Not the best analogy. The intl pros finally caught up to the U.S. amateurs. We sent just in our pros and our pros just happened to much better than everyone else's pros.

KD could have gone anywhere he wanted but he picked the team that he couldn't get past. The rich get richer, it's the American way.

This seems to be the way the NBA is headed in this day and age with the creation of super teams,
You are talking about the player, I am talking about the team. The analogy DEFINITELY fits.

A team (Golden State and pre-1988 USA) has won almost without effort. Outclassing teams consistently and constantly over an extended period of time.

Team loses, GSW to Cleve...USA to the Soviets. Team decides to create a Dream Team to prevent that "losing stuff" from happening again. Team convinces player(s) to join collective with shot at "history".

Also, Jerry West is the Shark of Sharks.

STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!

The Knicks have reached an agreement with Mindaugas Kuzminskas, sources confirm. Kuzminskas, 26, is a 6-9 forward from Lithuania.
MINDAUGAS IS LITHUANIAN FOR CHAMPION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111111111111111

I think we know LBJ isn't giving up any money.
Yeah, I think so too.  He's signing one year deals to maximize his earnings until he signs one last big deal.  People will go to the roster flexibility route, which makes some sense just isn't very realistic.  Wade took a cut for him and Bosh in Miami, and while I don't remember the exact details, I'm sure it wasn't anything like this would be.

Heat President Pat Riley went into the offseason stressing more than financial remuneration when it came to Wade.

"Compensation to a player," Riley said, "is not just a way to get paid and live your life. Compensation to a player is about recognition and respect and a place. And so, we know where he belongs.

"When we get down and discuss it will be predicated on a lot of factors. He's a lifer. What he's done in this city over the last 13 years is irreplaceable. So, we want to do the right thing. There's no doubt."

He is not going anywhere unless he absolutely wants out. (And we would demand real assets, not their garbage. Otherwise his BFF can play for peanuts if they want him that bad).

Which is not the case. Sorry Cav's fans. And also....he will be highly overpaid in all likely-hood and this will probably look like a bad contract...but it is what it is. He is the face of this team. I hope he can maintain just the level he had last season. If so, awesome. If not, it was a heck of career here.
Sounds like BS reasoning for Wade to take less than he deserves, which doesn't seem to interest Wade this time around.

So tell me...what does he deserve at age 34 as of January?

20MM per year is not enough? He wants a 3rd year. That is what is being discussed at this very moment. Tell me what team will give him 60MM over 3 years right now other than The Heat?

Name one.

They can resign JR and trade him, can't they?
maybe they could, but if I understand right, his cap hold is 9.5 million, so anything above that that the CAvs pay him does not count against the cap.  But for a different player not on the roster already, the full salary would count toward the cap, so I'm not sure how much that would really help anyone.

I guarantee you that somebody would give him that #.

I just don't know who would do it.

The Heat are getting upset with Wade who sacrificed millions for the good of the team. This is business. Let's dig our heels in and see who has the bigger nutsack.

The only reason for Lebron to take the big pay day is ego at this point. He has enough money to be set up to buy a team when he's done. I think he'd much rather have rings. I can see him taking a huge cut to get Wade in there and take another run at it.
Pressure from the union regarding fair market value etc.

Not sure why Lebron would want Wade anyways from a basketball perspective.  He has declined a great deal the last few years.

every played ball at the Y?

there's the middle aged dude who looks like a bum, wearing goggles and 20 year old high tops with zubaz and a neon pink tanktop on.

he gets on the opposing team and you're thinking it'll be 4 on 5.  then, even though he can't move very well, he's slow as #### and his moves are more awkward than the first time you took a girl's bra off, every time you look up he's knocking a 15 footer down off the backboard and threading a pass between your legs before you even realize he had the ball in the first place

before you know it he's out there for 3 straight hours because nobody can figure out how to ####### stop the guy and he's been running an endless stream of #### talking the entire time only you're not quite sure if you should be offended or not because they're dad jokes par excellence

Wade is that guy

I think the first point is overstated. Free agents will come if the team (a) had money to spend and (b) is winning. Wade may help marginally at this stage of his career on (b), but there's definitely an opportunity cost there with respect to (a) for next year at least, even if the Nuggets have a ton of cap room. If finding minutes isn't a problem and Wade can help them win a material amount of additional games, great, but I'm a little skeptical on both fronts. I'd rather play Mudiay and Murray a ton and hope they develop into budding stars. If so, they'd have a solid coach, proven young talent, and a ton of space next offseason to pitch a couple of big time FAs, maybe even a Blake Griffin type.
That is true of the 2nd/3rd tier of free agents, they are going to where they can make the most money and if there are multiple teams offering similar money, they may choose the place they think they can win. For somebody like the Kings or Nuggets who haven't had a great reputation in the last few years, I really do think signing a premier free agent (you and I realize Wade isn't premier anymore, players are usually a few years late to this realization) would lead to more success in free agency in the immediate future. Players want to go to desirable locations, Denver is a very desirable location for the general population (and for black NFL players FWIW), and I think Wade coming here could show other players that it could be desirable for NBA players as well. The biggest FA signing of the salary cap era for the Nuggets is probably Kenyon Martin (technically a sign and trade), so I really do think this would be a step in the right direction for the franchise.

ETA: I'm also aware there is only slightly better than a zero percent chance of this happening because they aren't a desirable franchise for NBA players.

Gotta love when his highlight vid is 4 mins of him dunking and one pass.  No jumpshots in Lithuania I guess.  Are his hands weirdly small or is it just me...seems like he can barely hold the ball when dunking one handed.
Don't hate the game...hate the man's hands.

Supposedly he's a very good shooter but can't play defense.  So these dunks are just a bonus!

There's this though, so maybe he can shoot too?

Mindaugas Kuzminskas was tremendous last season shooting an eFG% of 74% in transition, 58% on spot up Js, and 53% going 1-on-1 in the post.

YOU DID IT!

Looks kind of like a (white) Corey Brewer in transition...obviously he'll play no defense at all though.

OR JAN VESELY!

A little unexpected - Michael Beasley listed on Rockets Summer League roster...

Unexpected because he had to sober up I assume.

David West to the Warriors on a one-year deal, per source, for vet minimum.

Lol, just hopping from team to team.

With the Knicks having their own 1st next year, seems like a worthy gamble to roll the dice on a couple international guys than spend $20 million on filling out the bottom of the bench with vets.

I don't think the union is factor at all. I think LBJ has just always been about making sure LBJ gets his.

I'm not saying that in a negative or critical way.

Your mom hops from team to team.

As far as dudes from the vet/ring chasers crop go, he seems pretty solid. Getting Pachulia for 3mm was an absolute steal as well. The superteam thing does kill your depth, same with boston in 2010, but getting vets for cheap i think balances it out. I guess its not even really an argument if you take durant or barnes/bogut/festus.

Gs is supposedly still trying to woo Ray Allen, idk.

Do you try to make success as difficult as possible in your career, out of curiosity?
Yes...I get sales quotas of zero and when I get one I think it validates my whole career...

I think you think I'm making a broader statement than I think I am.  I was simply responding to MOP's statement that everybody outside Oakland/SF loses here.  If watching a team this entertaining is losing, sign me up.

But I did get a chuckle out of, "He's different.  He beats to his own drummer.  I'm shocked he's not opting for the traditional route of wasting his prime years with the team that drafted him just 'cause that's the way old people did it."

ETA: Though maybe that WAS MOP's point and I did miss it.  In which case, he did a very poor job communicating his point.
Talk about broad statements and I have no clue about the old people comment...no one is saying he should go to the Kings or Nets...it was always expected he would go to a very good situation...just thought it would be one that would be more of his own...

Wholly untrue.  His mom has been servicing the same team for years.

I got yer back, Tre.

He's not even going to the team that knocked him out of the playoffs!

I do hate David West.

Sorry GSW, I can no longer root for you. It was a fun day and a half though.

Felt like I was flying, but perhaps a little too close to the sun.

Yesterday, Kevin Durant turns his back on solidly Republican Oklahoma to live in Nancy Pelosi's district.  Today, Bush-appointee James Comey declines to indict Hillary Clinton.  Connect the dots, people.

The San Antonio Spurs have traded forward Boris Diaw to the Utah Jazz, clearing the way for the signing of free agent Pau Gasol, league sources told The Vertical.

The Jazz will send San Antonio the rights to guard Olivier Hanlan, whom Utah drafted in the second-round of the 2015 NBA draft.

The $7 million salary in the final year of Diaw's contract allows the Spurs the salary cap space to sign Gasol to a two-year, $30 million-plus deal agreed upon on Monday.
