2007 Minnesota Vikings In-Season Thread (1 Viewer)

I don't think anyone is crowning them anything other than a possible 3rd stringer... just yet

But you do come off a little bitter that your 3 win Total prediction didn't work out. ;)

even if they win out for a UNBELIEVABLE 10-6 record  I still think they will have a hard time with GB in GB, or Dallas in Dallas.

But, if they continue to develop and go after some good FA and have a good draft, the door is WIDE open for next year.
I've always said that. I knew they had a great 2007 draft.

I want to see them play a real NFL team. Unfortunately, they don't play one this week either.

Beating the Raiders, Giants (when Eli literally GAVE them the game), and a truly horrendous Lions team does not impress me much.

I will grant that they did crush the last two. But the jury's still out for me.
Yea, because the Vikings defense had nothing to do with that. Not trying to pile on you Andy.

But I hate it when "Fans" say.. Well, they won.. but :goodposting: it was only because so and so gave it to them.

The defense played a great game and were rewarded for it.
Well, I felt like Eli handed that game to them as well. It's tough to win with that many picks, especially when they are returned for TDs. I do think the D is playing well but Eli completely gave the game away.On another note, I caught a bit on NFL Network last night where Dukes and Woodson were asked whom they would pick for coach of the year if the season ended now. Woodson picked McCarthy and Dukes picked CHILDRESS!!! I liked Childress initially but was down on him midway through this season. I guess he gets another year to get this thing turned around. It doesn't hurt that he has ADP's coat tails to cling on to either.

Good article...the two bolded parts only add to the reason as to why Matt Birk is my favorite NFL player!

If the 2005 season was one of contentment for Bryant McKinnie, then the 2006 season was one of constant adjustment for the Vikings left tackle.

McKinnie had played nearly three consecutive seasons with veteran guard Chris Liwienski, and he had learned Mike Tice's blocking scheme.

Then everything changed.

Vikings coach Brad Childress installed the West Coast offense and implemented a scheme that stresses angles more and mixes in zone, gap and man blocking.

"It was like, 'Oh, well, everything you learned, throw it out the window,' " McKinnie said. "I was like, 'Man, I just got comfortable. Now I got to start over.' "

The makeup of the offensive line was overhauled, with center Matt Birk coming back from injury, all-pro left guard Steve Hutchinson signing a lucrative seven-year contract and veteran Artis Hicks joining the team via a trade.

"Nobody was familiar with anybody," McKinnie said. "Me and Hutch didn't know each other. We were both learning an offense we weren't used to, so everyone was unsure."

Tice wanted his linemen to push defenders straight back; Childress wanted his linemen to sometimes angle defenders in a certain direction, based on a particular play. The Vikings looked dominant at times last season (175 rushing yards in Seattle, 190 in Chicago), but they also looked inadequate at times (45 against New England, 62 against the New York Jets).

This season, the Vikings have topped 100 rushing yards in all but one game (at Green Bay)

and 120 yards in 10 games. The production has been steady, with explosive performances coming against Chicago (311) and San Diego (378). The pass protection also has improved.

"We didn't play that well against Green Bay," Birk said. "But, certainly, we have played better the last couple of weeks.

"That's what you're striving for: to keep getting better."

McKinnie, Hutchinson and Birk have played alongside one another in every game since Childress took over last year, and Ryan Cook is starting to feel less like a center and more like a tackle. A second-round draft pick out of New Mexico, where he exclusively played center, Cook said he felt a "little awkward" when he played center for three snaps Sunday in the rout of the Detroit Lions.

The Vikings also improved at right guard by replacing Hicks with the more athletic Anthony Herrera, who admittedly "tried to make too much happen" in the past.

"He's got a lot of natural gifts to him," offensive line coach Pat Morris said of Herrera. "He's enthusiastic and strong.

"He's fit in well."

McKinnie said Herrera adds something else to the line mix: energy.

"He talks a lot of trash out there," McKinnie said. "I know I'm not a person who talks (trash), but I kind of feed off that, and it gets me into the game. It actually gets me excited. I like that part of him."

As for the accelerated cohesion of Cook and Herrera, that can be attributed to their friendship, both said. The two hang out together, even away from Winter Park. Sometimes, one will bring up a play from the next game.

"Maybe we'll talk about a certain look," Herrera said, "or maybe he remembers something, and he reminds me, or I remind him.

"That way (on Sunday) we don't look at each other like, 'Well, what's going on?' We look at each other like, 'Here it comes.' "

The entire line also gets together Friday mornings to eat breakfast and watch film, sans coaches.

Birk or Hutchinson, the two most senior linemen, usually handle the clicker.

