2016-17 NBA Thread: Finals are over, please go away (1 Viewer)

Well I'm not talking pure hatred I mean from a competitive stand point. Offseason all those guys were friends went Golfing etc but you didn't see them act like friends throughout the series and glad hand each other like everyone today does. My other issue is the rules overall in the NBA catering to more offense and other things. I'd love to get a thread going if enough people are interested in how to change the NBA from a rules standpoint and other things.
4-point line!

Good job, good effort Silver. State of the league is incredible these days, what with your 3 title contenders (technically 2 without Kawhi). We have teams that are so above and beyond the other 27, 28 teams that they coast through the regular season and don't even care about earning #1 seeds. We have a 41 point halftime lead between 2 of the allegedly 4 or 5 top teams in the league. Excellent job.

How would you fix it, short of blocking signings?  I'm legitimately curious.

Except the Celtics aren't one of the four or five best teams, this is a result of the continued disparity between the Eastern and Western Conference. Advanced metrics pegged Boston as a 48 win team, if they were a Western Conference team they'd have been a six or seven seed.

That's actually what I was going to say. I think if these insane signings keep up, you'll see changes to future CBA's creating new rules on free agency. No idea how they would look, but I think the league would deem it in the best interest of the game to limit signings to some unknown extent if this stuff keeps happening. I think you'll need to see research that shows a dropped off in popularity for anything to happen though. I do believe that will come with a few more seasons of this nonsense.

I know you didn't ask me, but make it easier for teams to keep their stars. Like a franchise tag, I like the Larry Bird rule, but there has to be a better way to limit the exemptions teams can use. Get rid of the trading consecutive picks rule and the protection of picks.

don't interfere with the organizations and suggest they aren't competitive so they are encouraged to get rid of their GM, who was an integral component to bringing a once proud organization out of mediocrity purgatory

A full-strength Miami Heat would've slowed down the Cavaliers. They had size, penetrators, 3-point shooters and a few good defenders.

You have to give it to the celts for fighting to get back into this one
lol, if i'm a Celtics fan, i am very worried. Losing game 1 at home by 20 or maybe little less when it eventually ended should have motivated. Cavs have taken Celtics soul, not sure they will get it back.

The West is trash as well outside GS and Spurs if they have Leonard lol. Cavs would have swept everyone in the west Golden State has played.

They would have slowed down the scoring, but it still would have only taken 4 games.

How bad is the East when only the Pacers have really given the Cavs a game?

Take off your Cavs hating glasses first.
I don't hate on the Cavs at all. They are a great team. If they were in the West they would be up 2 - 0 in the conference finals. Just because they are in the East doesn't make them any less good, but the East is worse than the West and has been for years. Stop thinking that it is a slight against the Cavs or LeBron.

I think a better description is that the East elite teams have been much worse than the West elite teams.  Teams 5-16 in either conference essentially have had zero chance of winning a championship.  Last year the elite were the Thunder Spurs Cavaliers and Warriors.  This year the Spurs Cavaliers and Warriors.  The Cavaliers haven't had to fight through any elite teams until the Finals.

Once the Heat stopped playing Winslow and Richardson due to injury, they realized that Waiters and James Johnson were better than advertised. Not to mention role players like Ellington, Babbitt and McGruder. In the second half of the season, in games that mattered, they beat a full-strength GS, Rockets (x2) and Cavaliers. They had the right formula with Whiteside, penetrators and shooters.

and who ended that big win streak the Heat had.................... :fro:

Cleveland would win the east even without James.

I will be shocked if the finals don't go seven games.  Cleveland has too many shooters and interchangeable parts they can put in from their bench
Actually the Cavs might not even be a playoff team without LeBron.  Do you what the Cavs record is this year when LeBron sits out ?  What their record is since he came back and sits out ?

Something like 0-6 this year and 4-18 since he came back.

They couldn't even make the ####ing playoffs. Get real.

Outside of fans of other playoff teams, I think everyone else would rather watch the Cavs and Warriors play in that finals.
This statement has me wondering. Outside of GS and Clev fans, are people really excited to see the same final for the third year in a row? I have to imagine for most fans not in a GS or Clev jersey, another year of the same ol' is kind of "meh." But maybe that's just me.

Unfortunately the spurs are not elite without Leonard so we are down to 1 elite team in each conference.

and i do think the Celtics org can be called out for this debacle... i hear the idea of not sacrificing your whole future, but the fact that they had 2 years to get some defensive strength in the paint and they didn't shouldn't be ignored

I certainly never grew tired of Celtics/Lakers finals.

Well duh.  But GS was probably going to need at least six games to beat them.  Nobody in the east was going to take Cleveland to six if Cleveland played at max effort.

Yes.  Who exactly do you think is elite from the East?  Nobody can come close to matching their starters and their depth.
You originally said The East has had NO elite teams outside of the Cavaliers the last two years.  I said its actually 3 years without elite teams outside of the Cavs.

huh?  these teams can give their stars like $50 million more than all other teams.

Maybe. The way game 1 was going gs may not have even made it to the finals. GS has had to play one good team in the west over the last 3 playoff runs.
