2006 Supplemental Draft (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
It usually is held in late June or early July. While I doubt it will provide impact rookies, I was trying to figure who might declare for the supplemental draft and where they might be drafted.

Lately, teams have generally been reluctant to use a high pick in the draft. Last year talk was teams would use a 2nd or 3rd rounder on Manuel Wright and a 4th or 5th rounder on Roscoe Crosby. Only Wright was taken and with a 5th.

THe ones I could come up with are:

1. Ahmad Brooks LB Virginia

Talented LB once thought to have 1st or 2nd round talent. He was kicked off the team in January. If he works out well I could see a team that needs LBs taking a shot in the 5th or 6th round.

2. Gary Russell RB Minnesota

Last I heard he did not enroll in the spring due to academic problems. IIRC he was the heir apparent to Maroney. Not sure if he enrolled somewhere else or will reenroll in the fall. But he is clearly a candidate for the supplemental draft.

Given MBIII at Dallas, and Maroney being picked in the 1st round, someone may use a 7th rounder.

Any thoughts? Any others?

Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks, Texas fullback Ahmard Hall, Iowa State defensive end/linebacker Jason Berryman and Hutchinson (Kan.) Junior College linebacker Dave Dixon have gained entry to the NFL supplemental draft on July 13, according to the league's player personnel office.

Brooks and Hall have workouts scheduled for Thursday. Dixon's pro day will take place next Monday at Westbrook High School in Beaumont, Texas, where already seven teams are planning to send a scout.

Players have until June 30 to submit paperwork for review by the NFL's player personnel department, and they cannot schedule "pro day"-type workouts until their applications have been approved. Any NFL team that would attend or work out a player before that time would be subject to a fine or possible loss of a future draft choice.

"All players must request and then file paperwork with our office before being granted special eligibility to the [supplemental] draft," one NFL player personnel staff member said. "[We] do not encourage or make public these rules as we are not in the market of recruiting or enticing prospects."

"This draft is for the sole purpose of dealing with issues that arise after the regular draft, not as an option for players that want to jump into our league", another staff member explained.

One potential supplemental draft prospect – former Minnesota running back Gary Russell – who was expected to replace New England Patriots rookie Laurence Maroney as the Golden Gophers' featured back this season – has not sought entry, according to the league office. But Russell has few other options.

Dismissed by the school last winter for academic problems, Russell is not enrolled at Minnesota for the summer after taking junior college classes in the spring with hopes of re-joining the Gophers, and it is unknown whether he is planning to enroll this fall. School officials will only comment on players on the 2006 roster.

He could sit out the 2006 season and hope to complete the two years of eligibility he has remaining. He could also transfer to an NAIA school since Division I-AA and Division II programs are not allowed to accept Division I-A athletes who are not in good academic standing at their prior program. Or Russell could spend the rest of this year preparing for the 2007 NFL draft.

I think Brooks is definitely worth a look for the Eagles.

Brooks held a workout for pro scouts on June 22 at the University of Virginia. On a 96-degree day and the heat index up at 110, Brooks ran on AstroTurf and worked out on grass that was dried-out. Bengals linebacker coach Ricky Hunley conducted the workout. There were representatives from 31 teams at the workout, with only the Vikings not in attendance. Mike Nolan from the 49ers was the only head coach there. He was joined by San Francisco VP of player personnel Scot McCloughan. Brooks will work out for the 49ers at their place for two days next week. Randy Mueller of the Dolphins, Mike Murphy from the Cowboys and Calvin Branch from the Raiders were also there. Brooks lost 32 pounds in 10 weeks (he was measured at 6-foot-3, 260 pounds) and passed five drug tests in the last 10 weeks. He ran three times, timed at 4.68, 4.75 and 4.74 in the 40, with 10-yard splits of 1.53, 1.58 and 1.58 and 20-yard splits of 2.73, 2.75 and 2.75. His arm span measured 33½ inches and his hands measured 9½. He had a 32-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-8 long jump, a 4.43 short shuttle, an 11.84 long shuttle, a 7.43 three-cone drill and 19 benches. The conditions were not really good, just average.

The day before the workout, Brooks met with John Dorsey and Reggie McKenzie (GB), had a meeting with Ricky Hunley (CIN) and had dinner with Jerry Reese (NYG).

Brooks, who played linebacker in college but might project as a Julius Peppers-type defensive end in the pros, missed six games with a right knee injury last year. He visited Dr. James Andrews on June 12 for the knee to be examined and that report was made available to all NFL teams.

Brooks' father, Perry Brooks, was a defensive tackle whom New England drafted in Round 7 in 1976. He never played for New England but played 92 games for Washington.

He will continue to work out under Chip Smith in Atlanta.

Update on Berryman, 6/13

There were 17 teams at his workout, including John Dorsey (GB), Scott McCloughan (SF) and Kent McCloughan (Scott's father) from the Raiders. That's a large contingent. He worked out indoors on what was considered a slow track. Dorsey conducted the drills, which lasted 45 minutes, and Berryman did a good job.

