2013 Official Dallas Cowboys Thread (1 Viewer)

Dont know much about Wilcox. Just moved to safety in 2012 though. That a smart pick?

Would have liked to see them get a RB there since they passed on so many good safeties for a damn C and TE.

He was the highest ranked safety left on a few sites I saw. Wish they would have went Saf much earlier but he reads like quite an athlete., played RB and WR also. He was who I was hoping they would pick when they took Williams, so I guess it worked out....hopefully

This is one draft that we will look at a number of top players being drafted right behind our picks .

Wilcox here is good ........other than that I'm puzzled.

Moving on -

Frederick - my buddy asked why we drafted a center and my answer was that we need a guy who isn't launching the ball over Romos head every fifth play.

Escobar - Would have rather gone with another linemen or defense but I'm good with another TE - Witten isn't getting any younger but can groom this guy. He's HUGE and has great hands.

Terrance Williams - Personally I love the pick. Got the most productive NFL ready receiver in the draft.

Wilcox - Please Lord, let him be the real deal. We've needed a quality safety since Roy Williams got fat. I'd be happy if we drafted another 5 safeties as long as they aren't named Sensenbaugh.

I was hoping for another interior OL but I do like the help we got on that side of the ball assuming all 3 guys can contribute immediately. I like the TE as he seems like a guy that create match-up problems for the D. Pick your poison as long as Romo isn't running for his life which will be the bottom line issue. If Travis can come in and stabilize the middle we could be quite potent on offense.

I wouldn't consider Williams the most "NFL ready" WR, why do you think this? I'd think that both Keenan Allen and Quinton Patton are more "NFL ready"

I see him in a similar vein as the guys you mentioned w/o the injury concerns.

Jerry Jones seems like he has no clue what he is doing. SF stole the #19 pick or whatever it was.

I've been out all night and just got in to see what happened. I'm incredulous about the 2nd round pick. Just stunned. What. The. F###. He's not fast. And he can't block. Pick 47. Seriously? When so many quality OL and DL are on the board? Wow, just wow.

I do think the 3rd round picks make sense. In a vacuum. This team is still deficient on both lines. They will not win unless and until that is fixed.

I had come around on the Frederick pick. They completely lost me with Escobar. Whatever. At least I now will have low expectations and won't get so pissed off when they lose.

Maybe I'll feel differently tomorrow. Sure disappointed not to come away with someone weighing at least 280 pounds today.

I didn't catch the author of that article. Was it Stephen or Jerry?

<_<
Yeah, that article was crap. Hanna played well down the stretch when he got snaps. Regardless of how much better Escobar is, that pick was a total luxury pick they couldn't afford IMO. Also nonsense to say they only had 3 reliable pass catchers. Dwayne Harris looked good to me- don't recall any drops there and he showed some play-making ability. I'm guessing the pick of Williams is more about Austin's injury troubles than anything else. Still another luxury pick. Build the foundation, they could have snagged very good WR's later in the draft. There are some very good WR's left. William's was taken way too high with their other needs.

I agree that in a vacuum, I like this drat.

C- Center has been one of your biggest needs of the draft, had we drafted a DL at 31 and taken this guy in the 2nd, this would have been one of the most solid drafts we have had in years. The way it shuffled out, this guy is still a man, a big, road grading man. The O-line will be better and will have a little depth now.

TE- complete luxury pick, not necessary. I love the guy though and some "experts" have said he has the potential to be the best TE of this draft. Witten is getting older and Hanna will be teamed up with this guy, not forgotten hopefully.

WR- this was the best pick of the Cowboys draft without question. This guy will be a star and Romo will hopefully use him the way he used Laurent Robinson. Witten, Bryant, Austin, and Williams all on the field at one time could be a matchup nightmare.

S- Really didnt know that much about the guy but the more I read, the more I like.

4th round- guard would be nice or a RB. There are still 3-4 quality RB left on the board. I dont see the point in grabbing a 4-3 DL or a OL-T at this point in the draft, maybe just for depth I guess. We have the option to grab a real quality QB to sit with a clipboard and learn. I like Landry Jones or the Arkansas kid myself but if Nassib is there, you have to grab him. Nassib reminds me a little of Romo too. Wouldnt hate that pick.

I still have a feeling the Cowboys have all along had Eric WInston on the back burner. I really liked the raw talent of Parnell last year when he was rotating with Free. I wouldnt mind seeing them flat out cut Free depending on the cap ramifications, sign Eric Winston and let Parnell grow behind him.

We did sign Allen in free agency. The only other issue I see is what to do about DL depth. Rat isnt young. No real depth there. Maybe some undrafted free agents.

Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama: I really thought Williams was going to be San Francisco’s pick at No. 34 overall. Instead, the 49ers traded down, took Tank Carradine at 40 and Williams kept dropping out of the top three rounds. He’ll be a steal on Day 3, as a player that can hold up at nose tackle or slide out to DT in a 4-3 or DE in a 3-4.

Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA: Truth be told, I’m stunned Franklin made it to Saturday — almost as surprised Knile Davis was the only running back taken in Round 3. Franklin runs with authority. It would not surprise me one bit if he still turns out to be the most productive rookie RB.

