Nonsense. Donnie Shell is not a rookie. ;)

All seriousness aside, I do think Shamarko is going to get plenty of P/T. As Hank said, Polamalu & Clark are not paragons of health and the depth behind them is putrid. I fully expect Shamarko to be ahead of DaMon Cromartie-Smith and Robert Golden on the depth chart by the start of the season if he isn't already there now.
You think he's first off the bench behind both Polamalu and Clark?

I hope you are right, but I see Golden getting snaps at the FS spot over Thomas if one of the starters goes down, at least in base sets. The way Troy moves around it's definitely tough to identify who's SS vs FS on some snaps, but I think from a simple depth chart perspective Thomas is most likely Troy's direct back-up with Golden behind Clark.

In 3-3-5 packages, I can see him playing the 5th DB role out of the gate depending on down and distance. Probably switches out for Brown on more traditional nickel downs.

Golden is definitely first in line at this point.

According to Wexell's twitter, the sum of the cap hit for all the Steelers' rookie contracts this year will be $1.63M. That leaves us with roughly $3.5M in space after Colon's money is off the books.

Whatcha wanna get?

I could handle an older Vet in the inside for a year or two.... like Nick Barnett or Rocky McIntosh. But a very low amount.

And S Kerry Rhodes, depending on circumstances.

I read a week or so ago they're certain to sign breaston after June 1. that would cut into that space a little. plax would be a goner for sure ( as if he's not already).

I'm fine with this as long as they're not paying more for Breaston than Plax is (was?) scheduuled to get. If there's any substantial difference in price, I want the cheaper guy.Does Eric Winston have a job yet? Similar deal with Winston/Starks as I said about Breaston/Plax. I'm not opposed to either of them being on the team but I'm not sure the talent level between them warrants paying one more vs the other.

Breaston couldn't get balls in the chiefs last year. His knees are pretty done. If rather get Brandon Lloyd ....

I think Starks is heading to Arizona or San Diego. Winston has had some visits, but none in Pittsburgh.

Max Starks
Will be VERY surprised if that happens. Steelers seem to want to move on from Max. Starks himself intimated that they told him as much("not in so many words" etc).
Agreed. I think they have moved on from Hampton as well. Literally trimming the fat this off season.

I still think Ahmad Bradshaw is in the mix for a deal.

Other than that they will likely be waiting for camp cuts to see what shakes loose.

I agree about the "moving on" stuff. Seems like the Steelers are just ready to turn the page on "the old core," sans Ben(Kiesel, Clark and Polamalu will probably be following soon. Heath's knee may drive him out earlier than it would have otherwise, etc).

As for Bradshaw, I think while the Steelers may still have some interest in him I doubt he has much interest in them after they drafted Bell and basically anointed him the starter/picked up LS-H within 48 hours.

I expect he'd rather go someplace less crowded, or at least someplace where he thinks the coaches think he is clearly the best back on the roster(St. Louis? No idea). Not sure that would be the case in Pittsburgh now(the coaches thinking that, that is).

Backup S, TE, MLB or NT should be top priority for the Steelers with the extra $3.5M.
What? They already signed Spaeth. ;) I think they'll be going into camp with 6 total including Heath.

Would definitely like to see another safety. After the starters we have a 1st year player, 2nd year player and a rookie.

Fangupo might be the backup NT.

That was in no particular order, if I had to rank needs I'd list as such:

S

NT

MLB

TE

A few areas that do not need any more depth: QB, RB, WR, OL, CB, DE

I think they will be all over a vet Safety come June 1.

I may be in the minority....but I don't know that I don't like Fangopu the best of any NT they currently have on the roster. That probably says more about the current level of talent on the team at the positon than it does for HF....but I still feel that way. I just don't get it with McLendon and I doubt I ever will. He's okay. Just a guy to me. He's von Olehoffen at NT...he maybe won't embarrass you, but he's better suited to play DE and should be upgraded upon ASAP. As far as :suds: :banned: :drive: :censored: :tfp: :hangover: goes, I doubt he ever pans.

