 70 mph limit on an interstate.

Quick story:  Driving back to my small town from the nearest "big city" after a shopping day with the gf at the time.  Cops were out in full force that day for some reason, must have seen 8-10 of them within a 30 mile stretch.  I wasn't in a rush, so set the cruise on 75 traveling west.  I notice a trooper across the median driving east.  He gets even with me, hits his lights and his brakes, cuts the median, then gets behind me and flags me down.  I was incredulous.  He gives me the spiel about "I clocked you doing 75.  We have a zero tolerance policy around here for speeding, son."  The "son" is what really pissed me off.  Luckily I was young (maybe 20-21) and was able to take defensive driving class in exchange for points/ticket on my record.  The instructor told me that I was the first person she'd ever heard of in 12 years of teaching DD that got a ticket for going 5 over.

That sucks. I take great pride in passing police cars and state troopers at +5 when they're driving +3. I refuse to take a spot in a long line of cars dutifully following a cop at the speed limit.

They're speeding. I'm speeding. But you're inching past them so slowly that they know it would be a punk move to pull you over. FEELS AWESOME!

I just like driving fast.
Track days are fast.  Get a real track car and play where the car, track and equipment are made for going fast.

100+ on a highway only shows how little capacity you have to think or care about others on the road.  Your not proving anything when a Nissan Versa will hit a 100+.

Im sorry you have to drive a Nissan Versa.

I'm not saying to go over 100 but 90 isn't going to kill anybody on a highway with speed limit of 75.  I simply don't do it regularly because I don't want a ticket.

I do.  But 7-10mph over is 87-90mph here.  Pretty easy to get that up to 100 without noticing when you speed up to pass a car going a little bit slower than you in your lane while trying not to block the fast lane traffic coming behind you while you're over there.

There is a huge difference between a 75mph wreck and a 90mph wreck.  It is simple physics.  Track days are your answer if your into driving fast.
