With crappy NFL teams dragging the ratio down, this may be true. However, when you are the SIX TIME SUPERBOWL WINNING PITTSBURGH STEELERS, you hit on over 50% of 4th round picks.

They should get 2 3rd round comp picks next year
How's that work?
Some math "magic" of losing a guy in FA, where he was drafted and the new contract. So they should get a 3rd for Mendenhall and a 3rd for Wallace. No guarantee though. Radio guys said they should also get a 4th and maybe another 4th.
Sorry, unnecessary smarm on my part. I generally know how it works, I just seriously doubt we get a 3rd for Mendy. Feels more like a 5th.

Oh. I think him being a former 1st rounder and his years of service play into it. Could be a 3rd, I'd think at least a 4th. Wallace gets a 3rd and Lewis gets a 4th.

Poyer, Reddick or Holloman wouldn't look terrible here. Rodgers or Swope at WR wouldn't either(I know they won't touch DR though).

So the Steelers went with another CB who can't catch the ball.

His ball skills also leave much to be desired. Hawthorne struggles to finish interceptions and will often drop passes that hit his hands.

That's basically a requirement for LeBeau CBs. This guy ticks off all of the necessary items:

- Biggish

- Fast

- Good tackler

- Nice read/react ability

- Absolutely no hands

From walterfootball.com:

Terry Hawthorne, CB, Illinois
Height: 6-0. Weight: 195.
40 Time: 4.44.
Projected Round (2013): 4-5.

4/24/13: Hawthorne was one of the best players on the field at the East-West Shrine. He did very well in man coverage and was physical. Hawthorne also showed more ball skills than previously thought. The strong week should help him on draft day.

Hawthorne followed that up with a good Combine and ran faster than expected. He is a sleeper corner who could turn into a steal.

Aside from a rough game against Louisiana Tech's Quinton Patton, Hawthorne was playing well in 2012 until he suffered a concussion against Wisconsin. He was knocked unconscious and was taken off the field in an ambulance. Hawthorne was having a tremendous outing against Badgers cornerback Jared Abbrederis, a speedy receiver who is a tough coverage matchup.

Hawthorne returned to action after missing one game. He had 44 tackles and six passes broken up this season. Hawthorne also averaged 22 yards per kick return.

Rd 6 pick:

JUSTIN BROWN WR, Oklahoma
HT: 6-3 WT: 209

STRENGTHS - Brown gets a clean release off the LOS and uses his hands quickly in order to break from jam coverage. He has good hands and is able to make some tough catches. Brown is stronger than he looks on tape and can be a tough guy to bring down, enabling him to gain a couple of extra yards. When asked to block he does show and does so well. He shows very good blocking technique without penalty and blocks with effort.

WEAKNESSES - Brown's route running will need to become more crisp and tends to round his cuts which enable the DB/LB to maintain coverage and not bite on head fakes. He is not very quick and does not show a great deal of speed and therefore is unable to create much separation. When he catches the ball he does not show the ability to catch and turn quickly and therefore is unable to turn up the field with great success.

SUMMARY - Brown was a very good receiver in his first season at Oklahoma after transferring from Penn State. He has dependable hands and can go and make the tough catches. He has quick hands and is able to separate enough off of jam coverage, however he does not have the quickness / speed or footwork to create enough separation to be a consistent enough deep threat. Brown is not afraid to go over the middle, however he is not able to turn off the catch quickly enough to get up the field with great success. His route running suffers due to his inability to make clean cuts and head fakes combined with his lack of quickness. Brown plays stronger than he looks on tape and he has the ability to gain the few extra yards by keeping his legs moving and can be difficult to bring down at times. He is a solid blocker in the open field and will block with a great deal of effort and does not seem to give up. Overall, Brown is a very solid pass catcher, who plays with effort. However, he does not have the elite athletic ability to have much success at the next level.

Apparently this guy was getting death threats for leaving Penn State in the wake of the scandal. Makes me wonder it Pennsylvania is the best place for him to go back to.

Funny it keeps saying a weakness of his is that he's not quick. I read his shuttle and his ten yard splits were very fast. Good 6th round pick IMO.

Hopefully with his new NFL salary he can hire someone to kill whoever it is that cares that much about college football.

@evansilva: Mayock quote on new #Steelers ILB Vince Williams: "As soon as he steps on the field he just starts coming downhill and hitting people."

