2007 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread (1 Viewer)

I still think TJ has a chance to be a good starter. We saw him start the season looking pretty bad, not throwing very much, and missing open guys when he did throw. Got banged up and missed a couple of starts. After coming back, he looked a little better each week until weeks 15 and 16. Week 17 he looked a little better again. So after having his first full training camp and regular season getting the starters reps, I think he made strides. He looks to have the temperament to be a starter in the league. His obvious needs are improving his footwork and mechanics. Giving him some decent targets that can catch the ball could make a world of difference.

AD looked like an all world rookie to me. He will only get better as he learns all of the things outside of his instinctual running abilities. Once he can stay on the field every down, he should really blossom.

Thankfully, we will probably never see Troy Williamson in a Viking uniform again after that big drop. I hope he's taken care of his money, because he'll never make that money again. At least not in the NFL. Sidney Rice looks to have the ability to develop into a solid #2 WR. I like his potential, but don't think he'll ever be a true #1 unless he really fills out his frame. Bobby Wade should not be anything more than a #3/#4 on a good team. Andre Allison still has a chance, but obviously needs more time. I like to think he has at least #3 ability. I think WR is the co-biggest need on this team (tied with DE). The sad thing is there are no FA WRs that will be able to come in and help. Unless you're talking about T.O. or Randy Moss, WRs don't change teams and dominate very often. Bringing in rookies is an even longer shot. What we saw out of Rice is probably about the most you could expect. It's pretty depressing to know you're likely going to have almost the same WR corps next season.

Shiancoe: bust because he's not that good or because the QB couldn't find him? How about some of both with a sprinkle of bad hands?

Jared Allen. Do EVERYTHING within your means to get this guy if KC doesn't lock him up. Otherwise, you're looking at Edwards, Robison and who? Kenechi's not worth what he's making now, let alone a raise. You can't count on James ever playing again.

I don't think there's any way Dwight Smith returns after butting heads with Childress all season. I'm not as worried about Sharper or the CBs as some others here. Improve the pass rush and watch the CB play improve along with it.

8-8 isn't too bad for starting a rookie QB (yes I know he's technically a 2nd year player). It would have been nice to make the playoffs even if it was a one and done, just to get the feet wet of your young players and give them a taste of the post season.

I prayed to Jesus to make this come true. I'm not sure how much pull I have with him though.

I have been on record stating that I do not think Chad Pennington is a very good QB, but I do think he would be an upgrade for Minnesota. Pennington plays well in a dome where his rag arm is not impacted as much and he is a good play action QB who can manage a great Running attack and a solid defense.

Reportedly, Allen is looking for the same type of money Freeney got last year. http://www.kansascity.com/sports/chiefs/story/424364.html

Vikes will supposedly be $33m under the cap.I think he'd be worth it.

I'm putting my new mock together and am trying to shoehorn a DE in for the Vikes' pick. I had Calais Campbell, but I'm really thinking he drops out of the 1st. Lawrence Jackson is another consideration.

Would they go WR in the first if it were DeSean Jackson or Reggie Kelly?

This thread SHOULD be dead and there should be a 2008 Viking thread active already...but.... here are my 2 cents for this off-season (won't touch 2007 as most of the things I feel have been said)......

Get a veteren QB in here who can play now. Action Jackson was a tease for us. He can look good when the running game is clicking. Teams will have to respect the passing game if we have a passing QB.

I heard NcNabb as a name being thrown around. I've been saying him for almost a year now to get him this off season. I think he'd be worth a 2nd or 3rd round pick in return and perhaps a conditional mid-round the following year as well (and NOT TWO #1s as I read somewhere). McNabb needs a change of scenary so it's most likely going to be US or Chicago as he's from there originally I believe.

Draft and free agency-wise, we need TWO pass rushing DE's, a pass catching TE and Safety help. If we have $33 mill to spend, then I'd want a vet WR in here as well as some of you feel Ferguson isn't good enough for now. I also love Rice, almost given hope on Williamson and am neutral on Wade. I'd assume if we started 2008 Sunday we'd go with Wade and Ferguson as starters with Rice #3 and eventually Rice starts over Ferguson.

We're a solid team with dire need of a QB so as I think JIM said we have a small window here to acheive NOW so get the QB in now and don't over-spend on average talent like we did last offseason.

This is the most important part of the offseason. Why did we give Shiancoe a big contract again? Like others have said, Jared Allen would look GREAT in purple. Give him the money. He would singlehandedly change our pass rush from mediocre to good.

Javon Walker wants out of Denver. I know he's not an all-world receiver, but he's better than anyone we got. Would a 2nd round pick get it done?

I would think if a "cancer" like Randy Moss is worth a 4th rounder, then Walker could be had for something in that neighborhood. Shanahan won't take any crap from people like that. Would be nice since he was in the West Coast offense in Green Bay. Who knows.I always thought the Vikings had a ton of cap money but I read somewhere that they were only about 13 million below for next season. I didn't think this was right but did see it somewhere (no link, sorry), so need some clarification as to how much they have. I know they used money to sign Fat Pat and a couple other guys, but would think they have plenty to go get people. Anyone know for sure?

Either the Pioneer Depressed or the Red Star Tribune had a number of $33 million last week.

Maybe, but I think Shanahan is smarter than the folks in Oakland. Maybe they'd take back that 3rd rounder they gave us for Walker? I really think a guy like that would flourish in this offense. He would always be single covered. My only concern is that attitude. Who says he doesn't bring the same thing here.

I hope PP/ST are right, but Peter King has the Vikes in the bottom 8 for cap space [$14.88 million] heading into Spring 2008. These numbers surprised me; maybe resignings of P.Williams and others are immediately hitting 2008?http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writ...9/week14/4.html

Thanks Big Jim...that is where I read it. The good news is that they have 49 players under contract, and none of their "impact" players are FAs so they should be able to shore things up with one or two guys if they choose to do it that way.