Barrett Jones, C/G, Alabama: Like with the cornerback position, there are at least a handful of linemen who could play key roles in 2013. Jones plays above his physical gifts, even if he’ll get beat from time to time. He moved all over Alabama’s line, so that versatility ought to help. Ohio State tackle Reid Fragel is another lineman who should be an early pick on Day 3.
These are the three guys I want for the Cowboys. If they can get these three guys, I would give this draft a higher grade. Still gives us the chance to take a guy to groom as a QB.

I would love to see Williams or Jones at 114

Go RB at 151 - big bruiser in between the tackles to relieve Murray

Go DL/OL-best left

Agree with all the above.

Would like to draft a QB, as well. Not a Landry guy, but sure...that's fine. Prefer Bray or Wilson. QB run starts in 4th, I think. With 6th rounder, Renfree would be solid, imo.

Love our last 2 picks. I don't think it even remotely corrects the first round disaster, followed by an even worse decision to get Escobar.

On balance, I give the first 2 days a C-. Those last 2 picks elevate us from what would, otherwise, have been a big fat F.

Jones: Cowboys 'to shake it up' with Gavin EscobarBy Kareem Copeland

Around the League Writer

Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones is making offensive calls now.

The Cowboys selected San Diego State tight end Gavin Escobar in the second round and demanded the coaching staff get him involved. The New England Patriots have been the standard-bearer in the NFL when it comes to featuring a two tight end set.

Jones sees similar possibilities with Escobar and Jason Witten.

"You saw him coming," Jones said, via the Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill. "(Now) are we all resolved to doing it different relative to injecting that influence in this offense? Don't come in here with same old, same old.

"I took a roll call and said if we (go) this route with the tight end we are going to shake it up around here relative to what we are doing. It's going to be different. I joked we are going to pass the paper around and we are all going to sign it. We are going to be different."

Why the ultimatum with Escobar? The Cowboys have been down this road before. They drafted Anthony Fasano in 2006 and he had 28 receptions and a touchdown in two years. Fasano went to the Dolphins in 2008 and started every game he's played in Miami.

Dallas drafted Martellus Bennett in 2008 and he topped out at 33 receptions (2010) and four touchdowns (2008). Those four rookie scores were his only touchdowns in four seasons. Bennett signed with the New York Giants before the 2012 season and had a career-high 55 catches and five touchdowns.

Both Fasano and Bennett were second-round picks. Jones hopes the third time will be different. In fact, he's demanding it.

Side note: Jones blamed Bennett for some of his low production, "he didn't show." Bennett tweeted "LOL" to Hill.

I like the Frederick pick. Versatility on the interior O-line. Strong, smart, mean.........rockin the beard.......maybe bring some tude to the line.

Escobar.......just like most I was left scratchin my head. Another high pick on a TE.........And this guy cant block! He's not strong, he's slow. At least he's got ball skills. Jerrah's already squwakin about him....ugggggg!!

Williams looks like the real deal. Could be a solid pick for us.

Wilcox......love his aggression on the field. He looks like he could develop into a real playmaker in the NFL......was hopin for Cyprien.

We're going to a 4-3 right? Where's the D-linemen? WIsh they woulda grabbed one instead of a TE in the 2nd

Completely agree. That's exactly what Witten is.

Jerry must be reallllllly confident in the DL to go CB/Nickel here at 114

Not sure why we didn't like a DT or RB there???

Too bad Jones went to St. Louis just ahead of us. Really thought he would have been a great fit and versatile on the O line.

I am wondering if the new rule last April/May about increasing rosters from 80 to 90 somehow has factored into this draft. Everyone went in thinking OL and DL for maybe 3 picks in this draft right? Obviously this could just be Jerrah killing us but is it possible that with the added development of 10 players per team until cuts begin, that there will be a more developed pool of cast-offs that could fill a need albeit of the back-up variety? I realize I am reaching here but it certainly could help teams who are thin in a particular area considering 320 more players are now actively training and developing on NFL rosters prior to their ultimate exit. Or should I just grab another beer?

It does seem that Ddallas has been going off their board in rounds 3 and 4. Solid picks. Potential contributors all.

Having slept on it, I still don't think much of the TE pick. We can only hope he's as good as Dallas' purported board had him. ANd that he can learn to block

I'll pick either J. Randle RB Okie ST or DeVonte Holloman OLB South Carolina with their next pick. I would pick OL or DL but that doesn't seem to be in the cards.

You got your wish. Randle is a Cowboy. Seems like a great combination of value and need filling. Very, very good pick on initial review

He runs down hill that's for damn sure. Not a bad pick for 5th rd IMO. I'll take it!!!

I avoid you guys because of all the negativity, and here I'm hate hate hating this draft. Trying not to vent. :sigh:
Don't hate, have a brewsky and bask in the bliss of knowing we have 3 new weapons on offense, an anchor on the OL whether it be at C or OG, and 2 physical players in the secondary for Kiffin to utilize in nickel/dime packages as well as special teams contributors. There, you're welcome. Also, we have not even gotten to undrafted free agent diamonds in the rough. It's all good, we're going to be better this year.

How about Jeff Baca OG from UCLA here? I realize we are not going OL or DL for some reason but I will throw Baca out there and my wild card is Zac Dysert QB Miami OH.

The lack of DL or additional OL help is surprising given the need.

I understand that there might be a hidden gem(Winston) in Free Agency,

but I'm not confident he'll be around until June when we drop Free.

Here's hoping we have that master plan.
