2013 Closers (1 Viewer)

Valverde's days are numbered but the Tigers don't have a lot of good options. the best is Benoit but he's so good in the 8th it's really hard to move him off of that. Rondon still walking too many guys but I think he's gonna get a call sooner than later, Valverde is likely on the juice as his fastball is 95 one night and 91 the next. I gotta feeling these guys know when tests are coming within reason, Valverde is ####.

Why still no word on Brian Wilson?
Sabean came out a few weeks ago and said he was going to throw for teams at or around the ASB. Seems like he is still getting back in shape but also seems like he isn't in a hurry and probably wants to start a bidding war or wait for a situation to become desperate.

Anyone keeping up with Frieri's usage? They were playing games with the closer spot a few weeks back, but has he been getting all the save ops since?

I certainly hope Jansen preforms to Balco's expectations, to me he's had some issues this year and I still worry about his ticker in a keeper. I would say Jansen over Wilhelmsen also though, Willy has been really shaky this year and the M's probably won't win as many as the Dodgers.

Interesting situation in Milwaukee. They want K-Rod to get to 300, so are leaving him as the closer for now (he's at 298), even with Henderson healthy. As a result, Henderson comes in to pitch the 8th with a one run lead vs. Miami and gives up a 2-run shot, I wonder if Rodriguez may have the job a bit longer. Axford is at about 15 IP without giving up an earned run as well.

I don't think Axford is a threat at all for 9th inning duties. Looks like Brewers want to use him in low leverage situations. Seems to be doing fine in that role. But I wouldn't be surprised at all if K-Rod takes a permanent hold on the job at some point.

Rodriguez would be a better trade chip at the deadline. The Brewers aren't going anywhere this year. As long as K-rod is pitching well, they might as well build up whatever value he has.

Jansen officially in as Doyers closer.
I assume it's safe to drop League at this point? He's terrible enough that he will not win the job back?
Dumped him in a 25 keeper 40 man roster league if it means anything. Picked up Alex Torres for K's. Only way he gets the job again is ineffectiveness or injury to Jansen and even then the way he has pitched he may not be the first call. See, John Axford.

In the Tigers thread, someone mentioned putting Rondon at setup and having Benoit close, which I think is a pretty good idea. Brian Wilson might also be viable, for the right price.

What the hell is going on in SEA?

I think I'll stick with Perez for a little longer, but this doesn't look promising.
They never had anything behind Wilhelmsen. Pryor was it and he's been hurt. Capps emerged, but when people took notice he caved. Oliver Perez is just being Oliver Perez. Had to know diving into that well would be playing with fire.

I claimed Furbush over night. Not because I think he'll close, but he could steal some lefty-heavy save opp's. Has always been a high K pitcher and while the BB's are up this year they've come down a bit recently after a rocky start. He had the blow up vs. LA Monday but those were his first runs given up since May 20. 13 K:5 BB over 11 1/3 IP since May 20. 2.72/0.95 with 53 K:16 BB over 46 1/3 IP's last year. You never know

Okay, I'm dumping Valverde. Who are some non-closers I should target who have a shot at becoming a closer? Best closer available now is Cishek. I'll pick him up, but woof.

Bailey not good. Farrell considering a temporary closer change. I'd grab Tazawa again (not that I ever dropped him),
Could be Tazawa, but it also could be Andrew Miller. He's more shaky, but he was already up and throwing behind Bailey last night when Peralta hit the walkoff.

I grabbed both, just in case.

Cishek had been money lately

Valverde DFA...grab Benoit for now if available...Rondon could get the call too

Somebody else already had Koji. I've got Bailey and Tazawa, and I'll need to cut one. Gotta cut Tazawa right?

I'm figuring the most likely scenario is that Koji runs with it for much of the rest of the season with Bailey maybe getting another crack at it later this year, if he gets right. Not that I have any reason to think I have any idea what'll happen.

Anything to see with Tommy Hunter?

He got the 2 inning save in a 1-run game on Friday when Johnson hadn't pitched since Wednesday (BS).

Hunter clearly the #2 guy for saves in Baltimore. Buck wants to give Johnson some rest in high leverage situations I think, he has 34 save ops already this year.

i think we should fire up the closer hot stove groupthink

Closers I think may get moved

Papelbon - Phi

I'd like to think Bastardo would take over if the Philles cool off

Veras - Hou

Cisnero? Wright?

Kevin Gregg - ChC

Svuem recently said they may try rookie Blake Parker (2.19era/0.65whip 13k/12.1in) if Gregg is moved. They also have James Russell who has been good. Also a possibility is Strop who has closed before, right?

K-Rod - Mil

I would assume Henderson steps into the role, but I could also see Axford take the job back if hes not moved. Any 3 of these guys might get traded.

Street - SD

I dont see him getting moved after signing his extension, but you never know. Gregerson would step in, but he may also get traded.

Cishek- Mia

Not sure if they will move him either, but if they do AJ Ramos? Dunn, though i think he's their loogy

Wilhelmsen - Sea

I heard something about somebody kicking the tires on Olly Perez too, so other than Perez it might be Carter Capps?

It isn't going to be Russell in Chicago, they have no alternatives for lefty specialist. In my deep league I have Parker and Cisnero stashed.

Scratch Carter Capps. Sent down today.
For that weird stretch in SEA, when Whilhelmsen apparently wasn't the closer, nobody was getting any save opps at all, and some of us bit the bullet on O.Perez, fangraphs kept listing Medina as the closer. I'm still not sure why, but maybe he's the guy to speculate on there if Whilhelmsen is traded.

Geez you guys have room to stash 2 potential closers? I guess in leagues with innings limits that's more possible. Would you hold onto Bell over a stash?

Yeah, in leagues without IP limits I wouldn't be doing this. I try to get ahead with IP limits, so I can dump all of the replacement level starters for potential closers this time of year.

getting offered Kevin Gregg for beans (Charlie Morton). pretty sure Gregg will be traded, though, and he would only help me in the NL. What rumors are you hearing about where he'll end up?

Why do I keep seeing speculation that Chris Perez will be traded? The Indians are 1.5 games out of first place.

Because they have Allen, Pestano and Smith at the back end. Perez has one more year left on team control and they have other guys ready IMO, I can see him getting moved for the right return.

No one will offer what the Indians demand and something is wrong with pestano. If he is traded it will be in December.
