2010 CLOSERS Thread (1 Viewer)

Bal - Ohman out, Hernandez in (at least until Simon gets back....which may be very soon)

Orioles interim manager Juan Samuel told MLB.com on Thursday that RP David Hernandez will be his man in the ninth inning for a save situation. "The ideal guy for me, if we get to it, will be Hernandez," Samuel said. "Since he was put in the bullpen, he looks so comfortable in that role. I don't know if it's something that is going to be his situation throughout his career, but right now he has done a tremendous job, and we feel comfortable with him in that role." Hernandez picked up his first save on Thursday night against the Yankees.(Updated 06/10/2010).

33 K's, 31 BB's, Simon reportedly coming back on Monday. I'm desperate for closers, and I won't even pick this guy up.

Potential closers to target as we speak...

Perez CLE

Demel AZ

Meek PITTS

Storen WASH

League SEA

The Padres are now considering being buyers, so I wouldnt rush to get Gregerson. He has stud closer potential, but not this year.

Also, those who thought Simon and Axford were not worth being picked up should now being eating crow.

Not only are they closing games out, but are now not relinquishing the job when the current closers are ready, according to management.

PS, does FBG have a fantasy baseball site? I thought they did?

Gibson sees Gut as a better fit for the closer role, and given their recent performances there's reason for that.

Qualls is gonna get another shot down there as well. If you can get two of the three, you increase your chances of getting a few extra saves but also risk four runs over a third of an inning.

So I've got Bell, Simon and Heilman...Meek and League are FA's. Do I cut bait on one of these guys to pick up a future closer? I really like Meek, will he get the job over Hannnuhahan?

is it a keeper league? if its a keeper league might as well jump on meek. if not, idk. yes, i think he will get the job over hanrahan. and yes i think dotel will get traded if they can get an offer, but i doubt they'll just give him away. so i think its probably 75:25 that he gets traded.

Redrafff.Do I dump Heilman now? Wait for Gonzalez to get back and can Simon? :blackdot:

On a scale from 1 to 10, how important are saves to you right now in winning your league?

It's a...um, it's a H2H league.I think I can manage to hang on to both for another week and a half or so. I don't have any bench hitters, but my starting offense is pretty set. I have a ton of SP options. RP-wise, I have Bell, Simon, Meek and Hanrahan. I figure Bell and one of the PIT guys will be my go-to closers down the stretch.

I didn't see where you had said it was a H2H league in your prior posts...Simon is supposed to be closing at least until Gonzalez gets back into shape or he blows it. Simon actually looks pretty good though and Dotel seems destined to be dealt so Meek looks really good right now.

Jenks out as White Sox closer.

Anyone know who might be next in line?
My best guess would be Putz. He's been solid and has experience as a closer. Thornton may get a chance, but I believe he is the only lefty in their bullpen. I also think that this may be extremely temporary. Ozzie is very loyal to his players and I think Jenks will be closing again soon.
I think you are right. I don't see Ozzie giving up on Jenks the easy. I might still pick up Putz on the off chance he does so well Ozzie has a tough time going back to Jenks for at least a little while.

I pulled the trigger yesterday on picking up League for Simon. It leaves me short for a week, but I figure by the end of next week I'll have 3 def. closers (Bell, League, Meek/Hanrahan). Insanely, Putz was dropped this morning, so that's someone else to consider.I try not to mention it's H2H if possible. :goodposting:

They've gone to Thornton in the past when Jenks was unavailable. I don't expect that to change.

In the article Guillen even says "we are better with Bobby closing." It also says they will go by committee, so it looks like the answer is Putz, Thornton and Jenks will all be closing.

Jenks closed tonight.

For anyone else that interested in wasting their time trying to read the tea leaves in AZ, Heilman got the save tonight.

Gutierrez was well rested and Qualls set-up the 8th (with what looked like a clean 2K inning).

Yeah well Arizona decides who will close the game in their pregame meetings. This situation sucks, you have to have them all but they all generally suck. I have so many Arizona relievers on my teams that I feel like I'm paying their salaries. I'm done, best approach here is to just have one guy and hope he doesn't blow up in the 7th twice in a week and gets one save every other week.

My guess is Hanrahan, given that he has "closer experience", has been handling the 8th, and has been filthy-good this year. The two numbers that jump out are an O-Contact% (swings at balls outside of the strike zone) of 41.3%, where the league avg. is 66.5%, leading to an ungodly 14.7% swinging-strike percentage, which is in the company of guys like Matt Thornton, Carlos Marmol and the perennially slept-on Hong-Chih Kuo.

Sean Burnett with an impressive five out save vs the DBags tonight including inheriting two runners in the 8th.

rotoworld...

Jonathan Broxton has been stripped of the closer's role following Thursday's blown save.

Hong-Chih Kuo will replace him for now. Broxton pitched three scoreless innings in his first two appearances of the month, but he had a horrible outing Thursday after sitting four straight days. It's quite possible the lack of activity has had something to do with his struggles. Usually a very busy reliever, he hasn't worked on back-to-back days since July 8-9, and he's made just eight appearance since the break.

According to Dylan Hernandez, Hong-Chih Kuo is the Dodgers' new closer, but Octavio Dotel would be the choice in the ninth inning tonight.

That's because Kuo worked the last two days. We can't imagine that manager Joe Torre really wants to take Jonathan Broxton out of the role for any length of time, but Kuo could get some saves over the next couple of weeks.

Converted catcher Kenley Jansen hasn't given up a run yet in 7 appearances. He has 11 Ks in 7 IP.

Francisco Rodriguez out for the season with a thumb injury picked up punching his father-in-law. Your guess for Mets SVs (Dessens, Takahashi, Feliciano, Mejia) is probably as good as mine (Parnell). I'd stay awy from this situation altogether but I have a reputation to uphold.

Rosenthal saying that the Mets are looking into voiding his contract. About $18M :moneybag:
