2009 Tampa Bay Rays thread (1 Viewer)

Middle of the way through, but it's not looking like their year. Too inconsistent. Win 7, lose 4; win 4, lose 3; win 3, lose 2. Rinse, repeat.

Maybe a win like last night...where they get out-played...will start the 'fortune' heading in the right direction.

matchups suck in this series. 2 junk-balling lefties and then the Doc. Hopefully Kazmir continues with his improvements tonight because I'm dreading watching another David Price start on Thursday. Tallet is the type of pitchers that will give the Rays fits with his delivery and his slop.

Yea...it looks like everyone has Los Syndrome all of a sudden. When is the last time Longo saw a fastball?

Longo is seeing fastballs, but their either in or very low. With the leg problem, he's not turning on much nor getting down on those low fastballs. He nearly hit one out the other way tonight though.

FYI...we will have FBG representation on the Trop field on Saturday night....I'll be handing out All Star jerseys to the coaching staff and 4 players at home plate, during a brief ceremony right after the national anthem.

What do I get if I wear a Black-Eyed Joe tee?

You get to give me and Cappy free tickets so we can come to a game together again. We suck at coordinating our schedules

So you two are the guys everyone is complaining about on the radio.I have access...if games are still open (Bos and NYY likely not)...

He just launched a 93 MPH fastball that was in. I see a little pep in his step.

Yea - people love to complain about us. I have to come over from Orlando so it's tough on weeknights and Cappy seems to be out macking on weekends

What's worse than losing two in a row at home to the hapless A's to end the first-half?

Carrying that losing streak into game one of a ten-game road trip that will likely decide the season...........and the opposing pitcher is Zach Grienke.

"Ouch"

On another note, I notice Wade Davis is getting nothing but 5/6 inning starts in Durham, with no major pitch counts. One can assume he's going to be up in August for the bullpen, no?

Grienke has been pushed back to later in the series. Bannister is going tonight.

Grienke v Kazmir tonight. I'm a little surprised Maddon put Kaz at #2 when he reset the rotation. I guess he wants to go R-L-R-L-R?

That's the best I've seen Kazmir look since his ALCS start vs Boston. Velocity was strong, location was strong, and he induced 14 groundball outs.

Bartlett batting 9th today. What does the poor guy have to do?
I think that was done so that the hot Upton could have someone on base to drive in and/or create hit/run opportunities. I wish the Rays would trade for catching help because the current duo is terribly unproductive but I just don't see a solution on the market unless they want to do something with Gregg Zaun or pry Jeff Clement away from the Mariners and have him as a backup. Hernandez is a good glove but just brutal at the plate. He's a complete mistake hitter.

When do we get Riggans back?

Congrats to you guys. As Yankee fan, you and Boston are the teams I worry most about for the WC/Division, I saw you losing against the royals all the 3 games and was disappointed to see you win all 3...this is why you guys are a concern.

Wins like that are nice, aren't they?

Good luck the rest of the way...although I can't say I am roorting for you.

Peace

looks like later this week. Maybe Navi optioned to AAA? Frankly, I'd rather keep Hernandez around because he's playing much better defense than Navarro right now and Riggans is not really a good glove either.

Knightro...thanks. Never thought I'd be so glad to see Shawn Riggans.

Last night's game was one of the quintisential Maddon "er on the side of aggression" losses. Tough one heading into 3 straight lefties.

I'm not sure that was Maddon. That was either Bartlett on his own ( I believe he has carte blance) or there was a missed sign. The fact Upton did not run tells me Upton missed the sign because it makes no sense for only one guy to run with 2 on as one of them will absolutely be safe.

What a freakn screwing.

These 'pros' clearly cannot be responsible for a $B industry. The game is too big for this. Instant replay...here we come...and I hope it emcompasses every play.

Ugly.

Promising road trip went to the dumpster quick. And Halladay tomorrow. Jesus H.

Yanks and Sox both have cupcakes this weekend. Hate to hit the panic button, but if Toronto dusts them, they may be out of the race, or very close to it. Those two teams are just too good to be dicking around like this in late July. 7 back with 70 to play against NY is not a situation you come back from.

So...what do you guys think of the idea of losing either Pena or Crawford?

I've heard the arguments for why Pena is more valuable or tougher to replace...I'm not getting it.

Nice win tonight. Both Boston and NY have cupcake central this weekend, so the Rays really need to get two out of Toronto. New York's cake homestand to start the second-half hasn't helped things.

I think Pena will be the one to go. Crawford's speed is harder to replace than Pena's power. They both are terrific defensive players.Rays have options in the IF for the next few years. None of these possibilities would surprise me:1B: Zobrist2B: Aki (re-sign him cheapish this off-season)SS: Bartlett1B: Aybar2B: ZobristSS: Bartlett1B: Zobrist2B: BrignacSS: BartlettPersonally I like that last one the best. I don't think Aybar's bat can carry 1B full-time.CC could go as well, with a Joyce-BJ-Jennings OF. But, Carl (and Evan) is sort of the face of the franchise. I would be surprised to see them deal him.

Both are entering the final years of their deals next year. I don't think Aybar is an everyday 1B because he doesn't hit for enough power and his defense is suspect there. Pena is not worth signing long-term because he's exactly the type of player who starts regressing rapidly in his 30's. The problem - the Rays have NOTHING in the organization that can take over at 1B so that player would have to come via trade or free agency (Jeff Clement, please). If the Rays do make a trade here, I think Crawford or Pena are as good as gone in the off-season to off-set the salary gained as well as the arbitration figures that would come out this off-season. Bartlett, Garza, Upton, and Howell all go to arbitration and if they do indeed deal for Victor Martinez, he goes to arbitration as well. If the Rays want the compensation for Martinez, they have to at least offer the arbitration.

Aybar's defense has to be better at first than second. He is an abomination there. I don't care how good his bat is, I don't ever want to see him there again. I think if the Rays deal Kaz, they can keep CC. I think they'll figure out a way to manipulate the salaries this off-season where they can keep the core. Stu really, really wants a ring.

Fell asleep after the fourth inning. :wall:Oh well, it was a damn good nap.
BTW, you need to use your DVR. It is the only way to watch baseball. I watch every pitch, but can cut a game in half the time. I don't start watching until the game is half over usually.
It's usually full with GF crap. Most nights she's watching that and I have the game on the other tv.
You have to work on that!I can't wish you luck in the next few games, but I hope neither team gets injured :)

Talking to some FO guys this morning...got a CC tidbit:

They were talking to Rich H in the hall. Friedman walked by. Rich yells out "Are we trading CC"? Friedman responds "No...I want to win now".

:wall:
