2013 Closers (2 Viewers)

Grrrrrr..... Patriots just moved to 7.5 in week 1. I had a half a rack qued up once they paid out the heat (assuming they win).

PSA: This is not the wagering thread.

Jim Henderson off with a hamstring injury. K-Rod in for the one-out SV opportunity rather than Axford.
Gonzalez and Kintzler have been setting up.
Rotoworld had a blurb saying Roenicke said it would be closer by committee to start off....with K-Rod, Gonzalez and Axford.
He used Axford today when they were down 4. Axford didn't give up a run, but he did allow a hit and a walk. I doubt he'll actually get a save opp.

As a Brewers fan...I hope not.

I got Axford back as a throw in for a trade. He's not worth hanging onto at all is he?

Perez left the game today for Cleveland with arm issues against Boston.

Who's the better short term pickup, Joe Smith or Vinny Pestano?

I would stay far away from Pestano. His velocity is down, and he has been pretty bad the past month. I would speculate on Joe Smith.

Anyone in back of Smith and Pestano, any minor league arms? A shoulder concerns me
Cody Allen is tagged as the closer of the future (like maybe next year) and the dark horse in this race. He might even grab a few holds as you wait for Pestano to falter if you have that category.

Tito called Pestano the closer yesterday. Ugh, just spent $21 on Smith. I won't be pursuing Pestano too hard.
The way he's been throwing someone else will be closing by week's end. Whether that's Smith, Shaw, Allen...we'll see. I'd bet on them in that order though, Allen may be the guy for the future but lack of experience may hold him back from getting a shot for now.

Looks like Huston Street is going to be placed on DL. I would run to pick up Luke Gregerson. And also looks like Betencourt possible to DL, per his father (???), Rex Brothers makes a nice pick up.

For those monitoring the Brewers closer situation, F Rod was very fortunate to get a save today. Looked very hittable, gave up a homer to Galvis. Almost gave up another one. And if not for the umpire doing his best Earl Hebner impersonation, he would have blown the save. Rodriguez tried to pick off Kendrick at second base, Jean Segurra dropped the ball, but the ump called the runner out anyway. Next batter hit what would have been a game tying double.

With the way Gregerson has been pitching this year, he should already be on a roster.

Dale Thayer and his beard are the darkhorse candidates.

who would you take out of the two?

Very tough call. Both should put up solid numbers. I would lean towards Gregerson. It would also depend on each closer's long term health prognosis.

I drafted him in my NL only league, but he was out there in my 12 team league.

Carter Capps is a good pickup if you miss out on Gregerson and Brothers. Eric Wedge isn't a numbers guy but even he must have noticed Tom Wilhelmsen has been pretty ineffective lately.

Someone dropped Gregerson in my B&M league the other day but I can't get him until Friday. I wonder how much he's worth given that Street might be back a week to ten days after I pick him up? I guess I could keep him for the rest of the season for the ratios and K's. Dunno.

Did grab Capps in a league I have Wilhelmsen, he looks terrible.

I'm probably going to spend my last dollar on either Gregerson or Brothers.

Not sure who to prioritize first, as they both seem equal in value to me, but I think I'll go with Gregerson because of Street's injury history and with the calf being a re-injury from last season.

Going Capps as a fallback, though I wish Furbush would be next in line, since I've already got Fister on the roster.

What do you guys see for Aroldis Chapman now that he's officially the closer?Projections? Rank? Wondering if he can be a sneaky grab in a draft tonight.
I dont know about sneaky unless guys just arent paying attention. Goes near the top of the list imo
This is more than laid back, hoping a few guys missed the news and I can grab him after half the league (4-5/10) takes a RP depending on spot. If not, any suggestions for mid-later RP's in a 5x5? VERY limited transactions during the year so may not be able to pick up guys as they step up during the year.
Grilli and janssen are both good pitchers that should thrive in the closer role.
Grilli has a career ERA of 4.34 and a WHIP of 1.413. He's 36 and has 5 career saves. Now, he's coming off two good years (had a great year last year, though that K-rate is not typical for him and his GB/FB ratio was way below career norms) and perhaps he's a late bloomer, but this guy has been garbage for the bulk of his time in the majors. I'm not seeing 'thrive' but maybe I'm wrong.
youre wrong