LB Berryman (6-0¾, 235) was clocked at 4.67 in the 40 (1.61 after 10; 2.71 after 20), 4.39 in the short shuttle, and 7.33 in the three-cone drill. He also had a 9-foot-11 broad jump, a 32-inch vertical jump and 17 lifts.

This guy was left out above:

Ahmad Hall, FB, Texas: Hall served in the Marines and wasn't eligible for the regular draft. He worked out at Texas' Pro Day on March 22 and was measured at 5-10¾, 232 pounds. He ran his 40s in 4.53 and 4.55 and also had a 35-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-9 long jump, 4.20 short shuttle, 7.21 three-cone drill and 24 bench presses

Is this ALWAYS the case? Can they have one in the middle of the NFL season or any other time if they choose?

considering i'v heard some people talk about brooks like he would have been a lock for the #1 lb off the board, this was a very disapointing workout for him.

Just passing Info along... Dolphins GM meets with linebacker Ahmad Brooks (full article)

by JASON COLE

The Dolphins have taken an interest in former University of Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who is considered by many the top player available in the NFL's supplemental draft on July 13.

Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller and director of college scouting Ron Labadie were among those who attended Brooks' workout Thursday.

Mueller and Labadie met with Brooks after the workout.

In addition, the Dolphins sent Brooks to Michigan last week to meet with Lon Rosen, a psychologist and longtime friend of Dolphins coach Nick Saban, agent Greg Williams said Friday.

Rosen does character research on players for Saban.

Williams also said he presented information to scouts, coaches and executives in attendance, showing that Brooks has passed drug tests taken on a regular basis over the past two months. Williams acknowledged that Brooks had ''issues'' with drug use during college.

Brooks was arrested in March 2003 on a marijuana possession charge.

According to two sources, Brooks failed multiple drug tests for marijuana use during college.

That led to the school's dismissal of him from the team this winter.

''Ahmad knows that he has to make good decisions in the future and change the people he hangs out with if he's going to take advantage of the athletic talent he has,'' Williams said. ``He's a good kid who wants to get this turned around and be an example to kids about how someone can change for the better.''

Brooks weighed 260 pounds, down approximately 30 pounds from two months ago. The weight issue is another question for NFL teams.

Brooks was considered one of the top high school players in Virginia history before going to college.

Some scouts have said he has the talent to be a first-round pick.

However, the off-field issues could drop Brooks into the fourth or fifth round of the supplemental draft.

So this guy is pretty much a perfect fit for Nick Saban's Dolphins. Does anyone get the impression that he is running the Dolphins like he ran his college program? Where you can just take problem guys in and hope that the University overlooks the problems, only the NFL doesn't work that way. As a Bills fan, all I can do is hope that the Dolphins end up with Brooks and that Vick and Brooks hang out and keep each other company.

I believe that's the rule.NFL is not so into making exceptions(see Clarett). The only supp draft that MIGHT have been a different date may have been the USFL one but I don't know. In that regard we're talking 100 players. It'd take alot for the NFL to have a supp draft at some other time

Ahmad Brooks Pro-Day results Premium Story

Ahmad Brooks

By: TFY Draft Preview

Date: Jun 23, 2006

The temperature was well over 100-degrees yesterday on the campus of UVA. More than forty scouts representing some twenty-two NFL teams converged on the university to watch Ahmad Brooks workout as the supplemental draft draws near.

The bulk of the workout was run by John Dorsey of the Green Bay Packers and Ricky Hunley, linebacker coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. Trainer Chip Smith from the Atlanta region also helped out.

Brooks, who weighed almost 290-pounds two months ago, measured in at 6-feet-4-inches and 260-pounds. He completed 19 reps on the bench, posted a 9-foot/8-inch broad jump and 32-inch vertical leap.

All the teams present were handed a medical report from Dr. James Andrews of Alabama which gave Brooks a clean bill of health. According to Andrews, nothing irregular showed up on the MRI's conducted on Brooks surgically repaired knee. Results of drug tests administered to Brooks over the past ten weeks, all of which were negative, were also available.

Despite the heat Brooks took three shots at running the forty. The first times ranged from 4.56-to-4.59, then a 4.68 on the second and finally a 4.73 on his final try.

As previously mentioned 22 teams were on hand with the Giants, Niners and Dolphins sending the largest contingents. The Giants and Dolphins have set up individual interviews with Brooks in the coming weeks. Brooks had previously met with officials from the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals and Green Bay Packers.

Surprising to many the New England Patriots have shown no interest in Brooks to date. The New York Jets had a single scouts in attendance and also have little interest in the linebacker.

Where will he go in July's supplemental draft?

Scouts on hand undoubtedly feel Brooks would've been the third rated prospect entering the season (after Brady Quinn and Adrian Peterson) had he been academically eligible to play at UVA in '06.

That being the case, there is an agreement Brooks has first round physical skills and it is just a question as to who may roll the dice and take a shot at him in either the second or third round in the supplemental draft.