Wide-open race for Steelers' returner job
By Jamison Hensley | ESPN.com

The Pittsburgh Steelers will have competition at running back and outside linebacker this year, although I believe rookies Le'Veon Bell and Jarvis Jones will win those jobs. The most wide-open battle in Pittsburgh is in the return game.

The release of Chris Rainey in January forces the Steelers to find another kickoff returner, and the promotion of Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders to the No. 1 and No. 2 wide receiver spots, respectively, likely means Pittsburgh will go with a new punt returner.

As the Steelers get ready to take the field for the first of three voluntary minicamps this week, you could make the case for around 10 players to compete over bringing back kicks and punts. But, when looking closely at the candidates, I see four as serious contenders to become the new returners.

On kickoff returns, running back and free-agent addition LaRod Stephens-Howling has to be considered the favorite. His role as a returner decreased the past two seasons in Arizona, but he averaged 25.7 yards and scored three touchdowns on kickoffs in his first two seasons in the NFL.

The one returner who could unseat him is undrafted rookie Reggie Dunn from Utah. He set the NCAA record for career 100-yard returns (five) and single-game 100-yard kickoff returns (two).

“He is an exciting player. He ran in the 4.3s on his pro day,” Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said of Dunn at a recent fan forum with season-ticke holders. “We’re excited because the speed (is something) you can’t teach. You have to give that young man the opportunity to prove what he can or can’t do on the field.”

Colbert said he's anxious to see how Dunn can handle punts. According to Colbert, Dunn didn't return many punts in college because Utah had others who were "quite honestly, better during his time there."

The other players who should get the opportunity to return punts are rookie sixth-round pick Justin Brown and David Gilreath. Brown averaged 13.5 yards per punt at Oklahoma and scored a touchdown. Gilreath, who holds the Big Ten for career kickoff returns, also ranked sixth in the Big Ten with an 8.8-yard average on punt returns before going undrafted in 2011. Last season, he returned two punts for a total of eight yards.

There's not as much mystery at returner around the AFC North. The Ravens kept Jacoby Jones and the Bengals re-signed Brandon Tate, but Adam Jones and Onterio McCalebb will push Tate. The Browns are expected to replace Pro Bowl returner Josh Cribbs with Travis Benjamin on punts and Dion Lewis on kickoffs.

from Rotoworld:

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette anticipates third-round WR Markus Wheaton entering camp behind the "learning curve" because Oregon State's late graduation will keep him away from the Steelers until June 14.
NFL rules prohibit players who haven't graduated from college from participating in full-squad offseason workouts until they do. Wheaton did take part in rookie camp, but he'll essentially miss all of OTA season. It's a reminder that Wheaton isn't a serious candidate to compete for a starting job as a rookie.

I don't think Jones wins the starting spot and I don't think there is a competition at RB. Only way Bell isn't the starter is if he gets hurt. Like Dunn but if he can't do punts or catch passes I don't know how he makes it. Maybe they PS Brown and make Gilreath the 5th WR with return duties.

yeah, definitely agreed on both Jarvis Jones and Le'Veon Bell. They might go with Dunn as a returner-only, a la Stefan Logan a few years ago

Only if he proves to be as electrifying in OTAs/camp/preseason as he was in college. I know Tomlin hates burning a roster spot on a guy who only returns kicks.

Heath Miller improving but cautious
Updated: May 22, 2013, 5:23 PM ET
Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Heath Miller knows his football career isn't over, just paused. When the injured Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl tight end will be able to hit the "play" button again is anybody's guess.

Miller included.

While allowing there's "a chance" his surgically repaired right knee could be ready before the season opener against Tennessee on Sept. 8, Miller thinks it's too early to project just when he'll slip on his No. 83 jersey and return to his job as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's favorite target.

"I'm just trying to get better every day, and I'm doing what I've been asked to do," Miller said Wednesday. "And I'm listening to my body, so I'll just progress that way."

Five months removed from a gruesome hit that prematurely ended the best season of his career, Miller's body is telling him to be encouraged. He's already running and walked around the practice field in a T-shirt and black shorts with his right knee wrapped in tape and ice during the second day of organized team activities.

