I figure if I make it through WK 5 i'm pretty solid.. :goodposting:

Seems like a lot of the same players are on most teams:

Here's what I figure are the most owned players.

QB: Brees, Romo, Schaub, Warner, Ryan

RB: T. Jones, Ricky Williams, Rice, Slaton

WR: Marshall, Cotchery, Steve Smith (CAR), Calvin Johnson, DeSean Jackson

TE: Keller, Fasano

K: Prater

I would guess Warner, Slaton, and Keller are at the very top of the list of the most owned players.

When do they post the most owned players? Interested to see.

The Turk (aka Doug Drinen) blesses us with summary stats as things go along. He loses a lot of sleep on this contest so I'll happily and patiently await his analysis  -QG

I have the bolded players.I don't know if that is good or bad. I guess if those guys pan out and are great values, you want to be a part of it, but then again, you need to differentiate enough.

I figure the top RB's, mid/lower WR's, top TE's and defenses are the places where this thing will be won/lost. I'm sure an injury or two will eliminate a lot of teams as well.

Lone try at this (did not re-enter team), with only a few personal rules in mind:

- No overlapping bye weeks within each position

- Up the "best ball" odds by having 3 QBs, TEs, Ks and TDs, especially during bye weeks

- Very high on MB3 this year

- Betting that Favre-to-Cotchery becomes a beautiful combo

- Betting that Jordan outplays Maroney

- Praying 10 RBs/WRs total is enough to choose from for 6 weekly scores (with likely 2 on byes in wks 4-10)

- Warner at $5 was too good to pass up

QB - Tony Romo - 23

I have most of these players, too, bolded above. It's hard to pass up the values. I rounded out my roster with Westbrook, Portis, Winslow, and the DTBC combo. Instead of Ryan, I used Orton, who has a different bye week than Warner and Brees. That's what will differentiate my team -- I'll be riding Orton all the way to the championship. With the 1.5 per TE reception, Winslow should be a stud in this format if he stays healthy.

Tripled up on QB, TE, and PK, but not D, since a D team can't miss a week because of injury. My WR depth is weak, but other than that, I like this team.

DOH!Dude, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your roster MUST add up to $250 to be eligible.
No
Each selection has a different cap value, but all teams must remain at or under the $250 cap. Note: Even though the software should show you if you are within the cap, it is your responsibility to ensure you have a team that is valued at $250 or less. Teams that have spent more than the $250 will be disqualified in week 1.
My bad. Sorry.I could have sworn I'd read that differently. Maybe just my old, tired eyes.

Sunday?? SUNDAY???
Hey! I said before Sunday.Anyway, here's a quickie:

As predicted, Warner, Slaton, Ray Rice, and Ricky Williams are the most owned players, but none of them are on as many rosters (percentage-wise) as Wes Welker (67%) was last year. I can't seem to put my hands on the numbers, but I recall Frank Gore and Ben Watson being on an absurd percentage of rosters in 06. Like 80%.

Warner 51% [i think David "$2" Garrard was about 55% last year]

Romo 27%

Slaton 57%

Ricky 49%

Rice 44%

Barber 24%

Cotchery 28%

Marshall 27%

Calvin Johson 22%

Keller 28%

Not too different than many, fewer rb, more wr.

I did go with both Witten and Winslow - i just felt at the price, they had the best, consistent opportunity to score well on both TE and Flex

Good to see I only have Romo, Slaton and Keller from this list, but thought about everyone of them and had them on my team at some point. To be honest I'm surprised that only 57% have slaton. I thought it would be closer to 75-80%.

This tells you what percentage of teams had the given number of players at each position. E.g. 13% of all entries had exactly 4 RBs. The rows add to 100, but don't necessarily appear to because of rounding.

It shows the minimum, the 20th, 40th, 60th, and 80th percentiles, and the maximum spent on each position. Looking at the QB line, for example, we see that everyone spent at least $5. 20% of all entries spent $28 or less. 40% of all entries spent $32 or less. And so on.

