2011 Texans Off -season thread (1 Viewer)

Can someone please help me out and post what (at this time) you think the starting defensive front 7 will be for the Texans with the addition of the drafted players. A few Texans defensive players are still listed as DL in my league, and I can start them as such even if they move to LB now. Where will Cushing lineup?

Also, what recent defense will this Texans 3-4 defense resemble? Can we compare it to the Cowboys defense from last year? How about another NFL 3-4 from last year?

Thanks so much for the help!

Thanks for the post. I ask because I have Ryans. What does this move really mean for him? Also, Barwin is listed as a DL, but if he's "playing" a LB, is he worth picking up and being able to start as a DL?

If you can keep Barwin as DL, I would definately go after him. The biggest issue for Ryans will be health. I could see a situation that because of the heel that Sharpton replaces him in the pass set. Keep an eye out for his health (which is supposed to be onschedule at the moment)

Man, thank you for the help with this one!! I've got Ryans as one of the 7 LBs on my roster in a 10 team league (along with Beason, Mayo, Ruud, Tulloch, Hawthorne and McClain). I'm desperately trying to trade away at least 2 of them for proper value, just seeing which ones I should earmark to keep.

Thanks for the heads up on Barwin. If you could, what do you think his stat line would be for this coming year? I mean, the WOLB for the last Wade Phillips defense was DeMarcus Ware - 50-60 solo tackles and a crap load of sacks!! Any chance Barwin would get 50+ tackles and 5+ sacks?

Honestly if Barwin is less than 50 and 8 sacks then the Texans are probably in trouble.

Seriously?! 50 and 8?! That would put him in the top 10 of the DL in our league, and you're thinking that's his "floor"? He might be worth a 2nd or 3rd round rookie pick (he's currently a free agent).

A bit much to hope for, but Barwin has a lot of talent as a pass-rusher and the Texans were hoping for big things before he got injured in game 1 last year. He led all rookie DE's in '09 with 3.5 sacks, I would definitely pick him up if you have the roster room for a strong flyer.

John McClain tweeted the following:

At 6-7, 290, Mario Williams will become the largest OLB in NFL history. Wade Phillips plans to use him on the weak side.

In this article posted by Raider Nation, Cushing is called an outside LB. Perhaps just referencing last year's position but if they mean 2011 then that is contrary to everything I've read. Either way, this throws off my perceived configuration from all the previous talk. I guess Watts and Smith are now the starting DEs and Barwin or Reed will now be coming off the bench at outside LB?

But in all honesty, when I heard Wade was coming here I initially figured Mario would take over the Demarcus Ware role. I'm down to see how it plays out.
Considering they haven't been able to practice at all, I think it's just a lot of speculation on what roles these guys are gonna play. Until Wade gets them on the practice field running drills and stuff, it's all just conjecture.

That is what he is doing...Ware didn't cover often and Mario won't either.

There hasn't been much (any?) press coverage of the Texans players working out together. I came across the following transcript of a Kubiak interview on KILT I thought might be of interest on that regard:

How do you feel about Matt Schaub taking a leadership role and teaching the players everything they need to know on their own while holding workouts at Rice University?

“It hasn’t been a really publicized type of deal, but I do know that Matt [schaub] has done a real great job with our players. We got a good group that has been working together. Matt is so smart in knowing what we’re doing. He can go out there and put scripts together and throw seven-on-seven and get the guys going in the right direction. He can help any young guys that are out there working with him that need help from a receiver or running back standpoint, so I think we’ll see the fruits of Matt’s work you know whenever we do come back because it’s my understanding that he’s been doing a heck of a job with his teammates over there [Rice University].”
The other comment I thought was of interest was his saying that Wade Phillips' system is not complicated, which could be important with the potential shortened time to learn it before a season would start:
We are almost past the OTA period here. What is your level of concern in terms of developing the 3-4 defense if we move past mini-camps and have the lockout still going on?

“Well it’s obviously a concern, but I think the great thing we have going for us is Wade [Phillips]. His defense to me is not very complicated and he’s also shown he can get this thing done very quickly in some places he’s been and just being around him everyday with his confidence once he gets his hands on these guys and having Reggie [Herring] with him from Dallas, bringing Bobby King, a young coach with him from Dallas. I think that these guys can make up a lot of ground very quickly, so that does give me a great deal of confidence.”

