I think this next week could be the biggest week of Rick Smith's career. If he makes the right moves in free agency I think the Texans have a very good shot of winning the division. I think he needs to sign a veteran CB, a veteran safety, and a good number 2 receiver. The switch to Wade Phillips scheme will be good for the defense in the long run, but may take some time for it to be effective. Therefore, the signing of two veterans in the secondary, who can come in and play good solid defense will help the Texans in the early part of the season. Signing a good #2 receiver will help take some of the pressure off Andre Johnson, and should help the overall offense be more consistent. I think Plexico Burress, assuming he is in good shape physically, would be a great fit for the Texans. He is tough to defend in the red zone, and if you double him, then you open up opportunities for Andre and Arian. With Jacksonville and Tennessee in transition, and Indianapolis getting older with Manning potentially having some health concerns, the AFC South is ripe for the picking. Rick Smith can put the Texans in good position to take it by adding the right veterans to help ease the Texans transition in the defense. In addition, if Kubiak can do a better job of getting the whole team to play more consistently, and can get any production out of the Texans special teams, than the Texans could have a phenominal season. I am not betting the farm on that one.
