Lonzo Ball's dad is going to talk his son right on out of the top 3 in the draft. First the "my son is better than Curry, right now" bit and now this. Seems like a GM is heading for headache city with this clown right in the middle of everything. Sucks, because I love watching Lonzo play but his dad is making it more difficult to pull for him.

Nate Duncan and Danny Leroux talked about redrafting the 2016 NBA draft on yesterday's Dunc'd On podcast. They had a consensus on the top 4 in order - Simmons, Murray, Brown, and Hernangomez. They also both agreed that Dunn (sorry Tre, Frosty, and company) and Hield were big mistakes in the lottery, and they also weren't very confident in either Bender or Chriss ever becoming starting caliber players. They were a little more bullish on Ingram, but mostly because of his age and draft pedigree rather than his play.
I agree that those would probably be the top 4 players if draft could be re-done and there is probably a pretty big gap between those 4 and the next tier of guys.

There's going to be a lot of rotation players that come out of the 2016 draft so it's probably not in the conversation for worst draft ever, but it's definitely not great. Especially if Simmons isn't a star, and I personally am not high on him.

Way too early to tell. Dunn could stil lturn out to be a very, very good player. As could Ingram, and others.
It took Myles Turner a year to turn into Myles Turner. Devin Booker made a huge leap between his freshman and sophomore year.
Obviously the book isn't closed on any of those guys, it just doesn't look good right now. Turner and Booker were much, much better than Dunn and Ingram in their rookie years. Dunn's an even bigger concern because he's almost 23 versus those other guys who were 19.

it has been nice to hear recently a few coaches speaking up saying Brett Brown should get coach of the year. He has those guys playing so hard and disciplined it is impressive. He will never win it, but it is just nice to hear him get some credit too. The fan-base hasn't given him enough either, and hearing his peers and other players speaking so highly of him as of late is nice

I've been leaning Gobert over Green for Defensive Player of the Year, but tonight's game has swung it the other way for me. Draymond Green absolutely dominated this entire game from the defensive side of court. It was incredible to watch.

Dubs still in a funk. I know the travel was part of it, but this recent stretch proves why it was necessary to add Durant. The rest of the league was/is catching up to the Dubs....switch, dare everyone aside from the Splash Bros to beat you, and crash the boards. Do those things and the Dubs can be beaten.

If The Heat end up in the post season (which looks likely) and very well may move into the 6th seed as well, Spolstra has to be in the running for Coach of The year. Seriously, they were left for dead at 11-30 and wow, what a turnaround and a heck of a job by this coaching staff to do what they have done with the cast they have. Just a really unlikely season so far.

I get striving for goals and being at the top but there's also something to be said for staying in your lane.

I was in Staples for the loss to Milwaukee the night before. I cannot describe the difference in the Clippers who opened the season looking like a legit contender and the one crashing and burning right now, but it feels like the game has moved beyond Paul, Griffin, Jordan. The two bigs just aren't shooters so they're ten years too late. Defenses do not respect them beyond 5' for DeAndre and 12 for Blake, which puts a ton of pressure on the other perimeter guys. Paul is a leader, an old school point, but he doesn't have that killer instinct you see with Kyrie, Russ, Harden, Steph, and while a decent shooter, he is the worst of that batch. His game is all about D and getting everyone involved on O, but they'd be better off currently if he borrowed some from Westbrook and just did what needs doing because no one else is. They suck. I get to see Lebron live tomorrow/today so, that's good.

Not sure I get your point GB. Roster strength would be reflected in overall record, not in-season improvement.
Also the reason people think the Wiz roster is decent now is because virtually every rotation guy is having a career year under Brooks. This is what people thought about the roster in the preseason. They're the first team in NBA history to get to 15 games over after starting 2-8 or worse.
Not to denigrate Spo and the Heat, who have turned things around in amazing fashion. But Brooks deserves to be in the discussion. As do D'Antoni and Popovich IMO.

I think you are a little too down on the Clippers. In the 1000 or so minutes that Paul, Griffin, and Jordan, their Ortg is 118. For comparison, the Rockets lead the league at 116. Their problem is not how those three are playing, the problem is the number of injuries they've had this year.
And you are also selling Paul WAAAAY short. He's definitely not the style of player that Kyrie, Westbrook, or Harden are, but I would take him over any of those three to be my point guard. He's also shooting 42.4% on threes this year, Westrbrook is shooting a career high 33.6% (Harden is at 35.1%, Irving is at 38.8%, both near career norms). He is also among the leaders in shooting percentage from 16 to the three point line (48%), 10-16 feet (46%), and 3-10 feet (58%). He has shot a better percentage from every range other than 0-3 feet than Steph Curry, and other than 3-point % none of those are anomalies. He's one of the better half dozen shooters in the league and light years better than Westbrook and Harden.
Paul is the same player he has been for the last decade. And that player is still the best true point guard since Magic, and maybe the best true PG ever other than Magic.

I for the most part agree with this. It's probably a four horse race between these guys. For me personally--Spo gets my vote. He's done sooo much more with the roster that's been dealt to him. What he's done is absolutely remarkable.TobiasFunke said:

Pops is probably the least deserving of the 4 mentioned here in my opinion. When the season started--we had all assumed that the Warriors would get the 1 seed if they stayed healthy--and the Spurs 2. If the Warriors suffered injuries--it would not be surprising at all to grab the 1 seed--and here we are. The Warriors battling a big injury--and the Spurs are in a dog fight for the 1 seed. Pops is being his typical self--he's a great coach for a team that has the 2nd best roster in the West. While he's doing a solid job--I think we all assumed that the Spurs would be the 2 seed in the west worse case scenario
D'antoni is a tough call here. I think he's done a wonderful job transforming Harden into a more dynamic player in regards to sharing the ball. While I do think that putting the ball in your best players hands as much as possible isn't a ground breaking strategy--I do think that he has done a very solid job all of the way around. My only hesitation is that I still have a hard time believing the Rockets will have a hard time getting past the second round of the playoffs. I also look at that roster relative to the Western conference and ask myself if they are really over achieving. If somebody told you that the warriors/spurs end up 1-2 in any order--and the clippers were to have major injuries from cp3 and blake--who do you think would round out the top 5? I would easily put the Rockets in that mix of teams that would be competing for the 3 spot. With that being said-I do think he's doing a solid job and he's a solid candidate.
For me--I'd put Spo as the favorite. I'd put Brooks and D'antoni both at one tier below. I'd put Pops as my 4th place candidate.

I think that the preseason totals also take into account injury risk. The wizards went 41-41 with Beal missing fairly significant time last season. In your opinion--how many more games do you think Beal adds to last seasons win total if he stays healthy? Maybe 3-4 fairly easily--possibly more? Don't get me wrong--I think Brooks is doing a fantastic job--but the turnaround that the Heat have accomplished at approximately halfway through the season with no major roster changes--is absolutely remarkable in my opinion.

The case for including Pop would have to incorporate the fact that the reason the Spurs were picked to finish second in the preseason is to some extent because he's there, both in the short term and the long term (how much credit do you give him for guys like Leonard, Mills and Green all vastly outperforming expectations, for example).
It's also similar to the LeBron MVP arguments in some ways. Sure some excellent guys are having amazing years, but we all know who the best player/coach in the league is and has been for years. If they're having a good season they deserve to be in the mix.
Also re: the Wiz, keep in mind that while Beal has been healthier than usual, Mahinmi (their biggest FA acquisition) has missed most of the season. Until the trade deadline Brooks had to keep the team afloat with only five guys who have any business being on an NBA court. Maybe six, according to me and my fellow members of the Jason Smith Fan Club. Spo gets the benefit of Riley, while Brooks has the burden of Ernie Grunfeld.

Spo's story is nice and all, but it doesn't eclipse the seasons D'Antoni nor Brooks have put together. This thread seems to be pu pu'ing D'Antoni, but he's basically taken a team most pegged as a .500% club and made them a threat in the West with the third best point differential in the league.
