12 Team Playoff Alignment (1 Viewer)

We are moving from a 2 division 10 team league to a 3 division 12 team league. We normally have 8 teams make the playoffs to keep all parties interested and start the playoffs during week 14 and end with our super bowl week 16. I would like to have 10 teams make the playoffs (top 3 teams in each division plus a wild card team, from the 3 that are left, that scores the most total points during the regular season. What are your thoughts on this?

I would like to hear what others do to see if there would be a better fit. Important to note is that our league is a combination Total Points League and Head to Head league. The Total Points Leaders payout is 80% of the purse compared to 20% for head to head champion. Thanks for your help.

If you have enough control over your playoff bracket, I recommend this:With 10 of 12 teams making the playoffs you should give a big advantage to the top playoff teams. The way to do that, in my opinion, is to give teams 1-4 a bye in week 14. That leaves you 5-10 playing in w14. Make 5, 8, and 10 face off in a three-way game, and do the same for 6, 7, and 9. Now you've got 6 teams: 1-4 and the two w14 winners. Have two more three-way games in week 15: first, team 1, 4, and the winner of (6,7,9); second, 2, 3, and the winner of (5,8,10). Finally, in week 16, a simple head-to-head between the two winners of the w15 three-way games. :banned:

to keep all parties interested
You have 8/10 or 10/12 teams making the playoffs? That sounds like it would make the season much less interesting, not more. If people really are regularly losing interest try adding some weekly prizes or a consolation bowl or something. In a 12 team league, I'd let no more than 6 teams in the playoffs. Three division winners, three wild cards (based on record or total points or whatever you want).

I pointed out in my post that the payouts for our league are 80/20 in the favor of total points so that is the owners primary focus and that is why we let more teams in the playoffs. We don't have much problem keeping owners interest throughout the year as we pay $75.00 per week for high score of the week as well as $1,200 for 1st place, $700.00 for 2nd place, $400.00 for 3rd place, etc - Suggestions?

Now, that's what I was looking for. Great idea. Thanks. Any others?

I agree way too many playoff teams we do 6 teams 3 div winners 3 wildcards top 2 seeds get a buy all division winners get $100 wildcards get $50 #1 overall seed gets additional. $150

I'd only send 4 teams to the playoffs in week 15-16. I understand that total points gets the biggest pay, but still only the best should go to the playoffs. a 14 week regular season allows for the fairest schedule possible- 2 games against division rivals and one against the rest of the league.

Yes, I'd suggest that since you don't have much problem keeping owners' interest throughout the year, you reduce the number of playoff teams. I'm sorry, but regardless of your format, I don't believe 10 teams should make the playoffs in a 12 team league.

7 Playoff Teams in a 12, 14 or 16 Team League is what I favor, primarily because I strongly feel there is only one 'best' Team at the end of the regular season, and that is the only Team that deserves special treatment in the form of a bye, if you have H2H Playoff Format...

Seed 1: Bye

2 v 7

3 v 6

4 v 5

Following week, Seed 1 vs lowest advancing seed, etc., etc.
