So who do you guys think the Giants will take at 9?
My guess is Dupree from Kentucky (assuming that Cooper and White are gone)
He has the size that the Giants typically look for at DE
They never take who you would expect or want them them to take ... Any receiver other then Cooper would be a huge mistake.
I think they will reach for a DT or DE that hasn't been talked about as a top 15-20 pick and who will not contribute much.
Don't mean to be negative but I hate the way they draft since Reese took over.
Yeah drafting Beckham and Pugh, what a awful GM.
Look, I'm not a fan of Resse's drafts for the simple reason that he can't draft past the 2nd round. Seems every year they might as well just throw away their 3-7th round picks because they're wasted, typically on big project type players that can't have any real impact on day one. As far as his 1st and 2nd round choices, he's pretty lights out.
2014 - Beckham (Top 3 WR after year 1) & Richburg (Our starting center this year)
2013 - Pugh (Starting RT last two seasons) & Hankins (One of the best young DTs in the league right now)
2012 - Wilson & Randle - This was his worst season, Wilson busted and never really got a chance and Randle just can't learn a playbook.
2011 - Prince & Marvin Austin - Prince is a high level CB and Austin is no longer with the team, not a real hit though
2010 - JPP & Linval Joseph - We all know about JPP & Joseph got a huge contract from MIN last year.
My point is, he has had 3 of these picks miss in the last 5 years most of them were solid. I'm still of the opinion Wilson had the talent, he needed the coaching staff to give him more confidence and then as we know the injury. But Reese will draft more than likely 2 solid instant starters on the team in the first two rounds. The reason people can't stand the way Reese drafts is because he doesn't look at needs at all, just BPA. It's also what makes them damn near impossible to predict. You figure... we're drafting a #9. Lets assume Winston and Mariota come off the board before 9, which I think is likely simply because a lot of teams are kicking themselves for passing on Teddy last year, so they'll overdraft Mariota this year. That essentially puts us a pick 7, so presume the Top 7 on our board looks something like this:
1. Leonard Williams
2. Amari Cooper
3. Vic Beasley
4. Dante Fowler
5. Kevin White
6. Alvin Dupree
As for 7 it could be any number of guys really: Danny Shelton, Trae Waynes, Brandon Scherff, TJ Clemmings, Malcom Brown, Landon Collins, could still be Randy Gregory too.
My gut still tells me they'll end up taking Gregory, it just seems like a very "Reese" pick. Reese is the type of guy to look at Gregory and say "We have the coaching and team leadership to keep him out of substance abuse trouble. He showed up light to the combine due to being sick and still put up amazing numbers in every test." The Giants also strike me as the type of evaluation team to pickup on the fact that most of Gregory's "knocks" in the media are mainly bs. People say he gets slow off the line but a lot of that has to do with the way he was used at Nebraska as more of a run stopper than a all out rusher. He's one of those guys who isn't a Top 3 talent at any one thing but is a Top 10 talent at everything. With the way Spags and the Giants run the defense, this is the type of guy they want... someone who could be lined up all over the field. He can be a down DE who can run stop, rush or drop into coverage, he could be a stand up DE, could swap to OLB etc. he can do everything. The Giants friggin love themselves all around guys who can move. Where as a lot of these other pass rushers like Dupree, Beasley & Fowler are just rush OLB/DEs. That's really all they do.
My draft pick prediction is, Amari Cooper if he is available and otherwise Randy Gregory.
People will freak out and get upset because the 'media' has Gregory slipping. But lets not forget similar to someone like Bridgewater last year, Gregory was originally thought to be the top defensive talent in this draft back in December.
