2016-17 NBA Thread: Finals are over, please go away (4 Viewers)

Other than Murray who would you have taken over him?  Even now, with hindside.  He was the pick there (other than Murray).
"Other than Murray" will end up being a huge caveat. It's hard to argue with their selection of Hield after they traded him and a mid-first rounder for arguably the best center in the NBA, but in a bubble at the time of the draft, I think the obvious pick for them was Murray. Given what we know now, I think Hernangomez would have been in play for them as well as Chriss.

That's fine, but why don't those rights transfer when that hometown team chooses to trade the player? 30 million is a lot to lose because of a decision you weren't a part of.
because they want the hometown team to have an advantage in being able to re-sign the player.

as mentioned above, it is more or less an outgrowth of Durant leaving for the Warriors.  The NBA would prefer to have a star in every city (I guess).  They would prefer not to have superteams.   When a star comes up on FA, they want the home team to be in the best position to negotiate, so they give them the advantage of offering more money.  Current teams have had advantages for a long time (Bird Rights), but this is an additional step.

Also, this only applies to players who have met certain criteria (being all-NBA for 2 of the past 3 years, for instance), not everyone.  It has a very narrow scope, so don't feel too outraged.

I guess shouldn't have said that because it's not really central to my point. Consider a similar case with Player X. Losing 30 million because you got traded seems like BS.
Well, he got traded in large part because his original team didn't want to pay him that $30m, and reportedly that massive contract would have been untreadeable, suggesting - particularly in conjunction with the fact no one wanted to trade anything of value for him on his existing deal - no one else wanted to give it to him either.

unintended consequences, how we love thee.

Yeah, but on the other hand, not sure how much we can generalize from the weird Cousins situation. If Cousins were less toxic there wouldn't have been any concern about the $. I doubt the Pacers/Thunder will have any heartburn about mega deals for George and Westbrook (although they probably should).

I've been wanting Kupchak gone for a long long time. I don't have a clue if Magic is the answer, but I welcome the change.

Also Sac has some odd wins and losses with and without Boogie that had to count in the thinking. They worked over strong Utah and Boston teams with Boogie out, and I don't need to highlight some of the stupid losses with him. I think Cousins is the 2nd most talented big in the game (Counting Brow as a big), but watching the Boston game not long before this trade had me wondering if I was coaching which style I'd prefer to field.  The one without Cousins sure is better team ball, not a better team without him, but... just sayin'.

They want to prevent a Melo to Knicks situation where they sign the max and then force their way out.

Can't even imagine what it's like to be a Warriors fan right now.  In addition to the embarrassment of riches on the roster, their two biggest rivals are terrible and are now being run by people who have given zero indication they're up to the job.

Nice timing of the Magic announcement ;)

Given their signings last offseason, they have no choice but to build cheap if they want any chance to be competitive soon.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. They need to keep their 1st rounder this year first. That's right Magic - it's losin' time!

You are assuming SAC would have resigned him anyway.  If they had already decided on not resigning him the trade cost him nothing.

It's shocking the same people that just gave Deng & Mozgov $34mil/yr for the next 4 years didn't pull the trigger on the Cousins deal.

Weird they're fired NOW as opposed to 7 months ago when they gave not 1 but 2 terrible deals in offseason from hell that'll be talked about for years to come. Enjoy that "veteran leadership"

league history?

Can we at least wait and see who Magic hires as GM before we rake him over the coals? I'd say I hope he's trying to convince Jerry West to be involved as a consultant or something, but I think Kupchak was West's guy. :oldunsure:

Deng/Mozgov/Noah/Biyombo/Turner -- who else? When's the next CBA to allow teams to get out from these idiots? FFS

Some of these teams will be begging for the return of the amnesty clause :)

I couldn't comment as to the Kings-Warriors dynamic, but I don't think the Lakers and Warriors are rivals.  They've only played in the playoffs seven times , three of which were in the 1960's and none since 1991, and the teams haven't been championship contenders at the same time.  The NoCal vs. SoCal animosity which characterizes the Dodgers-Giants, Rams-49ers (and even Kings-Sharks, to a degree) rivalries isn't as noticeable when talking Lakers-Warriors.   Obviously, the Celtics are the eternal rival, and at times I think the Jazz, Kings, and Spurs (and perhaps the Blazers and Suns) have been considered rivals.  Now if by some form of divine intervention the Lakers actually got really good in the next few years, then perhaps a rivalry could develop.

I'll obviously be hoping for the best, but I think handing Magic the keys is a horrible, HORRIBLE decision.

I love the incredible insight and expert analysis you'll always find on @ESPN_FirstTake with Skip, Stephen A. & Cari. Love you guys!

The Bucks just acquired the next Jason Kidd in Michael Carter-Williams.

Happy days are here again! Mike D'Antoni resigns as the Lakers coach. I couldn't be happier!

I assume Warriors fans hate the Lakers because many fans do, plus same division and state, plus SF/LA thing.  Didnt mean to suggest a mutual rivalry thing, just that Warriors fans must feel like pigs in #### right about now

Does this belong here? http://sportsmockery.com/2014/11/magic-johnson-calls-derrick-rose-mvp-candidate/

Kobe should also be in the early MVP talks with LeBron, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis, Carmelo, Curry, Thompson and Rose.

— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) November 5, 2014

Lakers are definitely trading for Rose.
i love the rumor that he wants to bring Kobe into the front office too. :tfp:

I am glad too because they won't remove either of those guys anytime soon. SIxers need to bring back Hinkie to take advantage before the NBA intervenes for the sake of the Lakers.

I can't even imagine what I would think if the Sixers brought on A.I. to run the business side for the Sixers. I absolutely love Allen, but something tells me the Sixers would fall back to the Bynum days with no picks sooner rather than later.

:lmao:   I have to agree with Groovus that I don't want to dump on the Lakers org. too quick, but yeah this is a lot of fun. It would be absolutely awesome if Magic tried to bring on Stephen A. and Skip to be the GM for the team

I'm not on board with Kobe as GM, but comparing him to Iverson is a joke.

Sixers fans, theoretically, would you trade okafor to the lakers to guarantee getting the lakers pick no matter what?

Firing Mitch was brutal.  He's a great with the draft but not so much with FA.  Mozgov and Deng deals were indefensible.

Magic's going to hire Pelinka. Obviously a bright guy but I'm not going to pretend to know enough about him to judge the hire.

would need more. I guess if their tank became more obvious (like trade Sweet Lou) it would be on the table, but definitely need to get more out of the trade then that. I know we are selling real low on Okafor, but that would be a tough pill to swallow seeing the rumors that have floated around etc. have been a lot better.

I would anticipate the Lakers will have competition for the bottom 3. Brooklyn is a guarantee, but Kings and Magic need to join the conversation after the latest trades.

I don't follow basketball as much as most in here, but I would have to think that it would be a conflict of interest to hire an agent who represents multiple players in the NBA to be the GM of a team. I am guessing I am wrong since it hasn't been brought up anywhere, but it seems to open the door a bit for collusion or all kinds of shady things happening.
