2016 ACC Basketball (closed - see 2017 thread) (1 Viewer)

Duke fans- the last two episodes of the JJ Redick podcast that I mentioned previously are pretty much all about Duke, according to the descriptions. One is with Jay Williams and the other is with Chris Collins. I won't be listening to these two so I can't report back, but I'm sure they'd be an enjoyable listen for Duke fans.

Along those lines, Gary Williams did 2 hours with Tony Kornheiser last Thursday prior to the first round tip-off. Had lengthy call-ins from Jimmy Patsos and Jay Bilas. Good listen. Can find it on iTunes or the radio station website - WTEM 980 in DC.

So list so far

Gone - Barber, NC State; Beasley, FSU; Dixon (coach), Pitt

Likely gone - Ingram, Duke; Gregory (coach), GT

Declared but can come back - Blossongame, Clemson

Juniors who might as well throw name out and get evaluated (?) - Hicks, UNC; Meeks, UNC; Jackson, ND; Beachem, ND;

You can put Jackson in the "likely gone" category for sure. And I could see Allen leaving- he's on the cusp of being a guaranteed money guy, I'm not sure his stock can get much higher and there's definitely a risk of it taking a hit when his usage inevitably goes down next year.

The story on the duke boards is that allen is on track to graduate in 3 years. One dude claims to have spoken to a player's father on Saturday  in providence who allegedly offered up that allen is "definitely coming back" without being asked.

In other news, my sister's cousin's boyfriend's friend saw roy williams pass out at 31 flavors last night.

I don't think decreased usage would hurt allen's stock all that much, as I don't think the team that drafts him is expecting a primary scorer. Hes a role player in the league. I do think he can improve his stock by getting better on defense and adding some wiggle to his game (making him a potential combo guard instead of just  an undersized 2 who can shoot and make straight line drives) but he can do that in the nba. If I were him,  I'd go, but each kid has different motivations.

There are plenty of cautionary examples of players who stayed and lost draft position. IMO if Allen is a first rounder, he should go.

I wonder if any decisions will be influenced by impending NCAA sanctions (e.g., UNC, Louisville). Not only players, but Roy Williams, especially if they end the season on a high note (not necessarily a championship, but F4/F2). And what about Pitino, is he safe and/or willing to continue in the face of additional penalties?

When he was in the mid-20s I thought it was a no-brainer he'd leave.  Now Draftexpress has him in the 30-34 range (a whole bunch of Euro's are now populating the 20-30 picks now), so unless he gets a guarantee from Pop or Kerr (he seems like a good fit for either system) or would be happy going in the 2nd round to the Clippers or Celtics (both acquired early 2nd round picks from Philly and the Nets), he should probably come back.  It's entirely possible he keeps improving his 3 point shot enough that he plays his way into the end of the first.

Like I said before, I'd be very surprised if Allen jumps.

But I agree...if you can get first round...might as well.

But I see him staying and Duke coming out Top 5 preseason next year with a powerhouse team...maybe even a bench with a body or two.

From KenPom on Sunday - 2017 preseason top 10

10) Virginia, 9) Indiana, 8) Wisconsin, 7) Oregon, 6) UNC, 5) Kansas, 4) Villanova, 3) Duke, 2) Kentucky, 1) Louisville

Notes:

  • assuming 1) all players in DX mock first round leave, 2) all other eligible players return...

Note - mock  has Allen going 30th to Golden State; does not have any UNC underclassmen

[*]expects changes due to methodology and impact freshmen declarations

Also said, "N.C. State and Ohio State could make big jumps if everyone is back. And Princeton is a mid-major to watch. 2-bid Ivy possible."

surprising update to list - Martin twins leaving NC State. Don't get it.

LOL now Abu.

pure comedy
I assume that Abu is just testing the NBA market he will probably be back

I have no idea what's going on with the twins. I would  guess one of them knows he wouldn't get much playing time next year so they are both leaving

Yeah that was an abysmal call. Just brutal

Edit: actually left arm pushoff. Good call

Holy christ.  Are you kidding me?   First Jeter, then Kennard just with stupid fouls.

Defense looked pretty good.  Weathered the two early fouls on Plum.   Allen doesn't look right out there.  Can't see them winning with him playing like that.

