2006 BUMP: One guy in my auction league (1 Viewer)

Depends on how he used the rest of his money. If he got a lot of great value for the other 20%, then I think it's fantastic.

I like the strategy. I might of went Alexander & LJ (if only because the backups will cost nothing).

I'm sure Brad Johnson, Kitna, Warner, Volek will come cheap & piece together those old WR's along with a TE (who I'd never spend much of anything on anyways).

I like the strategy for an auction beginner. Beginners often way overbid on a few players, leave way too much money at the end, etc. and end up not getting much value for their $.

Spending 80% of your cap on two elite players ensures that 80% of your money was well-spent and that you'll probably only be able to get good values the rest of the way.

This wouldn't be possible in our 12 team league because all of the top 3 will go for more than 50% of the cap but I think it is a decent strategy. Feast or famine but you have to take chances to win the league anyway. In our league you maybe could get a LT and Jackson and you'd be broke. But there are enuff decent dollar players left at the very end that you could find some value (because everybody overspends early).

A guy in our league did this last year with LT and Shaun. I still don't get how it happened, but he also managed to get Larry Fitz, Shockey, and Hasselbeck and set the single season scoring record and lost in the championship by one point on Monday night. One injury could have killed him, but those guys stayed healthy all year.

8 team auction league $100 budget, $100 FAAB during the season.

My team:

Code:
Pos Name Team Bye SalaryQB Matt Hasselbeck Seahawks (SEA) 5 5QB Drew Brees Saints (NOR) 7 1RB Ronnie Brown Dolphins (MIA) 8 23RB Willie Parker Steelers (PIT) 4 14WR Chad Johnson Bengals (CIN) 5 15WR Plaxico Burress Giants (NYG) 4 3WR Donald Driver Packers (GNB) 6 3TE Alge Crumpler Falcons (ATL) 5 2R/W/T Chester Taylor Vikings (MIN) 6 11B-QB Aaron Brooks Raiders (OAK) 3 1B-RB Dominic Rhodes Colts (IND) 6 3B-RB Brian Westbrook Eagles (PHI) 9 14B-RB Laurence Maroney Patriots (NWE) 6 2B-WR Rod Smith Broncos (DEN) 4 2B-WR Matt Jones Jaguars (JAC) 6 1
His team:
Code:
QB Jake Delhomme Panthers (CAR) 9 5QB Jake Plummer Broncos (DEN) 4 1RB Larry Johnson Chiefs (KAN) 3 39RB LaDainian Tomlinson Chargers (SDG) 3 40WR Joey Galloway Buccaneers (TAM) 4 1WR Michael Clayton Buccaneers (TAM) 4 1WR Antonio Bryant 49ers (SFO) 7 1TE Tony Gonzalez Chiefs (KAN) 3 3R/W/T Corey Dillon Patriots (NWE) 6 3B-QB Billy Volek Titans (TEN) 7 1B-RB Samkon Gado Packers (GNB) 6 1B-RB Fred Taylor Jaguars (JAC) 6 1B-WR Drew Bennett Titans (TEN) 7 1B-WR Keyshawn Johnson Panthers (CAR) 9 1B-TE Chris Cooley Redskins (WAS) 8 1
My team is not nearly as sexy, but my WR are vastly superior and I have excellent RB depth. I'm actually thinking of offering this guy Chad Johnson and Westbrook for LT or LJ. Maybe he'll bite.

You guys should be ashamed for letting him get all that value. Gonzo for 3? Surely someone had 4 to block that.

Letting him have Fred Taylor for 1 makes you guys look very bad IMO.

Extremely risky move on his part in doing so. If one of them goes down or doesn't quite produce like in the past, he might be screwed.....................

Or will he? Looking at the full picture and seeing the rest of his team, he did an incredible job in finding value and picked up some great players that don't plain suck (like Cooley, Galloway, etc.)

I like that team even more now....

As I look at it a second time, it even starts to make me slightly mad - how can a guy get away with this? his backups/flex:

R/W/T Corey Dillon Patriots (NWE) 6 3

B-QB Billy Volek Titans (TEN) 7 1

B-RB Samkon Gado Packers (GNB) 6 1

B-RB Fred Taylor Jaguars (JAC) 6 1

B-WR Drew Bennett Titans (TEN) 7 1

B-WR Keyshawn Johnson Panthers (CAR) 9 1

B-TE Chris Cooley Redskins (WAS) 8 1

$9 for all that? Cooley, Bennett, and Dillon are starters in a 12-team league. Fred Taylor's close. Keyshawn's respectable. Volek's a high upside backup in a 12-teamer.

Someone should see how much that group of players went for in the MB/Staff auction (halved since they had a 200 cap).

I love his team as well, but it is a 8 team league.

I dont see why people would play 8 teamers, but this is definitely the way to go (get two studs).

Even the garbage in a 8 man league is solid with plenty of upside.

Agreed, 1 dollar waiver wire players will produce from week to week, you might as well load up on studs and fill out your roster with players that are definately on teams in 12 man leagues.

