This appeared to be Lincecum's to lose for a while, but Carpenter might have caught him in the race. Still a ways to go...

Lincecum.Look at his K's and IP compared to the others.
Ks are the most overrated stat in the history of sports. You need to make at least 3 pitches to get a K, probably more. Give me the guy who throws groundball after groundball after groundball. Its nice to get a K when you need it ... but don't base an award like the Cy Young on it.

Lincecum has the edge in strikeouts and innings pitched, but Carpenter has the edge in ERA, WHIP and wins (wins are overrated, but voters do look at them).

Plus, in 21 starts this year, Carpenter has allowed more than three earned runs only twice. Lincecum has allowed more than three earned runs in four if his 25 starts.

Or to take it down a notch, Carpenter has allowed three runs or more in six out of his 21 starts, while Lincecum has allowed three runs or more in nine of his 25 starts.

I have a feeling many feel that Lincecum is the easy winner right now, but I think it is really close. It could go either way. I don't feel like Carpenter should be penalized for being a ground ball pitcher; he doesn't get as many strikeouts, but he is just as effective at getting outs.
