*** 2013 Official Pittsburgh Steelers Off & ON Season Thread *** (1 Viewer)

So, of our 6 top-3 picks the last two years, half of them have suffered pre-season injuries that have either essentially cost them their rookie seasons and/or could threaten their entire careers. Awesome.

I am so glad we removed Eddie Lacy from our draft board because of injury concerns.

####ing stupid. Just like fantasy, you gotta go BPA to win. Steelers may regret this pick/who they passed on for a loooong time.

Shot in the dark...

But with the Bell injury, does this potentially put FAs like McGahee, Wells, Benson, and possibly Turner on the Steelers radar?

Bouchette: Bell has ligament tear in his foot. Will miss up to 6 weeks

Not career or even season ending.

I wouldnt mind giving any of them a shot besides Turner. Id especially like to see McGahee if he's back from the knee.

It must be "only" a partial tear then if they arent doing surgery. Even then, Id be shocked if here back in 6 weeks. I dont know if Bouchette phrased that wrong, but Id think at least 6 weeks with this more likely being an 8-10 week injury if everything goes right.

Speath required surgery and he's 8-10 weeks.

If Blount/Ridley doesn't make final cuts in N.E.? Who else could be worthwhile as a Turk revival? I can't think of anyone else that is likely to be a FA that I'd take over Redman or Dwyer (I think Dwyer is actually looking decent right now, and LSH would pair nicely with).

If McGahee has anything left, he could be a very nice one year fix. Really worried that this could be a repeat 8-8 or even 6-10 season if anything else goes wrong. With the line playing the way it did last game, Ben could very well miss some more time this year.

Not all of these lis franc injuries and/or surgeries are the same though. I just have trouble seeing that Bell has a torn ligament with the dreaded LF, being back in at most 6 weeks. I think it was in the Bell thread here where people linked a lot of info on lis franc injuries, surgeries, healing times, etc and at least one said that for non-surgical DLF's, you are in a non weight bearing boot for 6 weeks. That tells me he isnt running out onto Heinz field in less than 6 weeks, or "up to 6 weeks".

ETA: I'll be glad if he can, and he's 100%, but Id be shocked if that ends up happening.

I take it you meant Blount or Bolden. I dont know about Blount, I guess he's worth a shot just to see. Hard to say with Bolden, him looking good in limited time last year could be just as much the Pats OL/Brady/offense as his talent.

I thought McGahee looked very good his 2 years in DEN. I think he definitely has something left, if that knee is good. Everything Ive read says it is, he feels good, and has stayed in shape.

I think we are in for a long dismal season Steeler fans. I hope I'm wrong but wow, this is hard to watch. That Oline may actually be worse than last year.
If Heath Miller can start the season, that will make a big difference.

I hope.
What is the status of Miller? Any word on if he'll be ready for the opener or how soon after that?
He's coming along well. Would be surprised if he's ready week 1 and also surprised if not ready by week 4. He's on schedule to start practicing the week before week 1.

EXACTLY

Like I said on draft night and will continue to say until proven otherwise, passing on Lacy was a mistake regardless of the Bell injury. Now it stings even more.

Yes, because Lacy has been the picture of health through their camp. Steelers were concerned about his toe and hamstring and guess what? Lacy missed time because of his hamstring. The Steelers weren't the only team to pass on Lacy and he ended up being the 4th rb taken. Typical Steelers fans. If they had taken him and he missed time in camp like he has in GB there'd be #####ing about why they took him when they knew the injury history.

Tomlin "optimistic" regarding Bell's foot injury
August 22, 2013 12:59 pm

By Gerry Dulac / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Coach Mike Tomlin said today that rookie running back Le'Veon Bell has a mid-foot sprain in his right foot, but the injury is not as severe as initially feared and he is "optimistic and encouraged" how Bell's foot has responded.

Tomlin said Bell would not play in Saturday night's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Heinz Field, but would not speculate on a possible return date.

But he said Bell does not need surgery and that the injury is not a Lisfranc sprain similar to the one incurred tight end Matt Spaeth two weeks ago. Spaeth had surgery to repair the tear and will be out at least eight to 10 weeks.

"We are optimistic and encouraged how it has developed over the last 48 and 72 hours, doing some things without discomfort," Tomlin said. "All those things are positive."

"We don't have a long range schedule [for his return]. We'll treat it conservatively with rehab and declare him out this week. But in the big scheme of things, that is encouraging news."

Asked if Bell would be ready for the regular-season opener against Tennessee, Tomlin said, "I hadn't asked. It's just great to hear that it is what it is. It's perking up day by day."