DeMeco Ryans a leader for Texans

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- Houston Texans middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans has assumed a pivotal dual role for his team as the NFL lockout stretches into its fourth month.

Ryans is one of the Texans' player representatives, along with right tackle Eric Winston, responsible for keeping his teammates abreast of developments in the ongoing labor dispute.

And since coaches aren't allowed to have contact with players for now, Ryans has undertaken the job of teaching new coordinator Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme to the defense -- which ranked as one of the league's worst in 2010.

"I'm just doing my part, man," Ryans said with a smile.

Many of his teammates have come to Houston to do the same, with 35 players participating in a voluntary practice for about 80 minutes on Monday morning at Rice University.

Quarterback Matt Schaub, defensive end Mario Williams and linebacker Brian Cushing were among the starters who joined Ryans at the workout, the first of three this week. Draft picks Shiloh Keo, Brooks Reed and T.J. Yates also practiced.

Schaub led the players through a series of warm-up drills before the group split up, according to their positions. They mostly scrimmaged, without pads, for most of the last half of the practice.

"For us to be out here as a team, a group of guys choosing to be here, in the long-term will serve us good," Schaub said.

Ryans is still recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon that sidelined him for the last 10 games of last season. He referred to a playbook during the practice, and repeated calls to ensure that the players understood.

"It's important for us to get out here and get the guys some looks at our different offensive sets, and try to do our adjusting," Ryans said. "I think we are getting more comfortable with the terminology that we're using. The more reps you get, the better you get it."

But as much benefit as the team workouts provide, Schaub concedes that every NFL team will need extended training camp with coaches to properly prepare for the season.

Ryans says he's "encouraged" about what he believes are constructive meetings. But he offered no timeline for when he thought a new deal might be struck, only that he believes progress is being made toward ending the lockout that began March 12.

"It's not about getting a deal done as quickly as possible," Ryans said, "it's about getting a fair deal done. Whenever that time comes, when a fair deal is on the table, that's when it will get done. We're not in a big panic to get something done, just for the sake of getting it done."

Keo, a safety picked in the fifth round, says he's trying to put the lockout out of his mind. He's more concerned with learning the defense from Ryans and impressing his new teammates.

"I want to be updated on it every day, but I want to keep my head out of it," Keo said. "When I come out here, I want to be focused on the drills, meeting the guys, getting to know them, and performing. I'm not here to just wait for the lockout to end. I'm here to get work done early."

The Texans' defense, particularly the secondary, needs as much practice as it can get, with or without coaches. Houston ranked last in pass defense last season (268 yards per game) and produced only 13 interceptions.

Kareem Jackson, often the scapegoat for Houston's secondary issues last year, and fellow cornerback Glover Quin were both at Monday's workout.

Quin will move to safety in Phillips' defensive alignment. He said the team practices are crucial in helping the Texans learn the system.

"You kind of have to look at a playbook and say, 'OK, I think this is what they (the coaches) kind of want us to do," Quin said. "But it will also help us out, because when we do go in, when they make a call, we'll kind of know exactly what we have to do. We just need to figure out the technique they want us to play in.

"But if they give us a normal call, it's not like it's a foreign language anymore," Quin said. "We've had to teach ourselves. When you teach yourself, you pick up on it, you find ways that you can understand it, and when the coaches teach it, it just makes even more sense."

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/07/05/report-texans-will-pursue-asomugha/

When free agency begins, the biggest name on the market will be cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. And the team with gaping needs at the position will be on Asomugha’s trail.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that the Texans are expected to make a run at the soon-to-be-former Raider.

In the end, the question becomes how much it will cost to sign Asomugha, and that will be driven by the number of teams that pursue him.

The Texans had a high-end corner, but they allowed Dunta Robinson to walk via free agency to the Falcons last year. They’ll need to be ready to pay even more to Asomugha than it would have taken to keep Robinson, if the Texans choose to pursue Asomugha.

Well, duh. Even if you are an average guy, you are supposed to ask the hottest chick out.