It's a far different view than the last time Miller was on a field. He made a leaping catch in the first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals on Dec. 23 and took a low shot from Bengals safety Reggie Nelson. Miller hobbled to the sideline only to return later only to have the damage become more extensive. He ended up tearing the ACL in the knee and injuring the medial collateral ligament and posterior collateral ligament too.

The road back hasn't been easy. Miller is on an aggressive lifting program to get his right leg back into shape. Just as important is Miller's peace of mind. The pain he can deal with, the uncertainty of what his next step will hold is something else entirely. Miller figures getting a handle on the former will help him with the latter.

"That's the big thing now, the main thing, because after surgery you lose a lot of strength," Miller said. "And then there's some atrophy. So, I want to get it back to where it's as strong as my other leg."

Though Miller insists he's had "no pressure" from the team in terms of his rehabilitation, the Steelers seem to believe he'll be ready sooner rather than later. Pittsburgh brought back Matt Spaeth in the offseason but declined to pick a tight end in the draft even though Notre Dame's Tyler Eifert was available when the Steelers went on the clock with the 17th pick in the first round.

Pittsburgh went with outside linebacker Jarvis Jones instead, with Eifert going to AFC North rival Cincinnati at No. 21. Miller thinks the decision not to select Eifert and his own health are two separate things.

"I think it might be a little too much forward thinking," Miller said. "At least it is for me."

Either way, there appears to be no plans for the Steelers to think about finding Miller's successor. In addition to Spaeth, the Steelers also have second-year Logan Paulson and David Johnson, who is recovering from his own knee issues. They are on the roster to provide depth.

Miller is on it to produce.

The 31-year-old was in the midst of the finest season of his career when Nelson's helmet collided with Miller's knee. He finished with 71 receptions for 816 yards and eight touchdowns and was named to his second Pro Bowl just before prior to getting injured.

Despite the lengthy rehabilitation, Miller has tried to stay upbeat. Play the game long enough, and the odds of staying healthy dwindle. He still has missed just five games in eight seasons at one of the most demanding positions in the sport.

"You're not going to be healthy for your whole career," Miller said. "Guys who are able to do that are few and far between. So, realistically, major injuries are bound to happen sooner or later. You just have to deal with them and move on."

Regardless of his status, Miller is confident the Steelers can put a disappointing 8-8 season behind them.

"I believe we still have enough guys to be good," he said. "Every year, in this league, you're going to lose somebody. So, it is what it is. It's expected, and I don't think anything drastic will happen on our end."

NOTES: LB LaMarr Woodley said he is not concerned with offseason criticism about his health. Woodley has been hindered by hamstring and ankle injuries the last two years and finished with just 4 sacks in 2012, tied for the fewest in his career. "Somebody talking about me doesn't motivate me," Woodley said. "I don't pay attention to it ... I make jokes about it." ... Jones was limited a bit on Wednesday due to a lingering hamstring issue he first experienced while trying to prep for the 40-yard dash prior to the NFL Draft. The injury is not considered serious.

The Steelers now have 5 out of 9 of their draft picks signed. I was under the impression they weren't going to be able to sign these guys until June 1st when the Willie Colon $5.5 million savings kicked in. Maybe there will be a few bucks leftover to sign a veteran S, D-lineman, or LB?

Once all the rookies are signed they should still have over $3 million in space after June 1st. Plenty of room to add a few FAs. I know John Clayton was speculating that we'll be bringing in Steve Breaston once the Steelers get that extra space.

Why? The Steelers have better WRs and returners already.

Haley likes him. He's better than Plax. He could end up as the #3/slot if Wheaton isn't ready. Sanders might ask for too much money and be gone next year.

Rotoworld:

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah believes No. 79 overall pick Markus Wheaton is "perfect" for the Steelers, and compares his toughness to Hines Ward's.
"He fits the new mold they've got there, guys who can win one-on-ones with quickness, but he's also got big-play ability with top speed and feisty toughness," Jeremiah said. "You can't just label him as a possession (or vertical) guy. He can't do all things at an elite level, but he's capable of doing everything." Wheaton should give fading veteran Jerricho Cotchery a run for his money in the battle for No. 3 duties.

