2017 College Football Thread: Hawaiian QB devastated to find out Jesus was "kinda rooting for Georgia"

Nebraska should go back to this offense. They get better recruits. Why go 7-5 in a prostyle offense every year?

That's what's so frustrating - Johnson can't get the recruits.  Understandable, but I'd love to see what he could do with some elite talent.

But this offense is really about smart disciplined recruits. It's about people knowing exactly where everyone else is and no free styling.

True. I get that. But it worked before, obviously different eras.

I just don't see the point in them being the 45th-best passing offense nationally.

What is the best way to defend against this offense? Does it work against great defenses like Alabama and Florida State?

Those were the early years when he inherited Demaryius Thomas with Dwyer/Nesbitt (and had Burnett and Morgan on D too).  Even with Stephen Hill and Darren Waller they were able to throw more deep one on one plays that felt like they had a better chance to hit.  I would take a big elite WR over getting a top back given the choice.  But honestly this offense is all based on having a good QB.

Alabama?  Hell no their DL would eat our OL up.  We've competed well against FSU in recent years though.   The teams that usually whip us having dominate DL that break up the option in the backfield.

Agree - the QB is the man in this offense.  Everybody else just has to play hard and block.

So initial blocking is the key? Would it make sense to blitz then?

Yes, it's stupid not to if you are getting picked apart like this.  D Coordinators hate to do it because it can backfire and make you look silly against this offense if they pitch it and go 80 yards.  But, if you get penetration you can really mess up the timing and it's very easy to cause a bad pitch.

UMass did this very thing against Georgia Southern in the '98 1-AA championship game when Johnson was the coach there. Don Brown (now Michigan's DC) was the D coordinator and of course he's very aggressive with his blitzes. In fact, there was one particular play in which they got so much penetration that the linebacker actually deflected the pitch with his hand and recovered the fumble.

And just another comment about OU's wishbone.  Nebraska devoted some time to it every week during practice, and still couldn't stop it most of the time.
That was one of my favorite rivalry games growing up, and they rarely even play each other anymore. I hate that.

Surprised guys aren't leaving the field with rubber in the eyes. Every play to the ground seems to kick up a ton of rubber dust

Tennessee has that big bucket because all their fans are white trash right?  Dumbest thing I've ever seen.  Tennessee fan is better when they become Bama fans rooting for the SEC than the bucket.  Godspeed.

Surprised Tennessee is running it slow here - no room for error
