2008 MLB Trade Deadline Thread (1 Viewer)

As a Braves fan I'm very interested in the deadline and what the Braves can get for Tex and Ohman. Maybe throw Kotsay/Infante/Norton in that mix, but doubt many people are after them.

mlbtraderumors says the suitors for Tex are Dbacks, Rays, Red Sox and Angels. Braves want a young 1B, but it seems the those teams don't want to trade their guys, except maybe Chad Tracy...

Also, will Manny get traded?

They're going to have to eat it a little bit with Teix. They should still get a good return, but they waited a bit too long. They can't re-sign him and aren't going anywhere. Should have been pushing the pedal harder.

Do you think the Rays are real suitors for Tex or even Ohman? and what guys would yall give up?

I doubt it. They don't see interested in rentals for their top-shelf prospects.I could see them giving up Niemann for Teix, but that's about it.They are definitely interested in Ohman, no idea what the asking price is.

 Pretty aggravated with Cox & Wren for not being realistic about their chances weeks ago.

Looks like the Dbacks and Angels are the two main players for Tex... Dbacks don't want to include Connor Jackson, instead using Chad Tracy, while I've read Kotchman could be had... the Braves might be looking for a starter instead with Hudson possibly needing Tommy John surgery

As a Twins fan I hear

Were trying to buy Hawkins from the Yankees (should be cheap)

Were trying to sell a shortstop Everett or Harris to the Dodgers (another cheap deal) unsure what we get in return on this deal.

Prevailing thought on the Tex front is Tracy + Owings + B-level prospect for Tex. Not particularly pleased with this offering. But the wildcard here is LA. No question the Braves would love to get Loney and Kemp would be a nice addition too but for a pretty steep price. Probably have to throw in Ohman and a position player too like Kelly Johnson. Though a pipe dream, I'd be estatic if Wren could pull this off.

Of course the Yanks and Sox are always players. Kennedy would have to be the centerpiece of a potential deal, and as for the Sox, its a bit more complicated. They're looking for an SS, so a potential trade of Escobar + Tex would have to net some significant players. No doubt Youk would be a part, but probably Buchholz and Masterson too.

Just some things I've been hearing.

Tracy + Owings + b level is a pretty weak deal. Tracy is nothing special, Owings is back end at best.

Dodgers are dumb if they give up Loney and Kemp to rent Teixeira.

Rays really need to get into that mix because they have the organizational depth to give up with the richest farm in baseball.

Agree on all fronts. As a Braves fan, nothing would make me happier (except for Loney, Kemp) than swinging a deal with the Rays. Not sure what we would be recieving, but they have such a stockade of talent that should be given a hard look at.

I heard rumor of a 3 way deal: Manny to LAD, Kemp or Eithier & or other prospects to ATL, Tex to Bos
I wouldn't mind that as a Braves fan.... the Braves will need bats at 1B, LF, CF and RF next year, so they have flexibility to trade for several different options.

This is stupid. Why would Boston do this? Zero sense with Youk/Lowell tying up the corner and Ortiz as the DH Who plays left? Moss? Ellsbury? PROBABILITY: 0%

ESPN is saying the Angels have acquired Mark Teixeira from the Braves.

Jayson Stark isn't calling it official, but he believes the Angels are sending Casey Kotchman and a lesser player to the Braves for Teixeira. ESPN has the deal as done on its ticker.

Kotchman and Stephen Marek for TexSolid deal Wren  We have Kotch till 2011. Marek is a nice reliever, 11k/9 in AA ball. Halo's #6 prospect according to BA

if they weren't already, i gotta think this makes the angels the favorite to win it all. maybe by a wide margin.nice haul for the braves too. kotch is a nice guy to get for a guy they were about to lose anyway.

Braves got back a quality ML 1Bman and a good young reliever which is probably more than they would have gotten if they let Teix go via FA. Great move for the Angels, good move for the Braves IMO.

 Very nice deal for the Braves here. They get a guy who has proved he can hit in the majors, and is still improving, IMO. And a pretty nice prospect as well. Teixiera is going to put up ridiculous numbers the rest of the way with Anaheim. I really hope the Red Sox make a push to sign him next year.

Now the focus is on Ohman. If the offerings are underwhelming, I'd think about packaging him with Lillibridge to net a solid OF/SP prospect.

Wren has really showed some finesse in his dealings, and I am very plesantly surprised. If he gets a good return for Ohman, that would just be the icing on the cake.

Considering no one wanted TEixeira I'm not sure why the critics are all over the Braves here. They got what they could and felt they were getting more back than they would have gotten in compensation via the draft. I agree with the Braves management. Not many ML ready 1Bman in the draft. :lmao:

:goodposting: Especially since the Braves love to go after high-school players and give them time to develop. Kotchman is one hell of a get by the Braves. Especially for a two month rental player commanding a massive salary. Don't see the hate either, though I would have liked to see us get an OF or SP. We still have some trades left, IMO, so there's still a chance. To imagine the Halos were offering Kotchman and Ervin Santana for LaRoche two years ago. Dammit. Now that is a deal.

Angels are the ones that gave too much not the Braves. Giving up Kotchman for a rental is a lot and if this prospect is decent, they overpaid.

Hard to see the Angels not winning the AL this year. It really is.
Its still hard to see. Ervin Santana, Jered Weaver, Joe Saunders, October is a different ballgame and these guys have never proved themselves in the playoffs. The Angels have been very good recently in the regular season before and I've fallen for it, only to come up short in the playoffs. Yeah, I know they have a ring but that was a while ago and this pitching staff is still unproven.