I think it will really help the Texans in the future, even if they don't get Asomugha, to go after him hard. It will at least show their current players, as well as future potential free agents, that the Texans will do whatever they need to to improve their team. If this is just lip service (about going after him hard), and the Texans fall out of the running quickly for Asomugha, then I think the Texan's status as an average NFL franchise will remain intact.

He would probably be an upgrade. I'd be surprised if the Texans go after him given the way they seem to regard character.

http://torotimes.com/2011/07/12/texans-jacoby-jones-i-have-no-doubt-ill-be-right-back-at-home/

This Morning on CBS Houston Sportsradio 610, a day after Jones’ birthday, Jacoby Jones went on the record in order to put all speculation aside and said for a fact, “I have no doubt, I think I’ll be right back at home where I started at.” Jones also mentioned that he wants to come back home.”

Jacoby Jones later was asked his thoughts on Plaxico Burress’ recent mention of playing for an explosive Texans offense and Jones had the following to say, “Who wouldn’t mention the Texans? Look at the city, look at the coaching staff, look at the team and look at the organization.” Jacoby Jones said, “I’d mention them too.”

By the way, I'm finding texansbuzztap on twitter is a great source for Texans news. Great signal to noise ratio... almost everything they tweet is actual news or a link to an article.

Texans’ Rookie J.J. Watt Steps-Up in a Big Way Off the Field

AUTHOR: Joe Owens

Twenty-Five NFL players have been arrested during this locked out offseason. Some players in the case of Tennessee Titans Kenny Britt have been arrested multiple times and just as Britt’s arrest has grabbed headlines many of the other players arrested have garnered media attention both on a national and local level also.

Very rarely are we equally immersed into the headlines of the feel good stories performed by those we are enamored by and follow so closely. Unsure if it can all be attributed to the duality of mankind that peeks curiousity every time a superstar is shone in a negative light. But one we can be sure on and that being, there are no days in which great deeds are done in them that are more beloved by the masses. We merely need to put forth as much an effort to publicize the great deeds done as we so eagerly do when jumping at the chance to publicize the not so great.

In a shift from those very negative headlines to a proof positive headline, the Houston Texans 11th overall pick J.J. Watt has already made an everlasting impact among the Houston community in his very brief time here in the Bayou City and it all stemmed from a simple tweet on the social networking platform known as Twitter.

Nine-year-old Peter, who was paralyzed in a July 2 car accident that killed his parents, Robin and Joshua Berry, and injured his two younger siblings, wanted to leap out of his hospital bed in excitement when the 6-foot-6 Watt walked into the room, bearing autographed Texans’ T-shirts, hats and footballs for all three kids.

All from a tweet

Watt’s visit to the Berrys came about through a Twitter request.

Houstonian Zach Adelstein, 24, was reading about the tragedy online earlier in the week. He linked a Facebook story to Twitter, sent it to different Texans and Houston Rockets players that he follows and asked that it be re-tweeted.

“J. J. wrote back within a minute to say he wanted to visit the kids up at the hospital,” Adelstein told the JH-V on July 14. “He seems like a great guy.”

They direct messaged each other and Adelstein arranged the visit through Berry family close friend Tandy Harris.

“Zack asked me to re-tweet the link and I read the story and was absolutely touched – for the kids to lose their parents like that, but then still have the courage to be strong in spirit and fight for their recovery, it’s inspiring,” Watt told the JH-V during the hospital visit.

“To be able to come up here and see the kids and be able to put smiles on their faces in such a touch situation, it’s really meaningful. I figured it’s just something I can do to help these kids out,” he said.

There’s little doubt in our minds that J.J. Watt’s big play on th field reflects his big play off the field.

You can follow J.J. Watt on twitter @JJWatt and while your at it give us a follow as well @ToroTimes

Gerald Sensabaugh interested in playing for Texans

Veteran free agent safety Gerald Sensabaugh(notes) might be leaving the Dallas Cowboys and rejoining former Valley Ranch boss Wade Phillips with the Houston Texans.

Sensabaugh expressed interest in playing for the Texans and Phillips, who's installing his 3-4 defensive alignment in Houston as the new defensive coordinator.

"I could definitely see that if Dallas doesn't work out," Sensabaugh told ESPN 103.3 in Dallas. "Wade's a good guy, I already know his system and it would be an easy transition for me. I wouldn't have to learn anything new, and at the same time, I'd be able to help the other guys learn Wade's system. I could see that becoming an option."

