So this shootout happened less than 2 miles form the scene....what were they doing.

Probably trying to hide, maybe got noticed / flushed out. Hard to speculate this early. If (big if) they prove to be ISIS related, could have been regrouping to reload / re-arm and strike somewhere else when they were found.

Earlier this afternoon the San Diego Union Telegraph (?) reported there was a middle eastern man, but that is no longer on their page. I think that was the source of that. Also there supposedly an Arab sounding name stated over the police scanner, but I don't think there is confirmation. At one point local Fox also reported three white males in military gear.
