2013 ACC Football - Official Thread (1 Viewer)

Sorry if a thread has already been started. I'm anxious for the Tar Heels this year. Tough opening game for them, but I think they have a shot at beating the Gamecocks. Regardless, I think an improvement over last year is to be expected.

Hope you're right, but think you're wrong about UNC winning. Hoping Clemson can take UGA - a win against them would build on the momentum from the Peach Bowl win over LSU.

Oh, it's a long shot for them to beat SC. From everything I've read though Renner has been playing great and I think they way he played the last half of the season last year will carry over this year. Even losing Bernard, they have a lot of depth at RB. Tough road games at Georgia TEch and Virginia Tech. GT just has their number. I'm really looking forward to this year. Fedora wants to pick up the pace on offense even more than he did last year.

Heels should be off the charts good. Doubt they can win in Columbia to start off with. I think the Pack surprises with 7 to 8 wins. Our schedule is embarrassingly easy. In 3 years I bet Coach D will one of the hottest coaches in football.

Carolina will be good or should be, but tough road games in conference plus at Columbia won't be easy. Defense should be improved this year as well. I just hope Renner continues to improve his play and his role as a leader. Really interested to see if AJ Blue can step up and be the man at RB. I think the ceiling is 10 wins in the regular season, but that is very optimistic. I think the floor would be 7 wins and that would be a major disappointment. I think they win one of the road games in conference at either Georgia TEch (very unlikely), Virginia Tech, or Raleigh. Something tells me they lose at home to Miami though. I really would like to say 9-3 would be their record, but until they can prove they can win some tough games, I am going with 8-4.

Carolina landed Ty Tomlin today. Really nice recruiting class they have so far. If they can land OT Bentley Spain then it's going to make a good recruiting class even better. Walt Bell has done a great job of recruiting some good players. Hoping they can keep the momentum.

Looking forward to seeing the continued progress of the Duke program. What a difference having a great coach and recruiter can make! Here is to beating UNC again this year and returning to a bowl game!! :homer:

Add Bentley Spain to the class. Very nice grab for the Heels. Highly regarded OL... Not the flashy skill position recruit, but nabbing these solid linemen is what makes a good offense an even better one.

What gives people? How has this thread been dormant for more than a month? Along with the fact that there are actual games tonight for the newly expanded ACC, over the past 4-5 weeks:

  • A starting RB at one school was declared academically ineligible by NCAA but reinstated on appeal
  • A starting RB at another school was arrested for an on-campus assault of a female; the school and local press remained silent for weeks; the coach suspended the player for a whole game, but only after it finally hit the press; then the RB receives deferred prosecution and could have the charges completely dropped after counseling
  • A walk-on DB with a famous father at yet another school is facing felony battery charges but the coach is allowing him to practice with the team
Any one of these scenarios would have generated pages of content in the basketball thread. I can only imagine the discussion if an ACC basketball player pulled the assault on a female/school says nothing/on way to having charges dropped triple. And the collective hand-wringing over a player with a felony batter charge being allowed to practice would have been quite serious as well.

I don't know how the crack ACC news team I've come to know and love missed these items, but if we're going to have an official ACC football thread we need to step up our game.

And while I believe UNC will be better this year, I'm not optimstic about tonight. Maybe if it was in Charlotte with a 50-50 ticket split, but not in Columbia. Looking forward to Clowney vs. Hurst. Just hope Ebron gets the opportunity to get downfield and doesn't have to stay in a help protect the QB on most plays.

Not as excited about Wake-Presbyterian.

Elijah Hood is a huge get for Carolina. This guy looks like he could be a beast!

Looking forward to tonight's game. Starts at 5:00pm here. May have to duck out of work early.

How do you see tonight's game playing out? Think UNC can score on their defense? Expecting a 17-14 type game?

outside of about 3-5 USC turnovers I simply cannot fathom any way UNC can win this game. USC is simply going to dominate both lines of scrimmage.

So who are the 3 players? I don't follow the rest of the ACC very close, but none of these really ring a bell.

South Carolina win but UNC covers the spread, about -11 I believe.

If Brenner stays upright, he can take advantage of the Gamecock secondary, but he has to get the ball out quick. I know NFL scouts probably want to see Clowney-Hurst, but I think Clowney can do a lot of damage from the other side against the new starters.

If UNC gets some home run plays - combined with the Spurrier offense - I could see 38-31 or so. But every South Carolina fan I know is worried about how the team always plays tight the first game. That could lead to the 17-14 score.

I would love to see UNC with the ball and a chance to win the in the last 5 minutes.

#1 is Josh Harris for Wake Forest. Apparently his advisor signed him up for a course that he didn't know about, therefore he never went to class and got a zero. They are calling it a miscommunication.

#2 is Shadrach Thornton for NC State. He was arrested for misdemeanor assault on a female for grabbing his girlfriend's arm, and pushing her against the wall in the school library. He is getting counseling.

#3 is Hud Mellencamp for Duke. Son of John (Cougar) Mellencamp. He allegedly helped beat up a 19 year old with his brother and another person.

My guess is that after all of the scandals UNC has gotten busted for and gotten away with relating to athletics, none of that other stuff measures up. Your school set the bar high. :grad: :P

Ah, the NC State fan perspective: unearned academic credits are a way more serious issue than beating up women.

It's cool though, guys. He's getting counseling.

Now this is more like it. :boxing:

I was going with incident that happened at school with national visibility versus incident that happened to one of the most "perfectly average" teams in the country.

FWIW he had a fight with his girlfriend in the library. Someone on the library staff called the cops because he "pushed her". His girlfriend never wanted to press charges from what I can tell, and was by his side in court arguing on his behalf.

