2009 Tampa Bay Rays thread (1 Viewer)

From Olney on ESPN:

Wade Davis of the Rays was the most impressive young minor leaguer I saw this spring. He throws 95 mph, and one of the days I saw him, he was unhittable. And right now, all of the Rays' young players look pretty good."
Can't wait until he is called up.

Frankly...as a Rays fan...I want the FO to do whatever they can to keep the roster competitive financially. Sternberg is already talking about how difficult it is going to be NEXT year...with Upton, Garza, and some others being arb-eligible and some expensive options coming up (Pena). If they can ease Price in...while also saving some $$ down the road...they have to do it.This is MLB afterall.
That's kind of what I am saying. Financially, it is a smart move. Competitively, Price is ready. Just as Wieters is .

When the Cappy alias dies, a part of FBGs dies with it.
Well thanks, but I'm still here. Looks like the Rays plan to keep Isringhausen -- appears that the plan is to DL him for a few weeks, put him on the 40-man and wait for either an injury or an ineffective start. Basically the first time a guy gets hurt, Izzy is called up. Seems like it will be nice depth to have. Guys go down all the time, he's a nice arm to have around for when that happens.*And Bradford comes back in May, too.

He's ready, in the sense he could come up and put up a league average ERA. But what happens if he struggles? Do you send him down then? Do you really think that's best for the player's development? I think it would be far worse. Send him down, let him dominate a few weeks, then call him up when the situation arises. Also, whether you want to admit it or not, Hammel and Niemann both have value. You can't cut either one and you need to give yourself the time necessary to find a good trade. Why rush? Whoever starts will be fine for 6-8 starts.

Padres are hot on Niemann's trail, but the Rays are demanding low level, A-Grade talent. Pads are balking since they know the Rays have little leverage.

 Rays have plenty of leverage. Izzy is on the DL so there's room for both Hammel and Niemann.

According to the Post, Hammel "is a prime target for the Rockies because he's a big arm and young. But to get him, Colorado will have to make step up in a trade given interest from other teams

Nice rip by Matt Joyce. Kid looks like he could be a star with that swing.

Not sure what they're going to do when Upton is back next week, but I can't imagine running Gross out there over this kid.

:goodposting: What about when Perez gets healthy, or is that not happening for a while? On another note...0 or 3 in games in HD so far. Not happy about the move from Ion.

Nice start for the Rays taking 2 of 3 in Fenway. It's only one series but it was important for the Rays to get out of the gate well and show that they belong. Let's see if they can keep the ball rolling over the weekend.

So I've got tickets for next Thursday from StubHub vs ChiSox, anything I need to know about parking?
Where are you coming from...Tampa? I usually take the (5th Ave) last exit off of 275 before you get to the 3-way split in the interstate (you can see Trop on your left)...drive down to Central Ave...take a left...then park in any of the lots off to the right as you approach the Trop and 17th st. I usually parked right on the corner of 17th and Central during the playoffs....it was $20 then...probably $10 now. From there you are just a few blocks from Fergs for pre-game.

We've got a hotel room in Pinellas Park. I'll have the wife and kids with me.

Then drive up US 19 to Central Ave, take a left, and follow the above instructions. The further you park from 17th the cheaper...you can probably find a $5 lot a few blocks away.

So with BJ playing tonight, Joyce is sent down instead of Gross? I assume that has something to do with options...

Upton and Crawford vs. Posada is hardly fair. Maybe they should use the old little league rule where you have to wait for the ball to cross homeplate/the catcher before you can break for 2nd?

Boy, Garza was awesome last night. Too bad AJ was a little bit better, because he was slinging it. So far he's shut down the two main rivals, that's a great sign.

Nice to see BenZo get the start in RF. He's a better bat than Gross.

Been saying this for a while, but Wheeler is done. D-O-N-E. Done. His pitches have zero movement on them. They just sit there, like on a tee. I wouldn't be shocked if he's shown the door when Izzy is ready. Or DL'd, more likely.

This was my only major concern heading into the season...the bullpen. They will take a step back this year no doubt.

So....

Wheeler's "done"...according to Cappy (not arguing).

Percival has been done for close to a year.

Howell and Balfour are struggling.

Hammel is gone.

What's the next move? Sit back and hope this April is just like last April, and we turn it on in May?

The Rays bullpen isnt that good (IMO its about league average and nowhere near as good as last year). Thats really there only weakness.

What happened to the GREAT Matt Joyce you were spewing about?

It's too early to get nuts about this. I will say if Balfour and Howell don't perform to at least slightly above league-average this year, the Rays probably won't make the playoffs. I do think JP will be fine, but Grant I have doubts about.

Percy clearly doesn't have it any longer. This isn't a week-long off-the-cuff thing, he didn't have it after last June either. I think he will get the mystery DL treatment once they decide Izzy is ready to come back up. I'm not sure how good Izzy will be, but I would be willing to bet he's a touch better than Troy at this point.

I think they're going to hang tough with Wheeler, but I just don't see him getting many big outs.

Further, Bradford is off the DL next month. They'll make room for him. And eventually Price will be up...if there are no SP injuries, he likely will push Niemann to the pen. I wish they would convert Jeff.

Umm...he went to AAA. Like just about everybody knew would happen when Upton returned.I was spewing about him? I said he's going to be a really good player. He will be. But like most of their young players, they sent him back to the minors for more at-bats.

You're a weird dude, shady.

I just assumed he was the starting RF when they traded for him and so did you :hey:
A little too much analysis for a trade for a backup OF.
Don't worry, we all still have plenty of time to laugh at the impending Derek Lowe deal.Besides he's going to be the starting RF for the defending AL champs.

Nelson is pretty good and I think Howell is a great swingman (6th, 7th inning guy)

They sent Longoria to the minors last year as well. It's what they do. But, I'm sure you know this.

Looks like 3 straight nights that they wasted a really strong performance from their starters.

The good news is the SP (other than Niemann's first start) has been great.

The bad news is........the offense. I'll take my chances with that coming around though.

no #### sherlockguy is a beast

I don't know if it was a hangover from all the celebrating, or just lackluster play, but they got crushed during this homestand. Ugly, lifeless ball.

Zobrist with another homer, though. I'm sure Gross and Kapler will continue to get ABs over him.
