Sub in Auburn for UGA and I agree. Auburn’s DL completely neutralizes what UGA wants to do.

Maybe if they played better games out of conference.  There's no reason they couldn't have played 2 out of the top teams in the southeast.  They could have handily beat Florida and FSU this year.  I don't know that those would have put them in the BCS but the argument would be stronger.  A win against Miami, Georgia, Bama or Auburn and they'd be in (IMO). 

But I do think the BCS needs to move to 8 teams with the best conference champs getting seeds 1-4. Understandably the season gets even longer for the top teams but imagine a playoff:

1. OU vs. USC

2. Clemson vs. UCF

3. Wisconsin vs. Alabama

4. Auburn vs. Miami 

Actually I'm not sure how it will look next week, but that's just an initial attempt.

Nebraska isn't currently there, but that's a top 5 football tradition.  Top 10 at worst. 

Florida doesn't come close unless you only count 2000-on. 

That said, I do think the Gators are possibly in a better position to succeed going forward.  Easier recruiting for one.  Don't know about the money but presumably so.

It hurts to say this as a bama fan, but Alabama should not be in the top 4

What does any school have other than tradition?    Tradition is what makes a school look good for a recruit or a coach.   If a school has a tradition of winning most recruits and coaches would want to be there right?   What else matters?

The genesis was Timschchet saying Florida is a better coaching job than Nebraska. I asked if it’s because of the money. That’s a genuine question, understanding that I have little knowledge and no opinion as to what might be important to Scott Frost. That’s when Cappy said “better tradition better football program in every single way.” Which is of course just an invitation for another side debate, which is what makes college football great - the endless debates. 

On a related note, I’ll say once again the old New Year’s Day bowl tie-ins I grew up with are still far better than anything that’s come since, the BCS circus and its playoff progeny, and that will undoubtably continue to be true when we move to an 8 team playoff, 12, 16 and more. Anyone who thinks a bigger playoff will solve any problems or answer any questions, or that there are any problems that need solving or questions that need answering (or ever were any) is kidding themselves.

UCF was supposed to play Georgia Tech but it was cancelled because of the hurricane.

The irony is that a P5 team would have gotten ripped for scheduling UCF two years ago when they were 0-12, and now UCF is getting ripped for not playing a strong out-of-conference schedule. It sucks for the G5 schools.

It's maddening to listen to people complain about scheduling.  OOC scheduling is done years in advance and it can be damn hard to find suitable bed partners.  Knocking UCF for their OOC schedule is asinine.  Are they supposed to have a crystal ball to peer into the future? 

This is the year a UCF should be considered.  Not a 2 loss team.  IMO.  Otherwise this whole thing is a farce.

You don't think a two-loss team that has beaten #1 twice in the past 3 weeks should be considered over a team whose best win is USF? Come on. 

 
Locally, the Bammer tears and sour grapes are glorious. Man this fan base has forgotten how to lose with dignity. :lol:  

I take that back... most of the folks I know who went to Bama and have lives are bummed but grounded about it. The trailer-dwelling hills-have-eyes group who have never set foot in Tuscaloosa on a weekday are having a full on meltdown.

You’re watching, or not watching, the wrong sport.  UCF has had an incredible season, but they would be double digit point underdogs to Auburn.

UCF has done nothing wrong. Unblemished.  

Auburn couldn't beat LSU, something Troy had no problem doing.   

If the other conferences outside of the Power 5 don't have a shot at the playoffs, that's fine, but let's stop this farce that they even belong.  Give them their own playoff system.

GT gave them many options to play the game but frost wanted nothing to do with it.  The hurricane was a factor but the game could have been played.

Look, I get the system we have in place, but I would be happier if we just told schools like UCF or Boise St. that they have no place at the table, even if they win every game by a bunch.  And maybe they should know that already as a condition of playing in a non Power 5 conference, but to my knowledge nobody from the committee has ever said as much.  If those schools have no shot to compete for the playoffs, maybe create a system just for them and stop ranking them with Power 5 schools. 

 
IF UCF wins next game they will have a better win than all of Alabama's according to polls.      Memphis is ranked 14.   WTF!  :lol:  

Alabama's best win is against MSST by a TD who is ranked 16       Crazy season.     Sucks to be Alabama this year so many weeks at Number #1 and have to hope for someone to lose to backdoor your way into playoffs.

what don't you understand?   Are you trying to say that preseason polls don't matter?     Alabama talking heads keep talking about beating "at the time" number 3 FSU.   

 
I want to preface this by saying I am NOT an Alabama fan. I almost always root against them (it was easier the last couple years when they had Kiffin). The last time I rooted for Alabama was that National Championship Game a few years back against Notre Dame- and when Auburn had that despicable Cam Newton. Yesterday, I rooted for Auburn, and was happy with the outcome. 

But all of the people, here and elsewhere, suddenly arguing that Alabama didn’t beat anybody, that they don’t deserve consideration for the playoffs- where were they BEFORE yesterday? If they had argued a week ago that Alabama wasn’t that good a team, well, they would have been laughed at, but at least they’d have some credibility now. 

 
I have no idea if Chip Kelly will end up being a good hire for UCLA. He’s kind of a jerk, and I don’t like him, even as I admire his record, so we’ll see. 

But it’s already gratifying to hear USC fans in the local newspapers and radio stations whining this morning. Music to my ears. 

 
I think a lot of people were questioning Alabama's resume before yesterday, but they kept falling back on the "eye test" argument. Such is the case when people shift the goal posts to try to fit their argument. Big wins and SOS are crucial, except when they aren't. Much like winning conference champions are big, except when it didn't matter last year.

That's why many of us want to know if it's supposed to be the four best teams, or four best seasons. They're not necessarily the same thing.