The Turk (aka Doug Drinen) blesses us with summary stats as things go along. He loses a lot of sleep on this contest so I'll happily and patiently await his analysis
Indeed. Rest assured that I love this thing just as much as you guys do. I even entered a team this year!!

I'll have various stats computed at some point before Sunday.
Sunday?? SUNDAY???

Keller 28%

Utecht 14%
SWEET! I have most those players. Maybe we can have a 300 way tie for first?
Two thoughts. First, has anyone determined the number of "exact duplicate teams" last year or the year before? I would expect a couple, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were no exact duplicates among the 12,000 or so different entries.Second, I've always assumed that you were at a distinct disadvantage if you didn't have most or all of the apparent "super value players" like Slaton, Rice, Ricky, Warner, Keller, etc. But has anyone looked at the top-20 teams last year to determine if this were true? Maybe the group of "super value players" is irrelevant and trumped by having the best subgroup of players that have really big years and peak at the right time (whether or not you have any of the super value players). Alternatively, maybe having the super value players helps you to survive through Week 13, but is less relevant in Weeks 14-16.

I just checked. There are no duplicates. With 22 roster slots, I would be stunned if there were duplicate entries.[Now the playoff contest, that's a different story. Tons of dupes there.]

Interesting breakdown in distribution of players selected..... maybe it comes down to which "stud" does not bust to differentiate the winners combined with the "value" picks who are selected less frequently.

I'm actually stunned at the apparent diversity that we look to have this year. In years past, I could count on most, if not all of my players being on a huge percentage of rosters (with the exception of my stud TE I always pick). This year I have again picked basically the most popular players at each position, but the numbers are much lower based on my beverage-compromised memory. The nice thing is, that even with a roster full of the most popular picks, not many folks have them all in combination, so I still can get some score separation. I also get some separation with my feature TE being very unpopular.

The other nice benefit of having a full slate of popular players is that if they do poorly, the contest participants in general do poorly. Not that it is a bullet proof strategy, but last year I don't think I came anywhere near the cut line except for maybe the final 50% cut. We'll see what this year brings! My week 10 bye situation is already scaring me, even though I tried to protect with depth. Having Romo/Portis/S Moss all off together is a bit unnerving. Liked each of them too much to change them out...

Thanks a lot for the quick response, as always. With no duplicates, it raises the question of how much similarity there really is among the 12,000 or so different entries. Last year, it seemed like there was a fair amount of similarity among teams -- just from visually looking at a bunch of different high-scoring teams (which is probably heavily biased in itself). It looks like there's less similarity this year than last year from the above stats. But some players are on more than 50% of teams, and a significant number of players are on more than 20% of all teams. Injuries to stud players also have a big impact in making teams non-competitive. I don't know -- I suspect that there's less similarity across all teams than would be expected, but depending on which players have great years, the high-scoring teams will again look pretty similar.I guess it's another version of the luck vs. skill argument. I think I'd argue that it takes more skill than luck to survive for the first 13 weeks. Weeks 14-16 and the eventual winners, I don't know if luck plays a bigger role or not.

Quite possibly the greatest team ever assembled!

QB - Tony Romo - 23

QB - Kurt Warner - 5

QB - Kyle Orton - 4

Gotta go with 3 QB's. Romo will carry and Orton will take the bears to the playoffs. Warner will just fill in with the occasional 400 YD 4 TD performance.

RB - Michael Turner - 28

RB - Willie Parker - 23

RB - DeAngelo Williams - 15

RB - Ricky Williams - 8

RB - Steve Slaton - 1

Turner is the MAN here! Carry me big boy! FWP is a sleeper this year and DWill will come out on top in that RB battle in CAR. RW and Slaton for value.

WR - Brandon Marshall - 23

WR - Jerricho Cotchery - 23

WR - Ted Ginn - 13

WR - Mark Clayton - 9

WR - Kevin Walter - 6

WR - DeSean Jackson - 4

Nothing spectacular here. Just lots of targets.

