This is awful. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/28939475

  1. 14:01:
Evidence of the "appalling" abuse of at least 1,400 children in Rotherham, South Yorkshire over 16 years has been laid bare in a new report.
  2. 14:01:
The inquiry was carried out by Professor Alexis Jay, a former chief inspector of social work in Scotland.
  3. 14:02:
Her independent inquiry into how social services in Rotherham dealt with allegations of child sex abuse between 1997 and 2013 found girls as young as 11 were raped multiple times, trafficked to other towns and cities, beaten and doused in petrol.
14:12:
The inquiry found that a report highlighting the abuse was submitted to the police and the council in 2002, but "was effectively suppressed".
14:16:
Councillors and council officials were told about the abuse in 2004 and 2005 "in the most explicit terms", the report found. But it highlighted evidence of a "macho, sexist and bullying culture" within the council, which stopped it providing an effective response.

This story is just horrible... surprised yours is the only post- and that it's gone unanswered.

from one of the BBC articles:

Prof Jay said: "No-one knows the true scale of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham over the years. Our conservative estimate is that approximately 1,400 children were sexually exploited over the full inquiry period, from 1997 to 2013."

Revealing details of the inquiry's findings, Prof Jay said: "It is hard to describe the appalling nature of the abuse that child victims suffered."

The inquiry team found examples of "children who had been doused in petrol and threatened with being set alight, threatened with guns, made to witness brutally violent rapes and threatened they would be next if they told anyone".

Ch Supt Jason Harwin: "We've failed our young people"

Five men from the town were jailed for sexual offences against girls in 2010, but the report said police "regarded many child victims with contempt".

District Commander for Rotherham, Ch Supt Jason Harwin said: "Firstly I'd like to start by offering an unreserved apology to the victims of child sexual exploitation who did not receive the level of service they should be able to expect from their local police force.

"We fully acknowledge our previous failings."

Ch Supt Harwin said the force had "overhauled" the way it dealt with such cases and had successfully prosecuted a number of abusers.

But he admitted: "I accept that our recent successes... will not heal the pain of those victims who have been let down."

'Racism' fear

The report found: "Several staff described their nervousness about identifying the ethnic origins of perpetrators for fear of being thought as racist; others remembered clear direction from their managers not to do so."

Failures by those charged with protecting children happened despite three reports between 2002 and 2006 which both the council and police were aware of, and "which could not have been clearer in the description of the situation in Rotherham".

Prof Jay said the first of these reports was "effectively suppressed" because senior officers did not believe the data. The other two were ignored, she said.

The inquiry team found that in the early-2000s when a group of professionals attempted to monitor a number of children believed to be at risk, "managers gave little help or support to their efforts".

The report revealed some people at a senior level in the police and children's social care thought the extent of the problem was being "exaggerated".

We joke and debate about political correctness; however, this is where that PC BS can lead. Evil wears all colors of skin.

The Roterham story just goes on and on and on, unimaginable.

300 new suspects:

Rotherham child sex abuse: 300 new 'suspects' National Crime Agency says new investigation into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham identifies estimated 300 possible suspects

Background:

More than 1,400 children were sexually abused over a 16 year period by gangs of paedophiles after police and council bosses turned a blind eye for fear of being labelled racist, a damning report has concluded.

Senior officials were responsible for “blatant” failures that saw victims, some as young as 11, being treated with contempt and categorised as being “out of control” or simply ignored when they asked for help.

In some cases, parents who tried to rescue their children from abusers were themselves arrested. Police officers even dismissed the rape of children by saying that sex had been consensual.

Downing Street on Tuesday night described the failure to halt the abuse in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, as “appalling”.

Only 16 arrested:

And probably some powerful people implicated:

It was in the US media a bit when it first came out. It's obviously covered a lot more extensively in England.

i am normally not for violence but if you abuse kids or your cover up kids being abused hey castration sounds just about fair to me have fun peeing in a bag take that to the bank bromigos

Unconscionable. How do these people live with themselves? Not one moral person stood up to this? Fear of being labeled a racist? WTF!

First I'm hearing of this...how is this not bigger news? The US Media would have field day with this.
How do you figure the US media would have a field day with this? They've known about it for a year and have intentionally buried it. It doesn't fit the narrative.
Given that "people in power" are involved, the US Media loves stories that bring down people in places of power. It' probably didn't get traction here b/c the "people in power" aren't anyone anybody here cares about.

I disagree with Olaf. The reason the media buried it is not because the predators were non-white; they buried it because they were Muslim Pakistanis, a traditionally reviled group in England. The English are traditionally as racist towards the "Pakis" as we are to certain subsections of our minority populations.

In that way, it presented everybody outside of the conservative blogosphere with a problem. It was (1) clearly within this specific and unassimilated Muslim social culture to perform these acts, organize them, and then morally justify it through their own hatred of their adopted country's culture and (2) it presented the media with an unassimilated, immigrant, traditionally discriminated-against group, if only in perception.

This was an awful story, and Servo up above nailed it. PC had become so ingrained within even policing institutions that the police and their superiors were either willfully negligent to stop it, or powerless to do so. A disgusting story, and a sort of reminder of the potential pitfalls of non-assimilation in extreme forms. It also shows the potential peril of institutionally adopting PC shibboleths that don't conform to certain uncomfortable truths about certain populations, in this case, that the Pakis did not like British culture and especially loved taking advantage of and bringing young British girls into a weird form of sexual slavery.
