2013 Closers (2 Viewers)

I think I like JMontero better than Perez, but that's a different convo... Frieri for me as well. Better arm, better team. Don't hate Cishek either though as a cheap closer option.
Yea? Why Montero over Perez?I do have Madson so I am tempted to grab Frieri to lock up Angels saves. Although I did just try to get both Cishek and Frieri from the guy for Montero, Veras, and Marte.
eh, probably splitting hairs, but if I'm going to buy off of short season flashes, I'll take the guy with the better pedigree as a top prospect. When Perez is forced to catch a full season, I expect his numbers to tail at least somewhat. Montero already had a full season to adjust to Seattle and got a little better. The fences are being moved in and they have some bats around him that could make a leap. Minor stuff and nothing groundbreaking, but that's why I lean Montero. Still, I like the Frieri/Madson combo.

I'm looking for another RP. My league counts NSVH and not Saves. I already have Grilli, Balfour, Peralta, Cook and Gregerson. Available: League, Fujikawa, Rondon, Bailey, Madson.
Why are League and Rondon available? They're the assumed closers at this point. Id go with this order.Rondon - upside

League - getting closer money

Fujikawa - just a matter of time

Bailey - probably needs an injury

Madson - hasnt been healthy in almost 2 years
To your first point, League and Rondon are available because with NSVH, there is less need to get a closer. Middle RPs carry a higher weight. When looking at last yr's numbers, the top 10 NSVH guys were Jim Johnson (48), Rodney, Soriano, Clippard, Kimbrel, Chapman, Balfour, Peralta, Motte, and Pestano & Perez (tied with 35). Middle RPs like Grilli (only 2 saves), Boggs (O saves) and Burnett (2 saves) were RP16 (tied), RP 16 (tied) and RP20. And they had NSVHs of 31 & 30.Secondly, thanks for the ranking.

:bag: Strike everything I said. No idea who I would take in a NSVH league since Ive never even heard of it before today.

I like Fujikawa the best of those options.

North Shore Veterinary Hospital?
Yes. We count the North Shore Veterinary Hospital.

I'm concerned about the fact that the Tigers don't have a solid closer yet, but I have heard that Rondon is doing pretty well.

Well, he had a good outing yesterday
Game was on ESPN today, so I had it on in my office for background noise.Pretty sure Rondon was the suck again today.(don't hold me to that, I wasn't really paying attention)edit:
Working on back-to-back days for the first time this spring, Bruce Rondon gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning Wednesday against the Phillies. Today's poor showing has to be a blow to Rondon's chances of getting save opportunities next month. After throwing a perfect inning Tuesday, he walked two and allowed two hits today. His spring ERA is back up to 5.84.

Just searched twitter for Rondon and he's getting blasted after today's outing. Many including sports writers calling for his demotion to AAA, sounds like it may happen. Either way, almost no chance he'll be closing for the Tigers next week.

From what I've read today it sounds as if he's a candidate to be sent down as well. This situation is a mess, why they don't resign Valverde is mind-blowing.

So you spoke to Leyland then? The fact is he has never been given a chance to close in a bog league game and the Tigers need a closer. Until we see what he can do there is no telling what will happen. Saying there is "no chance" is as absurd as someone else here saying he'll get probably get 25 saves. We just don't know.Leyland made it clear he didn't want Benoit closing, Al Al is out, so to me it will be a Coke/Benoit/Rondon split to start and Leyland will play matchups. The guy I want to get chances Brian Villarreal, could also be in the mix. Al Al or Rondon will be the last pitcher sent down, I think Rondon stays for the beginning of the year.

:lmao: No it isn't. Don't you think Valverde would have been signed by someone, anyone, if he was even reasonably able to fill a bullpen role?

To be clear, I said almost no chance. This is an opinion, everyone has one. Lighten up Francis.

If he's hitting 93-95 mph as has been reported, he should be signed. He's got to be better than a wild rookie who doesn't appear to be ready to close games.

Here ya go:
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Atlanta Braves are finding that former closer Billy Wagner -- and his 422 career saves -- aren't easy to replace.

So they won't try to do it with just one person.

Jonny Venters and Craig Kimbrel will enter the season sharing the closer's role. Manager Fredi Gonzalez isn't concerned about not having a full-time answer for the ninth inning.

"In a perfect world, you'd like to name one guy, but I can't sit here and say May 15 is going to be the day or June 20," he said. "Maybe we'll go the whole way. It's not a bad thing. It really isn't."

Neither the left-handed Venters nor the right-handed Kimbrel started last season in the major leagues, so neither has much experience. Kimbrel, 22, at least had been a closer in the minor leagues.

That will enable Gonzalez to mix and match, depending on whether left-handed or right-handed hitters are coming up.

"It's a luxury ... that we have two guys that have closer stuff," general manager Frank Wren said.

Both showed great promise last season and the bullpen again appears to be a plus, even with Wagner's retirement.

"Craig's got a crazy arm and I expect he'll be running out there for the ninth most times," Venters said. "But if they stick me in there, I'm comfortable with it. I feel good about it. I feel like I have a good mentality for it. I like to go right at guys and see what happens."