Honestly, I trying to figure out how he has able to fund his entire WR corp for $5. Even in an 8-man league seems like he should have been forcing Jericho C. or Bernard Berian into his line-up. Yeah, his Wrs are not to your level, but they are probably not going losing games for him.

On the plus side...with this much lead time you should be able to get a huge discount on the cost to engrave his trophy.

Question: Does your league have limits on the number of roster spots for each position?

his team looks great for 80% going to two player. it should be noted this was an 8 team league. i'm not sure his roster would look so nice in a 12-14 team league

Also note that this is a 15 man roster. In an 8 team league with a roster of 15 there are probably still some nice starters sitting out there.

 please explain.
I don't think he meant that roster wouldn't look good in a 12-14 league team.....I think he meant he wouldn't have been able to get a roster that looked that good in bigger league.
okay. that makes sense
yes that's what i meant. sorry for the confusion.

He won't bite. He didnt go through the trouble of getting LT and LJ only to trade down. As far as the wr's, there is still a lot of time for WR situations to pan out. Every year there are a handful of WR's that come out of nowhere and can be picked up cheap. Playing the waiver wire right can get you a very productive group of recievers.

The funny thing is he claims he accidentally bid $40 on LT. We use an online auction site, and he said he was trying to do something else, but accidentally hit the bid button.

So if this guy did have a great draft, it was totally dumb luck. Which also makes me think he'll be willing to trade with me.

What do you think of a play like this? Obviously the rest of his team is terrible, but he does have two huge horses.
It's all relative. His WR and Bench stink compared to the rest of the league. This is an 8 teamer, so what might look like a good roster on a 12 team league is pretty bad here.Anyway, guess who plays this guy in week three when both LT and LJ are on a bye...

ME.

We're all excited.

Im calling BS on this or at a minimum BS on your league. If this is for $$ let me know if you got an extra spot I could use the funds

I think this stategy is that much better in an 8-team league. He's got the wire to scour all year (not to mention with only 8 teams the talent pool available is that much larger).

His bench is good enough:

B-RB Fred Taylor Jaguars (JAC) 6 1

B-WR Drew Bennett Titans (TEN) 7 1

B-WR Keyshawn Johnson Panthers (CAR) 9 1

B-TE Chris Cooley Redskins (WAS) 8 1

Gado & Volek, while I'm bullish right now on, could have solid value. Not only that, consider the value Volek to Bennett had just a couple years ago.

I would of done that same exact thing he did. 8 teams X only 15 players per team....that's only the top 120 players in the football. I actually did this in my baseball keeper several years ago....spent a boatload on A-rod and Pujols. Ended with $1 guys like Mauer, Peavy, Zambrano and Reyes.

Or Delhomme for 5. He never would have gotten away w/those prices in any league that knows how to auction, frankly. And given that, IMO it's a dumb strat. You need a TEAM to win a title, not 1/2 guys.

Well, everyone spent all their money on RB and WR early in the draft. How do you think I was able to pull Hasselbeck for $5, Brees and Brooks for $1 each, Burress and Driver for $3 each? This was the first football auction draft any of us had ever done. I went for extreme depth at RB (Brown, FWP, Westy, C. Taylor, Rhodes, Maroney), and others spent ridiculous amounts on one or two players.Bottom line, some of the top players are going down with injuries, it happens every year. Who, then, becomes the ideal trading partner? The guy with RB depth. I won a championship last year when my first two picks of the draft were Deuce McAllister and Daunte Culpepper because I had huge RB depth. I think those of you who think my team doesn't stand a chance against this guy discount the effect of injuries and in season management.

This is a real league all with people I know. It was supposed to be a 10 teamer, but 2 guys dropped out when they heard we were going to an auction format. Anyway, you're not invited to join because you are merely an internet personna who I do not know personally.

I agree with the majority of the posters, that for this league, this was a good strategy. With only 8 teams and relatively small rosters, there must have been a lot of value at the end of the draft. Plus, there have to be a lot of viable players on the waiver wire now.

In a long-standing live 12 team auction draft a week ago, a guy "bought" both LJ and Alexander for only ~ 70% of the cap ($182 of $260).

I'd post his roster but the Commish has yet to input into the website.

This is a deeper league inasmuch as each team starts 1 QB, 2 RB, 4 WR/TE, 1 D, 1 K, so there are 2 additional WR slots to deal with.

I like my team better than the LJ/Alexander team. There is little depth and some weakness at starting WR slots.

He'll be devastated by that blemish on his 15-1 record

Ok first, you need to get all those hours back that you spent preparing and start over. Second, run immediately to your nearest Sporting goods store and have the trophy engraved with his team name as Champs for 2006. Third, either think about retiring or play some poker to get better at calling out other teams on players/bluffs. Seriously, his team is an outrage in an auction format by allowing him to obtain Gonzo and decent value at WR with a QB like Delhomme too who should be solid this year, I don't see how he can lose. I will check in at the end of the year but I don't expect this to change much. Best of luck...next year. :)