Hard not to be pretty damn happy with the front offices draft outcome.
i don't know, i am leaning towards an albeit premature B- grade. Jarvis Jones looks like an immediate starter. But Bell doesn't feel like much of an upgrade from Jonathan Dwyer. Marcus Wheaton will take a little while to settle into a significant role, probably a WR#3 at best. The new safety is intriguing but with size issues. The QB pick was a throwaway that i don't understand. The rest of the picks are a crapshoot imo. So we're looking at one solid starter, maybe even a playmaker in Jones, some role players and some question marks.

Thanks, couldn't remember Capizzi's name. I am a season ticketholder for the Las Vegas Locomotives, can't believe I didn't recognize him with all the games I've been to. :fishy:

Going through some of these UDFA's to see if there's anything interesting.

"DT Brian Arnfelt stole the show (pro day). 38 on 225, with 4.43 short shuttle, 4.81 40, 31 vert, at 6'4.75" and 303."

Draft Zone Spotlight: Alan Baxter, LB/DE Northern Illinois University

The 6’0, 240 pound linebacker/defensive end for the Huskies is probably one of the most underrated players in this class. Baxter should have been invited to numerous All Star Games, but was some reason passed on. Baxter has a great edge burst and is very talented. I expect him to turn heads at his pro day. The kid is tough, he posted 152 career tackles in addition to 24.5 sacks in the past 2 years at NIU. Baxter reminds some NFL scouts of Elvis Dumervil. He was First team All Mac and was part of the All-Mac Academic team as well. Expect big things from Alan Baxter.

Nice draft for the Steelers.
Yep, although saying "nice draft for the Steelers" is like saying "water is wet".

Here's the thing, though - it's not just drafting that makes a team like Pittsburgh consistently good (& let's face it, every team has picks that don't pan out). They also self-scout as well as anyone. They are willing to let a guy walk if he's not worth what someone else is willing to pay.

Other organizations who do this well? Pats, Ravens, Packers, Colts, NYG.

Hmmm......

Nik Embernate, OG SDSU

HGT: 6-4 WGT: 300

Embernate has started 45 games dating back to the 4th game of his true-freshman year. Embernate is a big reason why in 2010 and 2011, San Diego St. posted consecutive seasons of 2,000yds rushing, lead by running back, Ronnie Hillman( Denver Broncos). Embernate has been recognized as a pre-season 1st team All-Mountain West offensive lineman. Embernate had a solid senior Season, that saw him gain 1st team All-Mountain West honors

PROS:

Embernate has good frame, could easily add fifteen pounds of muscle and it won’t slow him down. Shows good athleticism and good feet which stands out on every film I’ve watched of him. Has experience playing right tackle because of injury. Embernate is a mauler in the run-game. In zone schemes he shows the ability to get push at the point of attack and finish blocks and also shows the ability to come off on 2nd level defenders when he is zone combo blocking. Embernate is an outstanding puller that finishes defenders once engaged. Shows a nasty streak which you like to see. Very good in space, shows he can dip his hips and explode on a sitting defender in space or he can change directions and cut when a defender is moving in space. Delivers a solid punch in pass-protection and plays with overall violent hands! Shows he take away the inside in pass-protection and looks comfortable in his pass-demeanor. Does a good job working with the offensive tackle in passing off line games. And does a good job at pointing out potential blitz.

CONS:

Would like to see Embarnate have better pad level, plays way to high and tries to rely on his strength to finish defenders, instead of leverage. At times he narrows his base on contact which makes him fall off of blocks. Needs to work on hand placement, at times his hands slip outside the frame. Needs to play with more knee bend in his pass-demeanor. At times can be more patient in pass protection. Although I like his nasty mean streak, Embernate has to be careful on blocking defenseless defenders behind the play as it will lead to personal fouls.

NOTES:

The upside I see from Nik Embernate is off the chart. He has some tools that any coach would like to polish with Next-level coaching. Embernate’s skill set and nasty mindset reminds me of Richie Incognito (Miami Dolphins). Embernate may be a sleeper in the 2013 NFL Draft to some, but he has been on my radar for a while. As I project down the road, Nik Embernate will be perfect in any scheme, Zone or Power. Embernate may even be a Center in the NFL. Embernate was not invited to the combine, but I think with a solid pro-day, Embernate could move in to a mid-round pick.

Little highlight reel. Certainly can pull.
