Any big surprises? Thought Hanks might get a nomination for Captain Phillips, and thought the Oprah would get one too.

No Inside Llewelyn Davis was a mild surprise too

Looked through my pre-nomination "guess" list and Emma Thompson was a glaring difference. I had her as a dark horse to beat Blanchett

Pretty shocked Phoenix didn't get nominated

They really need to go back to 5 for Best Picture

Side note on this, word is that it was August : Osage County that missed out on the tenth spot. No problem with that flick missing the cut.

I usually try and watch all of the movies nominated. I have no desire to watch Nebraska or Philomena. The others, I've been trying to watch at least one a night. For me it's between Wolf of Wall Street and 12 Years a Slave.

I've heard good things about Nebraska. Philomena not so much (seems like the kind of movie older voters must have picked)

Nebraska looks great. Yeah Philomena is the only one on the Picture list I have no interest in.

Overall a weak year -- nothing like last year. Locks are:

Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club

Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club

12 Years a Slave for Best Picture

Why the objection to Nebraska? I liked it.
Payne has yet to make a bad film. He gets the benefit of the doubt for sure. I'll be watching it before the ceremony.

12 Years a Slave for Best Picture
Best Actor is a tight one between Mcconaughey and Ejiofer. Best Actress is a lock with Blanchett running away with it.

Supporting actress is close between That 12 years chick and Lawrence.

i would bet a lot that Cuaron gets Best Director. That movie was all him.

Not sure Leto is a lock, he was a mild upset at the Golden Globes. Foreign Press sometimes vote differently than actor peers in Hollywood. Agree on McConaughey.

Not so sure about 12 years either, they could throw 2-3 of them in there.

Her snagged 5 including best film, Phoenix would have made a nice 6th nomination. Don't overlook this as one of those films that wins 2-3 Oscars including best picture.

If Jennifer Lawrence wins her second oscar already...

I wouldn't count Adams out for Best Actress. Probably Blanchett but not calling it a lock.

I think Hustle wins Picture.

Going to try and see all the best picture and major acting categories (good amount of overlap) films. Only ones Ive seen so far are Gravity and Dallas Buyers Club. I thought Gravity was solid but didnt really get the hype (I didnt see it in theaters, maybe thats part of it). I thought Dallas Buyers Club was great, especially McConaughey and Leto.

Did you watch Gravity on your phone?

On my TV via hdmi cable via interwebs.

Surprised Saving Mr. Banks got nothing besides score. Would have thought it would have a Best Picture and Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, or Colin Farrell would have gotten nods.

I was thinking the opposite. I think Leto is a lock, I think McConaughey has a lot of competition between early favorite Ejiofer and big names Bale and Dicaprio, especially the latter who has yet to win an Oscar. I have a feeling I'll come away thinking McConaughey was the best performance of the bunch, but I wouldnt call him a lock by any stretch. Plus I dont think many people really considered McConaughey a legit actor until the last couple of years, so that doesnt really help him either Im guessing in the eyes of the Academy.

No kidding. I had no specific intention to like it, but as I was wiping the dust from eyes at the end of the movie, I thought for sure we'd see Emma Thompson nominated.

It was a fantastic movie. Maybe the best I saw all year with 12 Years it's closest competition.

I think Emma Thompson was in a leading role, but not so sure about Hanks. That might be the issue. Maybe they aren't ready to put Hanks in a support role? Not exactly sure how that's determined.

I didn't consider McConaughey a legit actor till Dallas Buyer's Club. His performance blew me away. He will win.

He's been on a strong track the last couple years, check out Mud, The Paperboy, Killer Joe, and to a lesser degree Bernie. He changed my opinion of him with those films, and knocked it out the park with his best performance to date with Dallas Buyer's Club.

Wow, I completely disagree. 2013 was fantastic for movies. So good in fact that there are legit Oscar-worthy nominations who didn't make the cut. Tom Hanks, Robert Redford, or Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor. Spike Jonze for Director. Etc.

really, really good year.

Have you seen Blue Jasmine?

It's a lock
I'm in the lock camp as well, but the suits love Amy Adams

Biggest lock is that Jackass Presents : Bad Grandpa will not win the award it's nominated for. There's no way the academy is going to let them market the film as "Oscar Winning"

David O. Russell has written/directed back to back films where his actors got nominations in all four acting categories. That's really amazing.

Seen all but Paperboy. Yeah, he's gotten better. Really liked Mud. But DBC is what changed my opinion of him.

Great call. He gets great performances out of all of his actors, and it's been great watching him develop his talent