Venters, who turned 26 on Sunday, was a starter before joining the Atlanta bullpen early last season. Appearing in 79 games a year ago, his hard sinker baffled major league hitters as he posted a 1.95 ERA and struck out 93 batters in 83 innings. Opponents hit just .203 off him.

He hasn't allowed a run yet this spring and has given up just two hits in his eight one-inning outings.

Kimbrel, who dominated at times last season after coming up for good in the minors, has a fastball that reaches the high 90s and a knee-buckling curveball. He was 4-0 with a 0.44 ERA and struck out 40 in 20 2/3 innings with the Braves.

Control is his only real issue. He struggled in two of his first three appearances this spring. But he has six straight scoreless outings, in which he has allowed one hit while striking out eight and walking one in six innings.

"We miss Billy Wagner," Venters said. "He really taught me a lot last season and I know he helped Craig, too. But I think we still have a good bullpen. Now it's our time to show it."
I know this is all new to you, knob, but Kimbrel wasn't the anointed closer two years ago and hadn't closed in the majors before he got his first save in 2011. He also had issues in spring training.

Kimbrel have up 2 runs in 3 of his first 4 outings. He then pitched 10 scoreless innings, only giving up 4 hits and 2 walks.

Doesn't really sound like Rondon to me

"Mind-blowing."
I've always liked your posts but never realized what an arrogant ##### you were. You come in here and misquote me, go on some stupid rant about me using twitter and just act like a tool in general. This thread is about closer information and guys giving opinions. I couldnt care less about what you think of my posts. Keep acting like a tool though, it's entertaining.

Kimbrel's and Rondon's situations and their minor league successes are similar, people are overreacting one way or the other and that's the point. When the games don't mean anything you don't necessarily get the complete picture and Rondon has mostly been awesome or awful this spring. I didn't think he'd break camp as the closer since we've starting discussing this in January (yeah I know I'm a "guppie")but I also want to see what he can do. No one knows anything yet, if he makes the team he'll get some save ops early. Then we'll see where he really is.

What team you following these days? Huge Twins fan turns diehard A's fan in 3 months. Neat! Glad you had time add your :2cents: in here.

My wife's whole family (and it's LOTS - dem Catholic Italians breed like bunnies) lives in Detroit and they love the Tigers as much as any large family can love a team. If the Tigers signed Valturde to close, I bet 90% of them would take to the streets in some sort of revolt with pitchforks and burning tar. There is no way that team can bring that suckhole back in to close. IMHO.

Oh, the other 10% of them are clinically challenged mentally.

Was offered Grilli straight up for Janssen, I see no real point to making or not making the trade, other than the fact it's a Blue Jay fan heavy league and could likely get more for Janssen, really posting here to ask what the point of proposing a trade of the 20th best closer for the 21st best closer (approximately) is...

Six of one, half dozen of the other. Although some people will probably get into a big iFeud over it.

Should I get ready to dig my heels in on one side of this one?

Maybe you'll earn the status someday where a guy who you haven't i-talked to in five years, and who posts three times a year in the baseball forum, comes in to pile on. I'd keep Janssen, Grilli has never closed and he has been prone to meltdowns in the past. Now if you can get Soriano or Putz...

If you are dealing with 28 or 29 man rosters in a keeper league you can't stash Mark Melancon but you can have Storen as a fire and forget fantasy starter. K-Rod and Valverde still out there as well and you'd have to think someone eventually takes a chance with these two. As Ceo3west pointed out, Valverde has looked good in side sessions recently and K-Rod hasn't beaten up a woman in almost three full fiscal quarters. So if a grilli goes down maybe K-Rod gets the call, the closer chase is like that. Kraft and Eephus spend four full weeks of their lives every year chasing saves or the next JJ Putz, this is serious business.

Cook's probably next in line for the A's, but if you're looking to strictly use a MR for what he gives you, I like Doolittle better. Rondon's high BB/9 scares me off him, at least for this year. Kimbrel was similarly wild coming out of the minors (and has since solved the problem), but he was also K'ing 15 per 9 IP, not 10. That Rondon only has 30 IP at AA/AAA is telling, and while the ERA looks good, the low BABIP points to him being more lucky than good.

I don't know who it's going to be, but if Rondon does get it, I don't think he's going to be able to hold it.

Tigers optioned RHP Bruce Rondon to Triple-A Toledo.

Just searched twitter for Rondon and he's getting blasted after today's outing. Many including sports writers calling for his demotion to AAA, sounds like it may happen. Either way, almost no chance he'll be closing for the Tigers next week.
Trying to prove you can read Vinny? Congrats???Ceo3west was right, but now we get the worst closer by committee ever with three really old guys sharing saves. Coke is Leyland's favorite so he will probably get the most ops, then whoever is more effective early on between Benoit and Dotel. Benoit is the best pitcher of the group, not sure if that means anything though.

I've never been able to decide if I wanted a handcuff but guys like Brothers kind of make sense since his ratios are so good. Cook, Jansen and Storen seem like natural handcuffs, but do you really want Mark Melancon? Maybe not.