Sensabaugh intercepted five passes last season.

"I'm going to make myself available to all 32 teams, shop myself around and see exactly what happens," he said. "I'm just really excited about my chance to cash in. I would like to stay in Dallas, but at the end of the day, it's a business thing. I've got to choose what's best for myself and what situation fits me the best."

How much money is Sensabaugh looking for?

Well, he made $1.75 million and $1.82 million for the Cowboys in 2009 and 2010.

He's looking for a lot more as a free agent.

"No, no, no, no," he said. "Not in the same zip code."

The Texans could relocate Sensabaugh, and they could sure use the help in their secondary.

Hitting you Texan fans up...

This can'te good for the running game?

Free agent FB Vonta Leach lists the Giants, Seahawks, and Chargers as possible landing spots in free agency.

Leach's agent was shopping the Pro Bowler around the league when the lockout was temporarily lifted on draft weekend, so there's a good chance the interest is mutual with each of the three teams. Leach is reportedly seeking the richest fullback deal in NFL history. Related: Giants, Chargers, SeahawksSource: ESPN.com Jul 19, 7:31 PM

Right, Leach was a monster of a run blocker. Still a chance he could get re-signed, but I'm not holding my breath. If they do manage to sign Nnamdi (also not holding my breath), not sure if they'd be able to afford Leach.

I think this next week could be the biggest week of Rick Smith's career. If he makes the right moves in free agency I think the Texans have a very good shot of winning the division. I think he needs to sign a veteran CB, a veteran safety, and a good number 2 receiver. The switch to Wade Phillips scheme will be good for the defense in the long run, but may take some time for it to be effective. Therefore, the signing of two veterans in the secondary, who can come in and play good solid defense will help the Texans in the early part of the season. Signing a good #2 receiver will help take some of the pressure off Andre Johnson, and should help the overall offense be more consistent. I think Plexico Burress, assuming he is in good shape physically, would be a great fit for the Texans. He is tough to defend in the red zone, and if you double him, then you open up opportunities for Andre and Arian.

With Jacksonville and Tennessee in transition, and Indianapolis getting older with Manning potentially having some health concerns, the AFC South is ripe for the picking. Rick Smith can put the Texans in good position to take it by adding the right veterans to help ease the Texans transition in the defense.

In addition, if Kubiak can do a better job of getting the whole team to play more consistently, and can get any production out of the Texans special teams, than the Texans could have a phenominal season. I am not betting the farm on that one.

If I were the Texans GM, my 3 keys for free agency are signing a corner, a nose tackle, and a safety, probably in that order.

I let Leach go unless I have the money... and with the Texans just what... about 7 or 8 million below the cap? I can't see filling the other needs and having the money to keep him too. We also need to resign Mario this year if I remember right as I think he's in the last year of his deal. Doing so might help save some cap room, but can they get that done in time to sign free agents and be under the cap?

I'd let Jacoby walk happily and sign a Plaxico assuming one can get him relatively cheap.

I agree that we need a CB, SS, and NT but I've got no need for Plaxico. AJ, Walter, Daniels should be just fine. If we can get a guy like Steve Smith (NYG) on the cheap then I'm down, but paying any sort of money for a niche guy, 2.5 years removed from the game... no thanks. I really don't care if we address the WR position at all. Maybe we get to see what Dorin Dickerson can do this year.

I'm not saying Plaxico because I'm gung ho about him. I'm saying him because I think you have the most chance of signing him dirt cheap but getting good production out of. And I think with the other FA needs, dirt cheap is what you need to do at WR. I wouldn't be horribly upset about the Texans planning on AJ, Walter, Anderson and Dickerson being their top 4. But if Dickerson is going to be your #4, I really think you need a bit of a proven presence backing him up. I mean, what if AJ gets hurt and Dickerson isn't showing he's an NFL caliber WR? Then you're down to Walter and David Anderson plus your tight ends? They should get someone more proven than Paul Williams or Derrick Townsel if Dickerson is your WR4.I'd love Steve Smith on the cheap. I just don't expect any FA's to be cheap given how much money some teams have... not unless they have some baggage ala Plax.