TE - Jason Witten - 31

TE - Tony Scheffler - 16

TE - Anthony Fasano - 3

Here in lies the butter. Witten=monster. Scheffler=perfect flex w 1.5 ppr. I just like saying FasAAAHHno!

PK - Stephen Gostkowski - 5

PK - Jason Hanson - 1

TD - Philadelphia Eagles - 3

TD - Cleveland Browns - 3

TD - Miami Dolphins - 1

Taking a different route here. Going with the return TD possibilities. Desean, Cribbs and Ginn. Just need one per week.

Total value: 248

Good luck to all!

To improve my odds I slept at a Holiday Inn before making my picks.

When I win, I plan to fly to some tropical 3rd world country, where I'll use the money to open my own personal brothel. I will live off of bananas and coconuts, except for one coconut which I will paint a smiley face on and name Wilson.

I am good!

The Turk (aka Doug Drinen) blesses us with summary stats as things go along. He loses a lot of sleep on this contest so I'll happily and patiently await his analysis :hot:
Indeed. Rest assured that I love this thing just as much as you guys do. I even entered a team this year!!

I'll have various stats computed at some point before Sunday.
Dont tell me this is the first year youve entered a team?

This tells you what percentage of teams had the given number of players at each position. E.g. 13% of all entries had exactly 4 RBs. The rows add to 100, but don't necessarily appear to because of rounding.

Code:

Someone took 7 PKs :hophead: Ahhh, Doug, could you give us the owners name on this entry? The entertainment value would be priceless :goodposting:

I get a kick out of all the bright responses we get from people who finished out of the money last year. The only guy that I want to give criticism is the guy that won last year. He has been there and done that. I finished at 28th place and won a few bucks. This is one of most fun contests that you can enter because it fills the void until the games start. Once the games start then your leagues take precedence.

The other thing I can't figure out is why so many people feel the need to publish their teams. For the life of me I have no idea why anyone would want to do that. After all we can check any team we want by clicking on the owners name.

Good luck to all.

This is a brief look at how people allocated their dollars. It shows the minimum, the 20th, 40th, 60th, and 80th percentiles, and the maximum spent on each position. Looking at the QB line, for example, we see that everyone spent at least $5. 20% of all entries spent $28 or less. 40% of all entries spent $32 or less. And so on.

someone spent $218 on QB? 51 on pk is :tfp: too.and why in the world would you need 6 Defenses? Injury risk?

Bobcat: why three kickers?
I did it last year and I thought it helped me earn a few extra each week. I don't think I missed out on another $1 player this year that I felt provided more chance to score for me than a kicker (maybe a defense, but those $1 defenses are really a crapshoot this year). Besides Slaton, I didn't see another RB/WR worth $1.Looking back at last year, each kicker factored into my lineup 4 times, never scoring below 10pts (I was eliminated in week 12):Longwell $1 - Put up 15pts when the other two combined for 1pt. Also factored into other weeks with 14/11/13pts when my other kickers were below 8pts.Bironas $1 - Put up that monster 32pt week when my other two combined for 2pts. He also bumped me 7pts (basically a TD) in another week.Kasay $1 - While he factored in four times, never for more than a 5pt gain, but that could be the difference in making the cut line once. What do you think?
Interesting. Guess I didn't realized kickers could be so helpful.

I am a defending finalist. As most of you I got the big values thru out as identified above. Why I will win is because I worked in Whitten and Zach Miller as my TE'S.

:lmao:As suspected, the three most owned RBs...
I feel like I am the only guy on this board not putting Ray Rice in the Pro Bowl this year. I didn't even consider him.
That makes two of us. At least I don't feel like the Lone Ranger anymore...
It's not we think he will be pro bowl. It's value vs opportunity. McGahee wasn't even jogging a week ago. He sure won't be busting thru a weak offensive line anytime soon. Rice will score for us some weeks early I bet. And might just end up Rookie of the year based on his opportunity outlook. Anyone thinks McGahee will be effective soon is kidding themselves.
