This is why the loss to Iowa, as bad as it was, isn't as important as people are making it out to be. The committee looks at losses, but not as much as they look at wins. They want 4 teams capable of winning the playoff. All teams are capable of losing it. Not having a bad loss on your resume is not as good as having big wins on your resume. 

Well it sounded good when you wrote it but the committee disagrees.

Clemson +2 won't last too long I don't think.

I'm happy they did what they did. OSU would have gotten trounced, and by lowering the bar to let Alabama in, they just fanned the flames of needing to expand the playoff.

All of them do. That's the problem. Nearly all the teams only schedule one decent out of conference game. If you want more decent out of conference games, then punish them when their one decent OOC game ends up being a dud. There shouldn't be cupcakes on any team's schedule. unless they don't give a #### about the national championship.

Alabama's best win is 3 loss LSU, then Mississippi State.

They had good intentions scheduling FSU to start they year but yeah 6-6 oops.

Sure but there's no reason to schedule those. If OSU scheduled a MAC team and is 11-1 instead of 10-2, they make it in over Alabama.

You gotta play them. Probably kept OU out last year but that's how it goes. Gives you some leeway and lets you drop another game if you win. 

I don't look at Mercer and think Bama should have played another solid OOC game. They scheduled Florida St, Fresno, and Colorado St. That's perfect scheduling. I look at Mercer and think they should have played another SEC school. Maybe this year that would have been UGA and we'd have a lot more information to base this decision on. Or maybe it would have been UF or whatever and they would have won by 30 and it wouldn't be much different. It's the SEC's fault - they need to go to 9 conference games.

He's saying he agrees it's a net negative overall. There are other factors though. Playing good competition makes you better. Maybe the results of the other games aren't the same if those big games don't happy early in the seasoneed, who knows. I am glad OU plays those games regardless. We will get to an 8-teamer with all P5 champs soon enough, and the firet few weeks will be packed with those games.

Like I said, I agree it's probably negative EV, but you're using some serious results bias here.  If OU had dropped another game this year that OSU win would probably still have gotten them in whereas without it they'd have had no chance.

Fix is 8 teams, conference champs are seeded 1-5, quarterfinal games are on campus. So you can get in without winning your conference, but you're going on the road in the playoff.
