Excellent... just looked up his stats, he was tied for 7th last year in punting average and 6th in net punting average. Turk was 25 and 21 in those stats.
 
Sepulveda is a pretty decent punter, but he sure gets injured a lot for a punter. Regardless, I won't miss Turk no matter who the new punter is. Remember the classic play he had against SD a few years back?

One of the Texans' main priorities now is re-signing All-Pro fullback Vonta Leach, the lead blocker for 2010 NFL leading rusher Arian Foster. Ralph Vitolo, Leach's agent, said this week that the Texans contacted him and expressed interest in bringing Leach back.

 
As a Bengals fan I can tell you you'll really like Joseph. He is awesome in run support and great in coverage as well. Also a good guy off the field. Not a fiery leader but a quiet guy who just goes about his business, but is well liked.

The only 2 negatives about him are his hands (he drops a lot of picks, though he has worked on it and improved in recent years) and his feet (history of foot injuries going back to college that have been a pretty regular problem).

Overall, he's a top 10 CB in the NFL in my opinion.

Danieal Manning - DB - Texans Texans agreed to terms with SS Danieal Manning on a four-year, $20 million contract with $9 million guaranteed.It's hard not to love both of Houston's secondary upgrades executed today. Manning is fairly old to be finishing up his rookie contract (he turns 29 in August), but he also appears to be just now coming into his own. Manning finished No. 5 overall in Pro Football Focus' 2010 cover safety rankings, and he fills very hard against the run. So far, Rick Smith is having an excellent week. They have addressed CB and Safety, filling both with quality players. Through the draft they addressed help for the front seven. I still would have liked to see them add a threat at WR, but apparently they are satisfied with Jacoby's progress.I think they will look now to re-sign Vonte, maybe sign a punter, and then fill in some depth (OL, Other back-ups who are good special teams players)The pressure now shifts to Wade and Gary. Get these guys in camp and get them ready!

Yes, about the only real positive to re-signing Jacoby for me is that he already knows the offense, and on a team that half the roster is going to have to learn a new system, maybe that's a good thing.Though I'd still rather have any number of other guys who are out there now. But I can't find much fault with the other moves they made, especially given the cap constraints they seem to be under.Would still like a nose tackle and Leach, and even another corner that might let Kareem Jackson move into the nickel, but not sure we have much more money. I think we'll be seeing some cuts and restructuring now that the deal with Joseph is done.
 
The other great thing about the Manning signing is he can return Kick-offs.

Slaton was brutal last year as he seemed to always use the following formula:

-Catch ball

-Run 20 yards down field

-Run into someone and fall down

Getting someone who can give the Texans better field position off kick-offs is a huge help to both the offense and the defense.

 
Amongst kick returners who had more than 15 kick returns, Manning ranked 15th with a 24.7 yard average. Slaton ranked 42nd out of 44 with a 19.7 yard average.

So 5 yards difference per return between the two last year.

Manning also ranked 9th in kick return avg. in 2009 and 1st in kick return avg. in 2008.Even if he is declining some, he is still better than Slaton.

I'm not disagreeing with you, was just posting the stats. I'd rather have him back there than Slaton, easily.
 
It bugs me that other teams are practicing now and the Texans don't start until Monday. I realize their first preseason game is later than others, but the regular season start is the same as everyone else.

Lombardi talked about this on Simmon's podcast the other day and the reason why he isn't sold on the Texans is because they never are physical in practice and said you can't just turn on a switch and get physical during games when your practices are soft.

Leach's agent would only confirm the Texans, but Fox 26 Houston is told the Ravens, Cowboys, Broncos, and Giants are also in the mix. The Giants released Madison Hedgecock, and there are rumors that former Ravens FB Le'Ron McClain is eyeing the Chiefs. He has repeated the iea that the Texans are soft for a couple of years now.

My thoughts exactly. Nnamdi went for $12m a year, Joseph for $9.75m a year. Wouldn't have minded seeing Nnamdi go for a couple more million, but still... Texans could have easily gotten left holding the bag had they waited. I wonder if Cromartie will get overpaid now by the teams who are left.
 
I'm ecstatic to have Joseph and Manning. I feel pretty good about those 2 and Quin at safety, just worried about the other CB spot. Anyone think Harris can win that spot over Kareem?

Also, I'd still like a veteran-minumum type NT to add depth. I know he's pretty much washed up, but didn't Jamal Williams play for Wade in SD? I would think he'd be cheap and they'd hopefully only need him for a handful of plays a game...

Yes he did, he was a pro bowl NT there. I was reading up on him awhile back and sounds like he's lost a step now. But I'd be fine with him as an affordable signing. Manning said he hadn't played in a 3-4 in the NFL but had played it some in college.

Joseph said the Bengals had a competitive offer but for him it was about coming to play with the players the Texans had, a proven quarterback, etc, pro bowl and all pro on the defensive side, etc.

Manning said soon as he hit free agency he wanted to come back home to Texas so that was his biggest thing.

The AFC South holds two of the top six spots in Danny Tuccitto’s 10 biggest NFL injuries to watch.

Houston linebacker DeMeco Ryans is sixth and Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew is fourth.

Here’s what Tuccitto says, paired with my thoughts.

Ryans:

Injury: Torn left Achilles tendon

Tuccitto: “Defenses typically switch to the 3-4 based on the talent and depth of their linebacker corps. With three current or former Pro Bowlers among their four starters and second-round pick Brooks Reed likely providing pass rush off the bench, the 2011 Texans fit the bill. Ryans' recovery from a torn left Achilles tendon appears to be the only real question mark among the group. As the presumptive starter at weakside inside linebacker, his main responsibility will be as a tackling machine in run defense, a task that suits him perfectly.

“Before his injury, Ryans was one of only two linebackers to have more than 400 total tackles from 2006 to 2009, and he helped the 2009 run defense to its second-best ranking in franchise history (16th). Last season, the Texans dropped eight spots to 24th.

“Although he's still young and is now nine months removed from surgery, it's no guarantee that Ryans will return to his preinjury form this season: A 2009 study of NFL Achilles tendon injuries found that a returning player's three-year production after surgery is an average of 50 percent worse than his three-year performance before surgery. If that happens with Ryans, Houston might again find itself as the NFL's breakout team that doesn't break out.

Kuharsky: How well and how completely Ryans returns from this injury is a huge storyline for the Texans. He’s a great player and a great leader and if he isn’t the same guy he was before the injury, the defense will suffer for it.

Vonta Leach - RB - Texans

The Broncos are reportedly trying to sign free agent FB Vonta Leach. :unsure:

Leach is the best lead-blocker in football, and the Broncos could use him in John Fox's conservative, run-first scheme. Denver's current starter is special teamer Spencer Larsen. Leach has also drawn interest from Baltimore and Dallas. Related: BroncosSource: Denver Post Jul 29, 10:32 PM

 
Former Browns FB Lawrence Vickers says his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is talking to the Texans. They need to replace Vonta Leach.

Vickers, who grew up in nearby Beaumont, resides in Houston. He said he'd love to play for the Texans. He spent first 5 seasons with Browns.

Vickers is 6-0, 255. He's 28. He's a lead blocker in the Vonta Leach mold. Texans need a veteran. TE James Casey gets first shot at the job.

McClain_on_NFL John McClain

Ty Warren, who grew up in Bryan and played at Texas A&M, an hour from Houston, is visiting the Texans on Monday.