"Without coaches," Birk said, "we can really slow it down and say, 'Hey, what are you thinking here?' "

Asked who handles it most between him and Hutchinson, Birk said, "Whoever is not eating an Egg McMuffin at the time."

The offensive linemen are proud they pave the way for the league's top run offense, although they are far from content.

"We definitely take pride in it, but it does help that we have Adrian (Peterson) and Chester (Taylor) back there, who have such big-play potential," Cook said. "But it's not so much where you are during the season, it's where you are at the end of the season. We just want to keep doing our assignments and get those guys as many yards as possible."

Peterson is at 1,197 yards and remains the leading vote getter for the Pro Bowl. On Wednesday - as he has throughout the season - Peterson praised the blocking of his linemen.

"They definitely have molded during the season, each week just really improving and capitalizing on different mistakes from previous games and trying to put those behind us," Peterson said. "I would say everybody is clicking a lot better."

Peterson has said several times he planned to reward his linemen with a special gift.

"Let's just hope he's a man of his word," Birk quipped. "I get tired of making him look so good."

I thought this was an interesting read regarding McKinnie and his uneven performance. Maybe he's just a slow learner? He's certainly been playing better the past month.

niners sold out to shut down our #1 weapon, but still didnt come close to beating us.

4 in a row, Chicago next monday!!!!

#6 spot is ours all alone.

If anyone would have mentioned the word "Playoffs" 4 weeks ago you would have been called a :lmao: :loco: ;)
and IMO they're the one team that no one will want to face. Great O-line/D-line, great running game, improving passing game and their achilles heel, pass defense, has been much better of late.

It's nice to see them in the playoff hunt. Out of WAS/ARI/DET (and maybe NO depending on tonight's game) they definitely seem to have the most upside for holding the spot, but I'd be worried about them vs. SEA in the wild card game if it works out that way.

Anybody think they should take a chance on JP Losman as a backup to Jackson for next year? Their playing styles are similar.

I'd say there is a very good chance that the game in two weeks vs. Washington gets moved to Sunday night. If you look at the schedule for that week who else are they going to want to play that night.

Right now it is scheduled as TB/SF. :lmao: .. If Washington were to pull an upset this week vs. The Giants, and the Vikings win vs. the Bears, than the Redskins would be 1 game behind the Vikes for the last playoff spot.

Maybe N.Y. Giants at Buffalo? If Buffalo beats Cleveland this week they're in a similar situation as the Vikes I think. Plus the networks seem to love the NYG. I hope you're right though.

It has been officially moved to Sunday night (WAS@MIN)...saw it on Yahoo (too lazy to leave a link).

Funny what winning will do.

A month ago people couldn't give away tickets to home games on craigslist.

Now they are going for above face value for the Bears and Redskin games.

last two viking home games this year will be nationally televised!!!im excited!!!!!AD two big games, and 2 wins is what im asking santa!

If Dwight Smith doesn't play this week...who starts at safety? Sounds like Doss and Tank are both injured. Would they start Frampton?? Scares me a bit.

How can you be so stupid as a (relatively) high profile person to smoke marijuana in downtown Minneapolis? Stay at home!!

Has there been any further word on Peterson this week. He said he admitted tweeking his knee during last week's game. The didn't practice on Wednesday. Its a Monday night game. I am looking for some news on his status during practice this week...

I've heard nothing of this.

Man I would love it if they could somehow get Kenny Phillips or Reggie Smith in the draft. I'm so tired of Dwight Smith.

looks like doss is a go, but i expect smith to play, but not start.

Well the Cards didnt do us any favors today.

We need to get this win tonight!!!!!!!!!

Lets go VIKES, MONDAY NIGHT BABY!!!!!!!!!!!

1st national game for AD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets show the nation we are for real!!!!!!!!!!

:lmao: Already more wins than 90% of Vikings fan thought they would have

 ADP is all of that and more

 TJ has been consistent and not turned the ball over the last 4 weeks

 Defense has been stopping the run and putting pressure on the opposing QB's

 Facing Kyle Orton :banned:

 Both The Saints and Washington winning puts added pressure on the Vikes to win tonight. I guess in a way that is a good thing to make them prepare even harder.

 This is the Bears "championship" and they'd love nothing more than to serve up humble pie to the vikes while keeping their very slim playoff hopes alive.

In a normal season I'd have no fingernails left right now and be nervous as hell.

Seeing as they have already exceeded the expectations of most I am looking forward to enjoying the game tonight.

