***2016 MLB Playoff thread: Cubs win for first time since sliced bread hit market (1 Viewer)

The new format is too young to determine if a long layoff is bad for the division winners.

Maybe eight playoff teams with the first series = three games.  I think that would be really good postseason baseball.

NYY@TEX, SEA@CLE, DET@BOS, BAL@TOR, PIT@CHC, MIA@WAS, STL@LAD, SF@NYM

Teams like Seattle (87 first order wins) and St. Louis (88 first order wins) are deserving of a chance too.
You just let 2 sub .500 teams into the NL playoffs.

No thanks.

:lmao:   regular season W/L in baseball doesn't mean #### for the postseason ESPECIALLY when you beat a bunch of garbage to sneak into the postseason.
You seem a little confused about who snuck into the postseason

Mets 17-10 in September, SF 13-15

Whichever one is going to beat them.

My boxing coach is a die hard White Sox fan--southside Irish guy.  He told me the two best days of his life were:

1) When the Sox won the WS in 2005; and

2) When the Mets swept the Cubs in the NLCS last year.

I can't make this stuff up.

You can't possibly be this stupid without it being shtick.
You're right. This is all shtick. Everyone knows that a 17-10 Sept record to get the #1 WC is the epitome of sneaking into the playoffs.

Especially when they're playing the likes of Marlins? Those guys and their 12-14 record in Sept? Pure garbage. And don't get me started on that Braves team and their 16-10 Sept record. Total cake walk playing those guys, just ask the Tigers

Talk about playing garbage teams - SF playing the likes of powerhouse teams of Colorado, San Diego, Arizona during this time.

:lmao:

To be fair, they had the Dodgers twice and the Cubs once down the stretch. So their stretch run was much more difficult. Its just silly to dismiss the fact that the Mets went out and won the games they did. Especially when 2 of the 4 teams he called out were more than capable of going out and winning games against quality teams.

Mets had the best record since 8/20!

What happened on 8/18 and 8/19 when they lost to Bumgarner and Cueto?

Nothing - that doesn't fit our narrative!

I love your narrative of blind assumptions and name calling.
lol don't post stupid #### then.

Regular season W/L means almost nothing in the postseason.  Pitching usage is completely different with the day offs.  You can maximize IP from your stud pitchers in the pen because of days off between games and you line up your best SP which doesn't happen in the regular season.

A healthy Mets rotation could have competed with anyone in the postseason, but they aren't healthy.  I don't think their SP depth is good enough right now

+200 is ridiculous IMO

If someone uses any part of their team's normal regular season W/L record as support for the postseason success, they should be banned from talking about baseball.
You suggested that the Mets snuck into the playoffs. There's really only one way to counter that argument and its with what happened down the stretch of the regular season. Not once did I suggest that it would have an impact on what happened in the playoffs.

Anyone that suggests restructuring the playoffs to allow sub .500 teams (yes, that's plural) in should be banned from talking about baseball.

Yes, let's counter argue that the Mets snuck into the playoffs by continually bringing up the Giants who had absolutely nothing to do with what I said.

I'm a Red Sox fan and despite us outscoring any other team, and any team not named the Cubs by 100 runs.... I just don't see how our arms hold up enough to give us a real shot. Will see....

Allowing 14 teams with a winning record a chance at the WS is better than only 10 teams.

There are only a few select numbers that can be used to create a reasonable postseason bracket, but you aren't smart enough to realize that.

How does a guy from MINNESOTA root for the Mets?
I grew up in eastern PA and my first memory of baseball was the Mets winning the world series when I was 3 years old (and 3 year old me liked their colors).

My allegiance only grew stronger when I soon learned/experienced how awful Philly fans were and I enjoyed rooting against their rival.

What happens if three teams tie for the wild card?
A play-in game on Monday.  If it was a 3 way tie for the 2nd wildcard you'd get a Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday wildcard game.  Like Eephus said, wish there was a game today.  Tigers and Cards almost gave us at least one extra game, but alas...
