Been playing fantasy for well over 10 years(a few different formats) but never a idp league.  Work league is adding idp, 2 LB, 2 DL, 2 DB.

league is 14-16 teams this year, just wondering what round to start drafting defensive players. It's seems like some of the elite guys start going around round 7,8 (watt,Wagner,Collins, kuechly)

do you typically go with LB , DB first seems like they accumulate more points and you can get DL pretty late.

Also we only have 6 bench spots, is it worth using any of the spots for defensive players

thanks for any advise

The biggest component to decide when to start taking IDP's is if the scoring system makes IDP's equivalent to the offensive side of the ball or not.  For example, if the offensive players are scoring 20 pts a game but your IDP's are scoring 5 then no need to spend much time on the IDP side.  They won't do much for your team.  However, if the top IDP's score similar to the top offensive guys then there is more importance.

Also, have any of the other owners played IDP before or are you all starting on the same foot?  I have found that in my larger league similar to yours with equivalent scoring between offense and defense that the teams that win are the teams that have strong defense.  Everyone has easy access to information for the offensive side so most teams are similar and the difference makers are the owners that can own the defensive side of the ball.  If everyone is starting from scratch, then I wouldn't worry too much about going way early for IDP guys.  The name guys will probably go early and you can take advantage by padding your offense (although with the small benches that may not be possible).  I would try and fill out most of your offensive side and look to get a top 5 LB based on your scoring system so target one after the first couple go off the board.  I would focus your draft prep on the IDP side so that you can get no-name guys that will produce like some of the more publicized guys.  This will be where you can gain your advantage by waiting on the IDP side because you can similar players at a much better value than the name guys.

As far as what IDP's to target early will depend on your scoring system however universally DB's are very inconsistent and there are always new top scorers that seem to come out of nowhere so you shouldn't spend high draft capital on DB's.  Typically you want three down LB's that are around 90-100 solo tackles a year to build around.  DL are typically inconsistent and centered around sacks as they will usually get around 20-30 tackles a year so you want to target guys that get 10-15 sacks consistently.

With such a small bench (you didn't say what your total roster size is) you probably don't want to waste those spaces on DB's and you may want one LB and one DL on the bench.  Seems like with the addition of the IDP's it may be worth suggesting increasing the bench size to accommodate those new positions.

Thanks for the insight, this is only my 2nd year playing with these guys, and it's a online draft, so I'm not sure the experience level of the other owners

Pay attention to the scoring as galley said- one year a league I was in added idp and the commish didn't want decimal scoring. He made assisted tackles worth 1 and solo worth 2. Patrick Willis outscored every rb except LT that year for me. I would also float that idea out there to add a bench spot or two, seems reasonable.