Duke playing awful but not down too much.  Still...way too many dumb mistakes.

Ingram keeping them alive.

Allen disappearing...low energy...very odd for him.

Plumlee doing well but man those were two of the dumbest early fouls you can make.

Then Kennard with some dumb fouls as well.

Hopefully K will make some adjustments at half...gotta get Allen driving more and kicking out.

Need penetration.

Duke gotta keep driving...get someone on Oregon in foul trouble.

Make them have to substitute and get out of this rhythm.

They're finally doing it but waited so long to start.

Bacon declared at FSU last night but could come back. He won't though.

Hamilton is really something else.

Oregon hit all of their 3's it seems.

And they played that zone perfectly by finding the seams and dishing perfectly.

Duke just could not get out of the zone...not enough bodies.

I didn't like their offensive plan either...seems like it was just "get it to Ingram" most of the time.

Not enough Allen early enough...didn't get Oregon in foul trouble and cause them to have to shift their lineup any.

Oregon stayed in rhythm all game...Duke didn't do much to change that.

Oklahoma was going to smoke whoever won this game anyway, in my opinion.

I'm happy with where Duke made it...would've been nice to make it one more step.  Suliamon cut, Gbinije transferred, Tyus jumped before I'd hoped, Amile hurt forever...just not enough there to have a deep run this year.  I can't wait to see what next year looks like if we have a full team.  Really want Allen to return and we'll be fairly solid top to bottom.

Fun season at times due to the fight they usually showed but very frustrating as well. Every game, you could just count that plays that didn't get made that would have gotten made had Jefferson been in there. (rebounds, defensive rotations, etc). Just tough to watch sometimes. Its just really really tough to win when your only 2 interior guys are Marshall Plumlee and Chase Jeter.

Ingram was fun to watch and will be a really good pro. Plumlee played his heart out but just doesn't have the necessary basketball skills. Jones was beyond awful post-ankle injury (really hope K's love for him doesn't shoehorn him into the starting 5 next year. He just isn't good enough) and Kennard and Thornton were just inconsistent/bad at times. I obviously had pretty high expectations for Allen this year and he exceeded them. If he comes back, awesome. But I'm not holding my breath.

Glad that Jefferson will get a 2nd shot at his senior year alongside a really talented squad next season. Even if Allen doesn't come back, they'll be in the top 5 all year and have a really good shot at taking it down.

Oregon played well tonight and has some really nice pieces. In a down year, they have as good a chance as anyone to win it. I don't think they win tonight if Duke brings even their B game (probably played a C- type game tonight, partially because of Oregon's very good defense) but they're pretty solid.

To be fair, had Gbinije stayed at Duke, he would have graduated last year.

I think the bolded is a bit of an understatement. If Allen comes back and Giles' knee is right, they'll be an absolute juggernaut.  Legitimate threat to win 35+

Ah...guess him playing at Cuse this year made me wish he was still at Duke.

Call when I start celebrating other Pac 12 wins other than Oregon.  That is the only team I root for.
All I know is that I didn't go into the thread for your so-called "conference" and start static.

You brought it here...I quoted you and flung it back at you.

I'm 100% certain that you haven't watched Oregon play one game this year.  Keep drinking the ACC gatorade.  Duke will be lucky to get by Baylor and if so they will get creamed by Oregon.
Yeah, meant to bump this one.  ACC has been very good this year.  I just knew Oregon matched up very well with Duke.

Enjoyable tweet from Fayetteville Observer writer post-Duke game:

Brandon Ingram walks out of #Duke locker room. Oregon fan in all black is standing nearby.

"Good game, Brandon." - Phil Knight

So I'm sure this "coach k lectured Dillon brooks" is gonna be a thing for the next week.

K flipped on the reporter who asked him about it in the press conference. Basically denied that he said it and then deflected by going into a whole "thank you to the volunteers who make this possible" routine.

If he actually said it, he shouldn't have.  Don't need to coach another team's players and it comes off as sour grapes. Oregon did some flexing last night but I think it was celebratory rather than taunting. Brooks making a 30 footer to beat the shot clock with 5 to go was kinda emblematic of the night
