1883 - Prequel to Yellowstone (1 Viewer)

Sad episode.  I really liked his character. He brought some humour to a dark show.  Looks like the tone is going to turn even darker now based on the preview.

Excellent series.
We saw it coming a mile a way. My heart still broke and my wife still cried.

A catch your breath episode.  Half of the wagon train was NOT killed by Comanches or drowned in a river this week.

This might be the best show going right now. It's the only one actively publishing new episodes that I make an effort to see the day they come out.

The voiceovers approach heavy handed every now and then, but they overall fit in conveying what's going on inside Elsa's head.

They do an incredible job of depicting how horrifyingly traumatic events and circumstances were for people at that time, whereas today most of us don't have any conception of how much that stuff would screw up your life. When's the last time you thought about how life threatening it would be to cross a river, or get through a storm?

I really love the pacing too, in other hands they may have moved things way too quickly. There's an intimidating vastness of time and space that infuses everything in the show.

Wife and I thought Elsa making out with the Indian during a tornado was ridiculous

But we are enjoying the series

I absolutely cannot believe how good this show is. Anybody missing this is missing the best new show in years imo.

We're watching it and enjoying. But my wife pointed out something that can't be unseen. Elsa's nose is always running.

On the show pacing. I was feeling impatient but after reading the thread, realize that yes, this will last a few seasons and we still have to end up wherever we're ending up. So no need to be in a rush. Yellowstone, same issues here for me on the forced plotlines. Feels a little played out for sure.

Still, I don't know how many times I can watch them sit in one place for 45 minutes of the show (a day or two) and hear "We gotta get goin' or we're never gonna make it!" That part is starting to bug me a little.

Love all the characters. The acting is much more consistently good-to-excellent than Yellowstone which is IMO very uneven. That might even be generous.

Ennis situation, same as others here. I saw it coming really early as well as her reaction.  Still got me a little and my wife cried.

As expected the last two episodes ramped things up. I won’t post any spoilers or comment on the season finale until others have had more time.

I give it a A- to B+. I had a few gripes with the pacing and a couple of small details but overall it’s was excellent.

B for me

Seemed like I enjoyed it a little less every week

Wife and I binged this over two weeks and then watched the finale Sunday night. We to thought the tornado Indian make out scene was stupid - @Cowboysfan8. We also picked up on the constant stream of snot out of Elsa’s nose was extreme - @greenmountaingoat.

Overall we loved the show and are looking forward to a second season.

I never noticed the snot until my wife pointed it out, then saw it everytime of course

My wife read somewhere that there were plans by Paramount. Could have been a rumor that someone wrote or made up. Hoping there is one though!

Interestingly I enjoyed it more each week. The first few weeks the deep philosophizing and preaching from17yr old was just to much for me and got in the way of the story.  Once I was able to block that out I started to enjoy it much more.  And as a father of a daughter the last few episodes really sunk their hooks in

I’ve read somewhere that the next one will be ‘1932’.
The producer hinted that there could be a few more expanded episodes but not another season. Taylor stated his vision was always to just show the journey to Montana for the family and for 1932 to be the next window into the Duttons history.

Interesting. Will have to check it out.

My wife and I are currently watching Yellowstone and while it's well-shot, decently paced with an interesting enough storyline, and pretty well acted, I'm starting to lose interest as I'm finding no redeemable character to root for* and I fear it's going to go off the rails Sons of Anarchy style.

*The Duttons are essentially a criminal street gang no different than the bloods or the Hells Angels and they made the other characters so far unlikeable and annoying. Even Kayce's wife got frustrating and unlikeable for me when she woke up from her coma or whatever and did a 180 on Kayce for no discernible reason. So, yeah, even just six episodes in I'm finding myself not caring for a particular character.

Plenty of characters to like and root for in 1883..  Gotta say, as a girl dad, the last few episodes were tough... especially the last one.

I was looking at IMDB to see who played Noemi (because I think she's beautiful) and I hadnt seen her before.  Saw she is/was married to Tim Robbins.  Well, they are apparently going through divorce now.  She's 32, he's 63.   :oldunsure:

According to IMDB 1883 is the only thing she has ever been in.

I think the last couple of episodes weren't quite as interesting as the previous ones. It seemed like it became a little more focused on setting things up for Yellowstone and less about the fate of the pioneers in general - particularly as the wagon train was whittled down to almost nothing. Still a really good show.

I think I agree with this but it also makes sense for them to do it that way. I would have watched a second season of them on the trail though.

Loved the show, didn’t really think they’d go through with Elsa but at some point they were committed and had to.

That is my biggest problem with Yellowstone, not a single redeemable character. Everyone has killed for Dutton or to try and get rid of Dutton.

Spoilers.......

I absolutely loved the exchange between the last tribal chief that James talks to and who points him to Paradise Valley. So much foreshadowing going on in that conversation. Loved the Elsa and Sam story line, seemed to be a direct tie in / comparison to Kacey and Monica.

This was one of the things I had in mind when I said the last two episodes weren't quite as good as they were focusing on setting things up for Yellowstone. It was a bit too on the nose for me and detracted from the episode.

This show is extremely well done, but ended up too dark for my tastes. I appreciated it but didn’t exactly enjoy watching.

What is name of Elsa's little brother in 1883 and is he in 1923? I don't remember her having 2 brothers in 1883 but in 1993 there seems to be two brothers.

Dutton Family Tree

Her little brother in 1883 is John, I believe he is dead in 1923. His son is the young guy on the ranch who marries the blond. His brother is Spencer, the war hero/hunter.
Thanks. I thought Jack and Spencer were brothers. Spencer is his uncle. Did John die in the gun battle at start of 1923? I assume Spencer was born after 1883.

Yes, John is the one who died in the gun battle that was standing next to Harrison Ford’s character when the scottish sheepherder dude attacked them.

About 6 episodes in on this and I like it a lot better than Yellowstone.....Sam Elliot is awesome, obviously. McGraw and Hill are really good. Good show so far.