Here's a list of the WR free agents out there:

I've heard it mentioned that Plax will go wherever the money is, given this is likely his last contract and he's already got a super bowl.

Plus, the Texans hose themselves annually by not signing people with any sort of blemish on their record. I don't see them changing their tune this year for Plaxico.

We just need to focus on signing Eric Weddle and maybe a Carlos Rogers.

Cross your fingers and brace for disappointment...

My point in thinking the Texans need to go after someone like Plax is that it should make their offense more consistent which will keep them in more games. For all the accolades the Texans offense gets, consider the following from 2011:-Trailed Washington 27-10 in the 3rd quarter-Trailed Dallas 17-3 at the end of the 3rd quarter-Trailed NY Giants 24-3 at half-Trailed KC 21-7 in the 3rd quarter-Trailed Ind 24-3 in the 3rd quarter-Trailed Jax 17-3 at half-Trailed NY Jets 23-7 in the 4th quarter-Trailed Phi 20-10 at half-Trailed Bal 28-7 in the 3rd quarter-Trailed Ten 24-3 at halfAlso, in two other games, they were outscored 15-3 (SD) and 24-6 (Den) in the 2nd half. I know the defense andspecial teams were not helping out much, but those are long stretches in 75% of the Texans games that the offensewas reasonably ineffective. Someone like Plax, who is a great target in the red zone can either make a differencehimself or open things up for someone else. Like GregR said, he should not be too expensive and I think he probably givesyou the most bang for your buck.

Texans undrafted free agent signings:

Texans

Bubba Bartlett (TE/FB, Carroll College)

Jeff Maehl (WR, Oregon)

Zac Pauga (FB, Colorado State)

Pete Hendrickson (OT, Tulane)

Lestar Jean (WR, Florida Atlantic)

Terrance Tolliver (WR, LSU) ???

Bryan Braman (LB, West Texas A&M)

I know it might be a lot to read too much out of this... but 2 FB and 3 WRs? It might suggest they are not putting a high priority on re-signing Jacoby Jones or Vonta Leach if they are bringing in a lot of bodies at those positions.

Wide Receiver Specific Traits

Separation Skills 3 Long, high-cut and straight line receiver. Going to have limitations running the complete route tree. Has tightness in hips and is segmented with lateral in and out cuts. Also does not drop weight well when gathering at the top of stem with hook, curl, stop, comebacks etc. Can be a second late getting head around as well. Concerns about ability to gain adequate separation working against press coverage at the next level. At his best running nine, posts, corner and any type of crossing routes. Long strides allow him to run away from coverage running short-to-intermediate crossing routes. Wades through traffic well working against zone coverage. Also does a nice job of locating and getting into soft spots in this area.

Ball Skills 3 Displays good but not great hands. Will have mental lapses and drop a few throws he should make on occasion. Flashes ability to pull in tough grab outside of frame. Most natural catching the ball above shoulders. However, a bit inconsistent securing the ball in traffic. Flashes ability to track the deep ball. Can elevate and win one-on-one jump ball situations but can be pushed around by more physical defenders on occasion.

Big play ability 3 Long strides give him deceiving top-end speed to get behind coverage on occasion. Displays good body control and is shifty when reaching the open field. Not a lot of quick-twitched elusiveness though and does not have the ability to make defenders miss in confined areas. Needs a crease to turn a short throw into a big gain.

Competitiveness/ Toughness 3 Shows willingness to attack the middle of the field. However, can lose focus and take eye off of throw when sensing a big hit is coming. Will fight for extra yards after contact. Would like to see more aggression attacking the ball. Gives adequate effort as a run blocker but can be more physical at times.

Production 1 2007: 9 receptions, 118 yards (13.1), 1 TD.2008: 39 receptions, 421 yards (10.8), 5 TD.2009: 53 receptions, 696 yards (13.1), 6 TD.2010: 77 receptions, 1,076 yards (14.0), 12 TD.

Height-Weight-Speed 3 Possesses adequate height but a very lean frame and could use to add some bulk. Top-end speed is adequate for the position.

Durability 2 Is lean but has remained durable to this point.

Intangibles 2 Started career at FS before being forced to WR due to injuries as a freshman. Quiet and leads by example. Very accountable and coaches rave about his toughness.