Rihanna didn't want to press charges on Chris Brown either. Does he have any eligibility? Maybe he can replace Lorenzo Brown at point guard.

(I really don't care, I was just indulging our friend NMYMND with a little friendly ####talking)

Sorry. If I've learned anything over the past few years (and it's admittedly not much) - any attempt to counter the widely held beliefs of opposing fan bases (or broad generalizations printed by Raleigh newspapers) with facts is not allowed.

I thought #2 was the MD RB, but then I remembered the Terps are persona non gratis these days.

Remember the scene in Kubrick's 2001 when the astronaut free-falls away from the space station? That's what many MD fans feel like.

My Hoos will be 5-7 or 4-8 this year. Next year and the year after should be a lot different. We have some nice recruits coming in. Of course I've said that before.

This one's for you, Uruk.
:hifive: Is that some of your artwork?
No. I didn't make that youtube video. I searched "turtle flying in space" and there it was waiting for you.
I knew that - seen some of your artwork and it's good. Just being stupid. Carry on, y'all.

Did some 3rd grader win a contest and get to design UNC's new uniforms? Please tell me those were a 1 game deal and they haven't joined the rest of us in the world of awful uniforms?

I didn't think they were that bad. I've seen worse. I wonder when they are going to wear those metallic Heel footprint helmets again. I think the only time they have worn them was last year against the Pack. That game is hard to forget. State was about to add another W to their 5 game winning streak against UNC, but with just 13 seconds left, State made the terrible mistake of punting the ball straight to Giovani Bernard, who took it 74 yards for a game winning score. booooooooooooooooo!!

I hope that was the first game in SCar's march to an undefeated national championship, but I withhold judgment on the Gamecocks offense until they play a defense that can tackle and stay within 10 yards of downfield receivers.

Didn't expect to win, but was hopeful there would be improvement, and the defense actually looked worse. The 4th-and-2 where they hit the Gamecock RB in the backfield and he then pulled about 5 defenders for an 8-yard gain was the worst single play - thought I would accept arguments for the 65-yard TD pass, the muffed punt when they had momentum and a chance to cut the deficit to single digits before halftime or the 75-yard TD run immediately following the 3rd quarter FG.

I would also like to hear some explanation of why Renner seemed to be trying designed runs in the 2nd half - not his game - and also why there were play calls like "inside handoff on 3rd-and-19" when your down 17 points in the fourth quarter. Almost like the coaching staff called the game and were ready to move on.

They have a non-conference game and a bye before heading to Atlanta, but unless the defense seriously improves, I'm probably not going to enjoy GT's option putting up another 40+ points and 300 rushing yards on us agan.

I think the metallic helmet may have been in play at one point, then at some point in August South Carolina posted photos of their metallic helmet. There may have been a mutual agreement that neither team would wear them, but I'm purely speculating there.

So the worst impression you got was the uniforms?
That was a beatdown. 17-0 by the time I got home from work. It did free up some time unexpectedly to scout bench players for my draft this weekend, though.

Maryland's uniforms makes those worn by Carolina last night look like Penn State's

Ha. The Ga. Tech beehive mess is right up there too. I didn't get the fascination with all the navy in UNC's uniform last night. Their regular uniforms are just fine.

Didn't get to see today's game, but pleased with the 40-14 outcome in Doeren's first game. It was at home against an overmatched opponent, and the starting QB is now out for up to 6 weeks. But there were a lot of bright spots, including the backup QB and the freshmen.

I predict 8 regular season wins for State, and I predict State's program will be very good in 2 more seasons, once Doeren has gotten his first two recruiting classes in to build some depth.

:wolf:

Twerpies played an awful team yesterday, but it was nice to see CJ Brown back at QB. Brown got injured before the season started last year after O'Brien transferred. The entirerity of available QBs got knocked out, to the point where MD had to play a F LB at QB. I'm no Edsall fan (the way he left UConn and some of the "my way or the highway" tactics he installed were really bad), but I have to give him a pass on last year. Better show something this year though, Coach, or your ### may be grass.

So based on what we've seen so far, this is pretty much down to the winner of FSU@Clemson vs. winner of GT@Miami for the title, and if Clemson can keep from Clemsoning this season, they could actually have a shot at the BCS title game.

70-0 win over Elon. Obviously like seeing the 70 but much more happy about the 0. Vad Lee is a superstar. We will see how many playmakers he has around him when we play real competition.

State's QB Brandon Mitchell started the game, and looked good, but unfortunately he broke a bone in his foot. The backup QB, Pete Thomas, did a nice job, but Mitchell moved the ball better when he was under center. According to Doeren, he didn't decide who was going to be the starter until the day of the game due to the QB competition being so close. The freshman RB Matt Dayes is fast and shifty. He should pair well with Thornton this season.

Non-ACC - ECU won their high scoring game, and their offense looked really good (their QB Carden looked great), but their D looked bad. They played ODU, and they had a running QB that gave ECU fits. They fired their DC last season, and I can only hope that their new one improves the D as the season goes on.

Clemson has a real good shot at a NT if they can run the table. They already beat Georgia, who should have a fine season and potentially go to the SEC Championship again. They also have S. Car last game of the season, see Georgia. Other games on the schedule that will help are FSU, who should be in the top 10. Also, GTech who IMO will finish as a top 25 team this season. Throw in the ACC Championship, best case being they face an unbeaten Mia team or GTech team. The biggest problem anybody has this year is that OSU and Bama have remarkably easy schedules. OSU far more than Bama who at least has LSU/A&M in the west and the SEC Championship.
