2008- the Year Fantasy Football Died? (1 Viewer)

Uhm...how is Reggie Wayne a bust?? 350 yards and 3 TDs in 4 games is pretty much the definition of a stud WR. What more do you want?If you are a true shark, you will learn to adapt to these trends. If not, you get left behind, feel frustrated, and make comments that 2008 is the year Fantasy Football died
 Top 5 in PPG in my league. :lmao:

Like many, I have been playing for years. I have made a concerted effort to limit the leagues I'm on to not get overcommitted.

Having said that, I think this is my fantasy football swan song.

Here are the problems with Fantasy Football 2008

1) Where are the studs?

Sure we are only 5 weeks in... but Tom Brady- out. Peyton manning- semibust. Tomlinson- bust. All Day- semibust. Stephen Jackson- bust. Randy Moss- semibust. Reggie Wayne- bust. Addai- semibust. Marshawn- semibust.

I cannot remember a year when so many preseason top picks were busts. Of FBG's presseason top 12- only 3.. Portis, Gore, and MBIII are performing. Consensuus picks 1-7 are all disappointing or busts (albeit some due to injury)

2) RBBC-

I remember the good old days when a RB would get 20-25 carries a game. Not anymore. Sure, we have to adapt.. but it is annoying that a backup RB gets the TDs or worse yet gets 1/2 the carries.. it makes an unpredictable game even less predictable. For example, who would have thought that Felix Jones would get so many carries? And then when people count on him, he gets 0 carries in week 4. How many RBs are not in RBBC? Very few. Of those, how many are perfroming as RB1 in fantasy football? Even less..

3) Rookies- Too many rookies are now doing well. Forte, Chris Johnson, McFadden, Stewart, Desean Jackson, Felix Jones, Royal.. THey may not keep it up.. But it stinks because rookies are less reliable but now more featured than ever.

What does everyone think? Is Fantasy Football a dying sport? If not, give me new reasons to love it!!!
If you had my team, you wouldn't be posting this. I am totally dominating via excellent drafting. Studs. Yep, got 'em. Ya gotta adapt. I am 4 wide and let it fly. Gore pounds the rock some.2008: maybe the year the weak ### clueless FF owners get totally exposed. Just picking AP or LT doesn't work anymore. You have to have drafting and scouting skills. Thus I say 2008 is the beginning of winning via skill and not just dumb luck.

I guess if you were fortunate enough to grab one of the 3 [MBIII, Gore, Portis] you mentioned in the first round and backed it up pretty good during the rest of your draft, you're probably in pretty good shape in your league. It just goes to show, luck has more to do with this game than anything.
what if you grabbed two of 'em at the 1.10/2.01 turn - backed it up with Big Ben, Boldin, Forte, Bowe and RoyW - and you are STILL 2-3sometimes the dead shark carcass gets picked clean by the living guppies

14. McGahee, Willis BAL ??

I'm always competitive.... but when you play the top scoring team in your league every week (or what seems like every week) it can get a bit frustrating.

2 - 3 so far this year, but still have a powerful team and there is a long way to go.

Tomlinson was "OK"???

Parity has hit FF.It used to be the guys with the top 5 picks were locks for huge years. Not so anymore. The stud RB theory is out the window as well. The last two years in my main league I have went with the stud WR theory. And picked off RBs in the 3rd and 4th.I thought people want CHANGE??
It is the year of the place kicker

This day and age...there is too much FF data out there for every newbie or experienced veteran to latch onto. Therefore everyone has nearly the same drafting mindset and luck prevails more than ever. Years ago, with limited info. and marketing to the FF community, you truly could outsmart many other owners. Oversaturation of cheatsheets, stats, websites etc...getting everyone into the same mindsets may be starting to have a negative impact on the FF game (when you are a competitive person and really trying want knowledge and skill to equate to wins. I truly feel that luck plays more into the modern FF game than say a decade ago. Perhaps it will go into a waining period. I expect further evolution of the game though. I quit playing re-draft and only play dynasty for the last couple of years. Tons of luck in dynasty as well but I find it more challenging and interesting of a format than re-draft (just got bored with in after 10 years). I'm looking for an opening in a salary cap/contract league. That really should be interesting (but you've got to like number crunching stuff).

It's all out there. It's just gotten away from buying a $10 magazine and winning championships. Sorry if it's too much work for you. If you don't like it, go join a bowling league or something.
WARNING! ... Never mix bowling and fantasy football!!!I tried to draft my online team DURING a tournament on a Sunday in August, and although the team is 4-1 right now, I lost focus and now I have 9 players on a 15-man roster with a Bye Week in Week 8, including both QBs (Cutler, Rodgers).I'm just going to take the loss in week 8 and bounce back!Fortunately I won a couple hundred dollars in the bowling tournament, so losing the FF league won't be as painful!Research is VERY difficult while bowling! :lmao:

1) OK. Reggie Wayne isnt a bust.. so sorry to state that,, that isnt the main point here

2) My point is this year is not about homework . Who sat at home and said.. oh with the 3rd pick I want Barber or Gore or with my 2nd QB i want Cutler or Rodgers... Who said I want all rookie RBs this year because SJax, LT, Peterson, Addai, and Lynch all wont produce consistently?

The homework is identifying the Antonio Gates before he breaks out... the Witten before he exploded last year, etc...

3) I am 3-2, have made the playoffs 2 of the prior 3 years (with one championship) in a league of veterans. I am I mad I am not 5-0. sure. But, my whining is not because I am 0-5. I am 3-2. Sure I have players who are underproducing and some overproducing,

4) My point here is fantasy football is fundamentally different than in any year prior. It seems less fun.. It seems that homework matters less and luck matters more. As someone said.. there is more parity in the NFL=more parity in fantasy football= more randomness to the outcome

REALLY :homer: I totally agree with this. I only started playing ten years ago but there was still a lot of information back then. I know that I wasnt reading a bunch of articles and cheat sheets back then and it was purely what I knew and saw. I could only imagine how it was back when the internet community wasnt as prevalent. Now everyone who plays has practically the same prerankings and when things dont go as planned, more and more people blame it on luck. Outside of injuries, I dont believe that is so. What would be interesting is to play in a league where everyone promises not to use any fantasy sites or rankings. I guarantee you would not see the same kind of drafting.

Portis: 16ppgMB3: 15.6ppg

Jackson: 13.5ppg

That's the difference between "bust" and "performing"?

And this is my exact point that I addressed above. If everyone didnt have the sheep mentality and bought into the multiple cheatsheets and prerankings then those players who are producing and the ones who are not would not be such a shock.Barber is playing in one of the best lines in the NFL and the RB who was splitting carries with him booked it. Gore has always been pretty studly and with the passing game opening up running lanes he was only going to get better. Cutler has been touted to being the next thing and showed it at the end of last year. Rodgers was taking over for a QB who put up great numbers last year and the years before was considered washed up, why couldnt he pick up where he left off. The rookie RBs are all in excellent situations. SJax has been playing in a terrible offense, LT is a year older and getting up there, Peterson...dunno what to say about that one but having Childress as a coach cant help, Addai is playing well, and Lynch is so-so.