FS Ryan Clark hopes to remain with the Steelers beyond 2013.
Going on 34, Clark is headed into the final year of his contract. The Steelers used the No. 111 pick on S Shamarko Thomas, whom they view as Clark's apprentice. Clark is worried about what it might mean for his career if the Steelers let him walk in 2014. "This has always been a smart organization about letting guys go when they feel like they don't have what's left to be here," Clark said. "So we'll see. But I want to finish my career here. I've found a home here."

Sounds like, as far as stabbings go, this is about the best case scenario. in the stomach, no vital organs hit. They're saying he'll miss 6 weeks but should be fine for Camp.

Stupid thug criminals putting our Steelers season in jeopardy.

That noted, maybe there is a silver lining. Life changing experiences like this have the potential to offer growth beyond understanding. FIrst, the Steelers draft him high and give him a "second chance" and now this. Adams may take these events and come back and have an even greater passion to play at an elite level.

BTW. Spent a good bit of time talking to Reggie Dunn. Very good guy with a good head on his shoulders. Seems driven and wants to stick in Pittsburgh. Knows his way onto the team is on kick and punt returns, but wants to move up the WR depth chart.

Jarvis Jones was very nice, very quiet and soft spoken. He also feels like he'll start this year opposite Woodley.

Didn't talk to Terrence Garvin as much. Also friendly and may have some position flexibility between S and LB.

Ben went under the knife yesterday:

Ben Roethlisberger Injury: Updates on Steelers QB's KneeBy Ethan Grant, Bleacher ReportJune 5, 2013

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger missed part of the 2012 NFL regular season with injuries to his ribs and shoulder. This offseason, Big Ben is taking no chances with his long-term health and ability to stay on the field for a full 16-game season. On Wednesday, Roethlisberger underwent minor surgery to have some discomfort in his right knee taken care of, a move that is not expected to keep him off his feet when training camp begins later this summer. Here is head coach Mike Tomlin's full statement on Roethlisberger's surprise surgery: "Earlier today, Ben had minor surgery on his right knee that was the result of slight discomfort this offseason. We advised him to get the surgery done to ensure he will be completely healthy for the start of training camp. This surgery will have no long-term effects on his health."According to NFL.com's Albert Breer, the rehab timetable for this surgery is generally around 4-6 weeks. Goal for Steelers in doing it now was to have Ben ready for camp.Ben's put up remarkable numbers: 29,844 yards passing, 191 passing touchdowns, an 87-39 career record, two Pro Bowls and two Super Bowl victories. During his time in Pittsburgh, the franchise has missed the playoffs only three times. One such time was last season, when the Steelers started rough and ended up losing Big Ben to injuries. Roethlisberger missed three games and Pittsburgh couldn't make up enough ground to catch AFC North playoff representatives Cincinnati and Baltimore. With Todd Haley now in town to run Pittsburgh's offense, the focus for the Steelers will be to find a way to be more productive on that side of the ball. Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL.com reported in late May that Roethlisberger spoke highly of the new changes to the offensive attack, largely because he is involved more in the decision-making.Although the right knee surgery is considered to be minor by many within the organization, nothing is ever minor when players head to the operating table. Hopefully for Steelers fans, a quick and speedy recovery is in order for their franchise QB as the team looks to get back to the postseason in 2013.

In other news:

The Steelers have now signed eight of their nine selections from the 2013 NFL Draft. The only draft pick not signed is fourth round pick QB Landry Jones.

OT Mike Adams was released from the hospital yesterday and is expected to make a full recovery after being stabbed twice in an attempted carjacking. Adams is should be ready to go for the start of training camp.

Doug Legursky was signed by the Buffalo Bills yesterday. Some of us were thinking that maybe the Steelers might bring him back after June 1st as a backup center but the Steelers had been working out Kevin Beachum at center, at least until the Mike Adams stabbing occurred. Legursky was a pretty solid backup but it appeared to me his play slipped badly last season. I still would not be surprised if the Steelers sign a backup center sometime before the season starts.