Wide Receiver Specific Traits

Separation Skills 4 Benefitted from scheme and system at collegiate level. Possesses quick feet but lacks suddenness and explosive movements with routes. Also struggles to get off of press coverage against more physical corner. Will have restrictions consistently separating from man coverage at the next level. Displays some savvy working against zone coverage. Does a nice job of avoiding traffic and adjusting routes on the fly when recognizing coverage rotations. Displays a nice feel for soft spots.

Ball Skills 3 Hands are above-average. Generally catches with hands but will let ball into frame occasion which can't result in double catches or drops. Displays good body control and flashes ability to pull in catch outside of frame. However, just a marginal leaper and can get pushed around by stronger DB's in jump ball situations.

Big play ability 4 Not much of a downfield threat. Has enough top-end speed to get behind coverage on occasion. Tracks the ball well but won't win many one-on-one jump balls. Lacks elusiveness and top-end speed to turn a short throw into a big gain. However, does a nice job of maximizing yards after catch by quickly getting up field and reading blocks.

Competitiveness/ Toughness 2 Willing to do the dirty work over the middle of the field. Displays focus and toughness to make catch in traffic. Gives good effort as a run blocker but lack of strength hinders his effectiveness in this area.

The Texans have agreed to contract terms with 18 undrafted free agents, including receiver Terrence Toliver, the Hempstead native who played at LSU and was voted the Most Valuable Offensive Player in this year's Cotton Bowl.

NFL teams were able to negotiate with undrafted free agents on Monday, but they couldn't sign until today. The Texans are in the process of signing their undrafted free agents.

Toliver, 6-5, 203, caught five passes for 112 passes and three touchdowns in LSU's 41-24 victory over Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl.

The Texans agreed with two other receivers, Lestar Jean (Florida Atlantic) and Jeff Maehl (Oregon).

Other offensive players agreeing to terms were fullback Justin Bartlett (Montana-Carroll), guard Howard Bargieri (Rutgers), fullback Zac Pauga (Colorado State), tackle Peter Hendrickson (Tulane) and tackle Darius Morris (Temple).

The Texans also agreed with nine defensive players: linebacker Mister Alexander (Florida State), linebacker Bryan Braman (West Texas A&M), linebacker Steve Friday (Virginia Tech), end Zane Parr (Virginia), end John Graves (Virginia Tech), cornerback Darian Hagan (California), cornerback Jason Teague (TCU), safety Maurice Rolle (Louisiana-Lafayette) and tackle Adrian Taylor (Oklahoma).

The Texans also agreed with punter Brett Hartmann (Central Michigan).

First of all, I think Plax will be looking for the biggest paycheck he can find. Second, he probably isn't that good after 2.5 years away from the game and at an age where decline has already started. At this stage, I really don't think he's better than Walter. He may still be a good jump ball guy, but I'm sure he's inferior in other important aspects such as downfield blocking. Third, he's not been seen as much of a team guy. Finally, as I've mentioned before, the Texans don't sign anyone with a blemish on their record. What makes anyone think it is even feasible that they'd break that ridiculous golden rule for an over the hill guy that just got out of prison?IF they did break the rule, Plaxico would be the 2011 version of Colvin. Waste of money. I'd rather have guy like Donte Stallworth. I bet he'd be cheaper and more effective. Maybe even see if we can sign Roy Williams after the Cowboys cut him. If we are worried about AJ going down, there are plenty of decent guys we could take a chance on.

If you don't think Plax can be productive, that's fine, we can disagree about that. As for team player, I think he did alright with the Giants when they won the super bowl and he made the game winning catch.I agree that the Texans tend to go for squeaky clean guys. That does not mean they shouldn't take a chance on someone with issues in their past. Perhaps the Michael Vick experiment in Philadelphia will give the Texans a better feeling about signing a guy with issues. I would have no problem if the Texans signed Stallworth, as he has always been pretty effective in the places he has played.Roy Williams? The Texans don't need a guy who totally underperforms his potential. He is a guy who looks good on paper (decent statistics) but really does not impact games. While I wouldn't call him a cancer, he just seems to me to be someone who doesn't add anything to the teams he plays for.