Bell, the team's No. 2 draft choice, was injured on the fifth play of the first series in Monday night's preseason loss to the Washington Redskins and did not return.

Tomlin said he is "not concerned at all" that Bell has been injured three times already in training camp.

"You play football, you get hurt," he said. "It's part of it."

Without him, the Steelers will have to rely on the same two backs as they did last season when Rashard Mendenhall was hurt -- Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer.

However, Tomlin did not say who would start against the Chiefs because Redman is still working his way back from a stinger that kept him out of the game against the Redskins.

"We'll watch their participation (in practice) and make that determination at the 11th hour," Tomlin said.

It is waayyyy too eary to know if taking Bell instead of Lacy was a mistake. You have to wait at least another week to make that kind of statement with any kind of certainty.

Oh man, this is very encouraging. Looks like it isn't a Lisfranc injury - sounds like it might be more like Jamaal Charles' injury. I wouldn't be shocked to see him playing by week 2.

I'm calling it now. Bell will be out of the league by week 4!

You guys are crazy. Did you see Lacy's spin move?

In all honesty, I am a little worried about the line.

Nope, not one bit

I thought Lacy was the better pick PERIOD....like I said "regardless of the Bell injury".

Mendenhall had a nice spin move too and where is he now? Yeah, that's right. Pittsburgh southwest!

Yep, same with me. And based on what I recall reading, the Steelers removed him from their board because of his toe surgery, not a hamstring or anything else. The same toe surgery Lacy had before last season, didnt bother him all last season, and to me he looked like the same Lacy.

This is very promising news today on Bell's foot injury though. I just hope he and/or the staff dont make him push it before he's ready to. If were in playoff contention last in the season, he'll be much more useful then as opposed to bringing him back say week 3 instead of week 4.

Uh... yeah... I meant Bolden. I think Blount is easily more talented than Redman or Dwyer. We may not get first dibs on him if he hits the wire though.

On the bright side, Shamarko Thomas looks like a future beast at safety (immediate upgrade to Mundy), and Jarvis Jones looks like he'll be pretty nasty one year and 10 pounds later. And Worilds looks huge! Foote however, has turned into another way to call a cat a kitten.

Do what? Not sure what was meant on Foote. Dude wins about every athletic challenge versus the rest of the team. Total competitor and very smart at his position. His best days might be almost behind him but he's still much better than anyone behind him.

Shamarko is a very talented player and a draft steal...as long as he can avoid knocking himself out.

Foote was getting blown 10 yards off the LOS on my TV. Whenever I saw him take on a lineman, it looked like he was on roller skates.

Ok. Who do they have that's better? And when I say that, they have some very talented MLBs. Foote was essentially their leading tackler last year. And he'll be a top tackler again this year. He's where his assignment says he should be 99% of the time.

Steelers acquired RB Felix Jones from the Eagles in exchange for LB Adrian Robinson.

With the addition of Jones, I'd think its very safe to say that Batch will get cut.

Would they need to cut another RB (Dwyer?).

good to get something for Robinson since they have more good linebackers than they can keep but I would have preferred a lineman.

I think Felix is an equal or lesser LSH. I'm betting that this signing means LSH gets about 50% of the RB touches come week 1, and that they wanted insurance in case he gets hurt. How many RBs have been on the 53 since Tomlin took over? 4? 5?

Usually 4 and the 5th is a FB. I think they keep 5 (plus a FB) since Bell will have to be on the 53 but won't play (apparently) the first week or so. So, Bell, LSH, Jones (if he makes the cut), Redman and Dwyer plus Johnson. Once Bell is healthy...

We have enough issues with this team that we don't need an awful special teams and with Danny Smith as the new coach they have regressed which is saying something since it wasn't that special to begin with.

Danny Smith shouldve been fired 2 weeks ago. Our ST is so bad its a joke.

15 cut today for the roster trim to 75, a couple moves of note:

Cut/Waived: Baron Batch, Stevenson Sylvester, DeMarcus Van Dyke, David Gilreath, John Parker Wilson

to PUP: Sean Spence

Kind of surprised about Sylvester.

Sylvester is a surprise. Spence going on the PUP instead of IR could be a good sign.

Think it shows the depth at lb they have and what they think of the young guys like Wilson, Williams and Baxter. He probably also has to "thank" Wheaton (though it was an accident) for putting him out and giving some of those guys a chance to shine. Them letting Sylvester go this early is a nice move though since it gives him a better chance to hook up elsewhere.
