2011 AL Most Valuable Player Winner (1 Viewer)

Disgraceful.

But the story here is less the joke that Verlander won and the fact that Ellsbury finished second.

After that meltdown?

Come on now.

I won't even get started on Grandy finishing 4th.

I hope the Yanks blow their payroll out to 250 million. There is such obvious bias in the baseball community against them, they might as well wear the black hat.

Hasn't their payroll been 250 before?Everybody hates the Yankees and most everybody hates the Red Sox. That's what you have to expect when you spend 2-3 times more than the average team.

Who knew Michael Young had a MVP ballot
People who should have their MVP-voting privileges revoked:1) Evan Grant
Read that he also left Pedroia off his ballot in 2008.
Evan_P_Grant Evan Grant

Embarrassing to vote a guy who hit .338, 106 RBIs, played three diff. INF positions and had at least 100 Abs in 3 key lineup spots MVP?
I'm not a DH hater but it's a stretch to call it a key lineup spot when attempting to justify your MVP ballot. :homer:

Who in the world thought that David Robertson was worth a 10th place vote? That's actually worse than giving Young a first-place vote.

Most Valuable Player on the AL Champion club. Played 159 games, played 5 different positions, was the glue as everyone else dealt with injuries and the like. 3rd in BA. 5th in RBI. Yeah, Grant has some homer shtick going on there, but I would like to see all of the ballots of the other writers. I'm sure you will see tons of voting like that.

He means the key lineup spots of 3-4-5.

:lmao: Ellsbury had a 358/400/667b line in Sept/Oct.

with 106 RBI and 88 runs scored.Young and the Rangers both had nice years and there have been past seasons where a 1st place MVP vote for him wouldn't have been ridiculous. But this wasn't one of those years.

I have no problem with Verlander winning, but man, some of these writers are idiots.

I know, I'm ready to embrace it. Get me Darvish, stat.

Congrats....well deserved. Verlander easily had the best season of anyone in the AL. The biggest crime was the dufus who left Verlander off his ballot.

I'm not sure he easily had the best season. But yes, he shouldn't have been left off anyones ballot. Just as Robertson shouldn't have gotten a 10th place vote (nor should have Ellsbury finished that low on anyone's either).

criminal. pitchers already have an award. Verlander deserved Cy Young, but he only plays 1/5 of a season so he shouldn't be an MPV candidate.

Justin Verlander he should ask the tigers for a new contract
He's making $12 million next year then $20 million in each of the following three years. It's not like he's playing at a deep discount going forward.
The $20 million actually starts in this next season. That's one of the reasons that payroll will be just as high as 2011 before signing anyone else. Between JV and the arbitration raises due DY and Porcello, the bad contracts dropping off don't really give any more flexibility. Of course it is nice that the only bad contract on the books is now Inge, and his isn't all that high (though it's still bad).

Players voted Verlander MLB Outstanding Player of the Year. So the people who play and know everyone seems to think Verlander had the best year of anyone.

As far as purity goes, Pitchers have been winning MVP awards since the beginning and have won their fair share over the years. Changing that now makes the award less pure from a traditionalist perspective.

Meh. Players can be idiots when it comes to this sort of thing.I'm sure up to last year or so MLB players would have voted Derek Jeter as the best SS in the game.

Don't know the guys name but he is a writer from Ohio.........guess the Buckeye/Michigander fued is alive and well..................but the guy should have his vote yanked

enjoyed this tweet from one Old Hoss Radbourn...

J. Verlander's key 2011 stats: 24-5, 2.40 ERA, 34 starts, 4 (?) CG, 250 K, and 1 blown save by J. Papelbon.
if you're on twitter, he's worth a follow

He forgot 16 losing streaks stopped which is the most since Sandy Koufax did it in 1965. He also threw more pitches than any other pitcher in baseball, 19 starts into the 8th inning and hitters had a .555 OPS against him. He also had a .92 WHIP, the best AL raw number since 2000 Pedro and the second best AL raw number since 1972.The more you know...

Seems to me he won largely because he had 24 wins and he had 24 wins lagely because of the crappy division he's in.
Yes, having the best ERA & strikeouts in the AL to complete the pitching triple crown and throwing a no-hitter had nothing to do with it.
He was a compiler in the American League's JV division. We saw what he did against real competition in the postseason.

I get that Verlander had a good year but stopping 16 losing streaks is as much a reflection on the quality of the back end of Detroit's rotation as anything else

What he did or did not do in the postseason is not relevant for this award.

Kind of the point I guess. In theory Brad Penny is more responsible for Verlander's MVP season than any one player on the Tigers roster.