Surprised no one is going after Aubrey Huff since's he's been en fuego for all of July...

4-5 tonight with a HR and a double and 4 Ribbies

According to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates are deep into talks with the Rays and other teams about left fielder Jason Bay. However, no "truly elite prospect" has been offered yet, and the chances are better than 50-50 that Bay stays. And who would move to right field for the Rays - Bay or Carl Crawford? The Braves are considered out of the mix.

Shortstop Jack Wilson seems likely to stay, while reliever John Grabow will probably be dealt.

Per mlbtraderumors.com (a site that I assume most everyone else is reading) the Rays are looking at Phils part-time OF Jayson Werth. As a Phils supporter (they are may national league team and am a partial game plan ticket holder) unless the Phils are getting something good.....I don't want to see him go.

Sounds like Bay to Tampa Bay is likely to get done tonight or tomorrow.
Good fit, I think. Bay probably will enjoy the change of scenery and see a nice performance spike. Going from a crap organization to an organization fighting with the Red Sox and Yankees for the NL East probably would energize most people.

I am seeing a lot of chatter about Manny, anyone hear something concrete? He signed papers to waive his no trade, seems like something imminent is about to happen with him.

:wolf:

Pirates :lmao: checking in:

The latest word on the street for the "Bay Watch" are:

Tampa Bay

St. Louis

**MYSTERY THIRD TEAM**

Not sure who the mystery is, but thats what I hear.

A good place to check out the bucco rumors is via the Post Gazette PBC Blog.

Also -- Most likely Pirate to go is John Grabow LHP Reliever. I think he's overrated so I would definitely like to see some starting pitching depth in return for Grabow's services.

From Rotoworld-

Sources told Baseball Prospectus' John Perrotto that Manny Ramirez is on the verge of being traded to the Marlins for three players.Perrotto says one of them is top outfield prospect Mike Stanton. Baseball Prospectus isn't the best source for breaking news, but Perrotto is a veteran reporter for the Beaver County Times and is pretty trustworthy. Still, it's worth noting that Ramirez is still in the game for the Red Sox.
I am hoping for Hermida, Stanton and ?. Would be disappointed if it is Willingham. Will be interesting to see if this happens. Noone wants to lose Manny's bat but I think his relationship with the teams has reached the boiling point. They have allowed it the past few years and it has worked out but from everything that is being said his antics seems to be hurting the team this time rather than being harmless. Pointless in keeping someone around if he doesn't want to play for us anymore. If the Sox hold him hostage then it will get worse.

As a Yanks fan....I would be on the ceiling if the Sox trade ManRam. There is noone that they could get that would give them what Manny gives.

As a Sox fan I totally agree but unlike the last few years when Manny would say he wanted to leave and such it was more of a rouse than anything else. He would change his mind two weeks later and be fine. This year he has had some incidents and from what I have been reading in local media his act is wear thin on his teammmates and management and he doesn't want to be here anymore. If he truly doesn't want to be here than it is not beneficial to the team to keep him. He won't be as motivated and his attitude will be a distraction in the lockerroom. There is no way we keep him after this year anyways, his contract is up and we have 2 options but from the look of it, if we do keep him I don't see us exercising those options. I don't think you can get complete value for a guy like Manny but it seems a trade needs to happen.

It looks like the 3rd prospect involved is pitcher Ryan Tucker. So Herminda, Mike Stanton and Ryan Tucker.

If it happens, we could have done much worse for him. That is a decent return.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have talked to the Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins about a potential blockbuster three-way trade, multiple baseball sources said Wednesday night.

The Pirates would get outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins and send left fielder Jason Bay to the Red Sox while Boston would send left fielder Manny Ramirez to Florida. There would be other players involved in the trade as well, though it is unclear who they would be.

As reported by MLB.com's Joe Frisaro earlier this evening, the Pirates, Red Sox and Marlins appear to be moving closer to making a blockbuster trade that would send Jason Bay to Boston, Jeremy Hermida to Pittsburgh and Manny Ramirez to Florida.Multiple baseball sources have confirmed that the three teams remain in dialogue, and according to a report by the Beaver County Times' John Perrotto, a deal could be done as early as this evening. There is also confirmation that other players would also be involved in such a deal -- that could include the Pirates receiving a Minor Leaguer from the Red Sox farm system.
Posted by Buster OlneyAs the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates discuss a possible three-way deal for Manny Ramirez, the sides are also discussing lefty reliever John Grabow moving from Pittsburgh to the Red Sox. The current sticking point, according to a well-placed source, is that the Marlins want the Red Sox to add a prospect to their take in the deal.

Really? who do u think yall give up? Gonna sign him long-term?
Rumor is the Rays are offering Niemann and Brignac, which is a really good offer, imo. Both of those guys are top-3 prospects for most teams. Pirates want Hellickson instead of Niemann, which they're not going to get.

The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-5 rights and no trade clause and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

So here’s what Pee Wee Herman would call the “big but.” The teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It’s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There’s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)

Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)

Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

There is still potential for this to fall apart over the prospects, though things appear closer now than ever before.

Jayson Stark saying the Cards have had discssions with a few teams about moving Kyle Lohse. Makes some sense, with the team unlikely to be able to re-sign him, the need for relief help, and LaRussa wanting a bat. Not sure who they're going to find as buyers, though.
