2007 Great QB Debate (1 Viewer)

gzilla,You do know that Culpepper can throw the ball 70 yards on a rope right?I do not know anything about Russell. But forgive me for being skeptical of Russell having comparable arm strength to Culpepper. That would be simply amazing.
About Culpepper, I'd like to see some video of what you are talking about. I've always thought Culpepper's arm was overrated (not bad mind you, but overrated). I don't care to argue that however. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Like the other poster said, prepare to be impressed.
Fair enough my interest in definitly buzzing.Don't have any video just a long time Viking fan. Culpeppers arm is not overrated. He had to be careful to not overthrow Moss sometimes.

I'm confused as to what was funny.
He was on the run and hit the WR in stride 40/50 yds down field, not sure what more you could ask for.
Actually, it was 59 yards downfield.I think the point was a ball thrown on the run 60 yards is tough to do...even tougher when the ball is not a spiral. It makes the arm strength even more impressive.

 It was funny b/c it wasn't even a good throw.

It was a nice throw although my laptop here is a bit fuzzy.Perhaps I am spliting hairs here but I am pretty sure you have seen CPep make the same throw with hardly any rainbow arc on it. That is what I mean by a rope.

For those of you who have only seen Russell in the Sugar Bowl, be prepared to be amazed at the arm strength. As far as mobility, he did not begin to run the ball for LSU untill late this year. He has strong pocket mobility and scrambleability because of his size and arm strength. I can not count how many of his hilight reel throws were when he was flushed from the pocket and throwing 40+ yards on the run. He's a cross between Culpepper, Leftwich and Jeff George. He has some of Culpepper's mobility, but will not be a running QB. He is a big sized pocket passer like Leftwich with a much bigger arm. He's got a cannon arm like George but is not a headcase. The wonderlick will be interesting to see.

Russell is in a different league that Quinn, Smith and Brohm.

I think it pretty difficult to argue arm strength but you are right that CPep throws one of the prettiest deep balls in the league. In any case Russell has the best arm in this class he seems to take some unnecessary risks deep because of it too which will have to stop in the pros.

Brad Johnson can throw the ball 40-50 yards downfield too. But the defense has a lot more time to react to his deep ball than it does CPeps. Ducks like that get picked off a lot more.

There are a lot of Qbs who can throw the ball that far with enough arc on it. But only the Qbs with great arm strength can throw balls like that on a rope. It matters a lot on the deep outs ect. too.

I could be wrong but I belive I've heard that Kyle Boller can throw the ball 50 plus yards on his knees, what has arm strength got him? Russell will not have 30 td pass totaled in the next 4 yeats!!!

This year, BOller completed exactly 60% of his 55 passes. That is the first time he has completed 60% of his passes since he was a junior in high school. (Seriously, look it up). Boller's problem isn't arm strength, it's accuracy.

T. Smith

Comparison: Seneca Wallace

Shouldnt be listed anywhere near the other 3.
:bag: But it's late and I'll bite... Troy Smith is 4th in Passer Rating

...10th in Completion Percentage

...5th in Passing TD's

...is 12th in YPA

...has a 6 to 1 TD/INT Ratio

Seneca Wallace senior stats

2002 443 244 55.1 3,245 15 18

2002 123 437 3.6 8

Troy Smith senior stats

2006 199 297 2507 67.0 30 5

2005 136 611 4.5 11

Anyone still thinking first round for Troy Smith? :banned:

If you are judging by this game probably not, but I'd say it is hard to tell how good he is without his #1 WR, no running game to mention and a porous OL that gave him no time against a great defense. That would be like judging a carpenter on his work after you broke all of his tools.Judging from the complete book of work, I'd he is not a top 10 guy, but it's not out of the question that a team like Baltimore takes him to be groomed by Air McNair.

In the late 1st/2nd round I'd take Troy Smith over [brohm] in a heartbeat. He has the physical tools, the leadership abilities, and has played his best in the biggest games (and we'll see one more example on Monday).

Quinn vs. Russell is the real debate here.
Or not.I'm not high on Brohm and Troy Smith wet the bed tonight. Aside from Russell and Brady just forget the 1st day QB's altogether.

OSU RB averaged 6.2 a carry (10 rush 62 yards td)
True, Pittman did have a high average, but the team only had 43 yds on 23 carries, that is not exactly a great rushing effort. I would have to say that was one of the OL worst efforts I've ever seen in college football, I felt like I was watching the Raiders against the Chargers in week 1.

C'mon the best of the best wouldn't have had a good game with the way Florida's D played tonight. Apparently having almost 2 months off does affect a team.