:lmao:

STOP ALL THE POSITIVITY !!!!!!!Seriously, it's nice to see some you come around.
 :hifive: That being said I am still a bit skeptical of Childress and Jackson. The overall plan is working however and its great to see these young players growing. The Vikings still need to improve their pass defense to get past being average. But at least they have worked back to average again. When purple Jesus walks over defenses I dont think the Vikings are a team that anyone wants to deal with in the playoffs. Its awesome to have playoff like excitement for the last few weeks of the season.A coworker of mine (cowboy fan) was razzing me about the Vikings today. He said that the Vikings are like a guy who goes to the prom every year but only gets his rubber on. Never taking the last step. A place holder in the playoffs (which the Vikings have made the playoffs more often than not) that can never take the last step.It would be especially sweet if the Vikings can win these last few games, make the playoffs and eliminate the Cowgurls from the playoffs later. That may be too much to ask for. But since its Santa time I figured I might as well ask for what I want. One thing at a time though. Lets get some Bear skins.SKOL

Considering the sheer number of teams still in the hunt in the NFC, they're going to have teams nipping at their heels. The silver lining is that SEA and NYG looked *BAD* this weekend. A win tonight puts the Vikes within one game of moving up. Based on their remaining schedules, TB and SEA might win out...but assuming the Giants lose to the Pats in week 17, the tiebreaker could put them ahead of them as a #5 seed or better.

I don't think they can get any higher than the #5 seed. Don't the two division winners automatically get the 3rd and 4th seeds?

Somebody please tell me 3 picks, 3 sacks, a few fumbles and at least 2 defensive TD's are possible tonight against Orton. A shutout with 150 yards or less would be nice as well.

Yes, 5th is the best they could do.

Is Jackson really 7-0 as the starter this season? He looked pretty decent again....
7-2 I believe
7-2 game manager. Fall behind and it's over. Once the pack got up by 2 scores, there was no chance to win with Jackson. The Vikings will definately grab as much defense as they can in the 2008 draft. Mostly secondary help. it will be needed to have any chance of competing against the point scoring teams. Now if the grab Brohm or Ryan or maybe even Flacco, look out.

i don't remember tarvaris playing against the pack this year. can you refresh my memory?

From the Pioneer Press...

Vikings coach Brad Childress' job secure through 2008Moments after Brad Childress presided over a key victory, Vikings owner Zygi Wilf guaranteed his handpicked coach's job security through the 2008 season. After a disappointing 4-6 start, Childress was speculated to be on the hot seat, according to national Web sites, and he was bashed in Vikings forums by fans, including one who started a Fire Brad Childress Web site. But Wilf, who hasn't publicly commented on the Vikings in more than a month, dismissed any possibility of his coach being ousted after this season. Asked if Childress would return in 2008, regardless of how this season concludes, Wilf said, "Absolutely." "There was never a question," Wilf said. "You need time for a team to coalesce and to get together. This is the ultimate team sport, and everyone has to play their part, and it will take some time. And we're doing it, and everyone is stepping up." -- Pioneer Press
Yay.
 Now I'll have to look elsewhere for employment.
Can I be an honorary member of Viking Nation?I've always admired this team from afar... :wub:Back to the Mick Tinglehoff, Ron Yary, Chuck Forman, Paul Krause, Bobby Bryant, Fran Tarkenton days.:old guy:
Everyone is allowed two favorite teams - the hometown team and a team from the other conference.
So I've been breaking the rules all these years? :lmao: For 10+ years of my fandom, we didn't have a hometown team here in Phoenix (local telecasts pretty much deemed us cowpie fans by default tho). For the past 20 years, the Cardinals have been here, so I guess that counts as a hometown team. However, I resisted the local media and didn't drop my allegiance to root for the "home team". :thumbup:GB not rooting for the hometown team but instead for a team in the same conference! :banned: :D :oldskool: :weanedonTarkentonandfriends:

I really hope the Vikings get another shot at the Packers in the playoffs. After seeing Favre yesterday I think he's either still feeling the effects of his injury or his arm is wearing out. He threw several weak looking deep balls against the Rams. Even the deep TD to Jennings looked ugly but Jennings was completely wide open.

Bollinger played (horridly) in the 34-0 game. Sad to say I agree about falling behind though. If this team gets down 14 in any game they're in trouble.

No. Since your team was a relocated one, the team that you rooted for before they moved to your town can remain your favorite team. It's in the handbook.

Out of the two, I think Dallas is better primed for the upset than GB. At least they only have two guys that need to be covered in the secondary.I keep forgetting TB is a division winner.

Well last week was a good road test on whether these Vikings are any different than the past ones.

Beat the ones you are suppose to beat until they look like

Please don't :clyde: your fans tonight!

:bag: in advance.
