I want to preface this by saying I am NOT an Alabama fan. I almost always root against them (it was easier the last couple years when they had Kiffin). The last time I rooted for Alabama was that National Championship Game a few years back against Notre Dame- and when Auburn had that despicable Cam Newton. Yesterday, I rooted for Auburn, and was happy with the outcome. 

But all of the people, here and elsewhere, suddenly arguing that Alabama didn’t beat anybody, that they don’t deserve consideration for the playoffs- where were they BEFORE yesterday? If they had argued a week ago that Alabama wasn’t that good a team, well, they would have been laughed at, but at least they’d have some credibility now.

Lots of people have been mentioning Bama's meek SoS in the last few weeks in scenarios where people were considering what would happen to them if they didn't win out.

They went 7-5 and will go to a bowl game for the 5th time in 6 seasons under Graham. That's about as good as it gets for Arizona St.  Not sure they are a destination job for anybody.  Maybe they'll hire Les Miles or Dennis Ericson again.

Such is the case when people shift the goal posts to try to fit their argument. Big wins and SOS are crucial, except when they aren't. Much like winning conference champions are big, except when it didn't matter last year.

That's why many of us want to know if it's supposed to be the four best teams, or four best seasons. They're not necessarily the same thing.

Couple of 10-win seasons under Graham, which is why it's a lot odd they pulled the trigger now after they seemingly are starting to turn the corner again a bit.

Erickson had a couple of pretty good teams a decade ago, but they could never beat USC or Oregon when it mattered.

But no, they never were able to continue the momentum of that great "Jake the Snake" team.

When I say it seems like it should be a better job ... Great weather (OK, maybe too hot), fantastic co-eds (maybe too hot ... just kidding), a good but not impossible division.

Rumors starting to focus on Sumlin there. That will be interesting.

It really is a mystery.  Great weather, hot coeds, nice town (from what I've heard, it's a place I've always wanted to go as I've heard the scenery is unbelievable). And yet year after year they are the epitome of mediocre football.

It doesn't sound great, but he won at Rutgers and finding the right coach is really hard sometimes just seems like a crapshoot. The real slam dunk hires are incredibly rare. The hires that appear to be great usually don't end up being so. Even for the absolute elite programs, finding a great coach is incredibly difficult.

Schiano has been good before, it's been a while and his name isn't hot right now, but I don't see why he can't be as successful as everyone's favorite hire (the hot shot coach of mid-major coming off a huge year).

I've come to think there are really only two types of jobs in college football, no matter how much we may debate the relative attractiveness of jobs. Those that can keep a great coach when they find them and those that can't. The Studs and Cucks, if you will. The Studs are about 15-20 programs with the cash and title path to keep a winning coach from being poached barring the NFL or a "mama, I'm coming home" scenario. All the rest of us are just pissing in the wind. Many other places "should" be an attractive spot, but aren't (like my school, UNC). Solid runs every once in a while, but mostly we're going to hire and fire mediocre coaches every half decade or so. And when that day finally comes, if ever, that we find the great coach, we're just going to lose them anyway when a Stud backs up the Brinks truck. So, even the successful times don't ultimately matter all that much.

He gets hung up in his emotions that take over his actions without regard for the consequences. That may be a faulty comparison but its my comparison. Time will tell.

 
Per Deadspin, Auburn was fined 250 long by the SEC for allowing their fans to storm the field.

Give him three years, Vols fans will think he is the best coach in the country,  Schiano is made for college football, he will do a good job at UT, just wait...

 
Kevin Sumlin was considered a slam dunk hire for most any program, what, 3 years ago? Anybody that thinks they are sure of how a new college coach's tenure will go is probably an idiot.

BTW, I hate UT and hope Schiano sucks.

Anyone who thinks a bigger playoff will solve any problems or answer any questions, or that there are any problems that need solving or questions that need answering (or ever were any) is kidding themselves.

I'd just prefer the debate to be about the #8 team instead of 4, and for teams like UCF, Western Michigan or MTSU to have a remote chance of playing for the trophy.

Problem is, he should have won more. Some of those teams were way more talented than the record indicated and he also fattened up on ####ty OOC games and the post-defection Big East. Way too many WTF in conference games. Despite being a defensive guru, he never figured out how to handle the spread and also couldn't get an OC to stick around because he's a micromanager. 

He's a good program builder. Would work well with a low P5/G5 job.

Just because he's a good person doesn't mean he's not embarrassing. My wife embarrasses me sometimes. She's still a good person. I embarrass her sometimes too. 

He could sponsor 100 full scholarships and he would still be an attention whore.

Tennessee pols, students furiously try to block Schiano over Sandusky link

Greg Schiano is not yet officially the Tennessee coach, but the state is trying to run him out.

In the hours after reports leaked the former Rutgers and Buccaneers head coach was finalizing a deal to become Tennessee’s head coach, two state politicians publicly blasted the decision, saying the university must hold itself to a higher standard than hiring Schiano — a coach whose connection with Penn State’s child sexual abuse scandal has been questioned. Also on Sunday came a small protest at the University of Tennessee in which students marched and called for athletic director John Currie to be fired.

The campus’ iconic rock — “The Rock — was painted over to read, “Schiano covered up child rape at Penn State.”

“Our Tennessee standards mean something, and a Greg Schiano hire would be anathema to all that our University and our community stand for,” tweeted Eddie Smith, representative of the 13th District in Knoxville. “I sincerely hope that these rumors are not true, because even serious consideration would be unacceptable.”

Jason Zachary, representative of Tennessee’s 14th district, went a step further, saying he already had reached out to the school.

“I have reached out to @John_Currie and others in administration at UT expressing that WE as a TN Community do not approve of Schiano. #higherstandards,” Zachary wrote.

The politicians’ statements did not explicate exactly why hiring Schiano would be unacceptable. However, before Schiano resurrected Rutgers in the 2000s, he was an assistant coach with Penn State from 1990-95, when he overlapped with disgraced coach Jerry Sandusky. The question has been whether Schiano knew the truth about Sandusky, who since has been convicted of serial sexual abuse against children.

Schiano has strongly denied being aware the defensive coordinator was a pedophile who preyed on children on campus, yet former Penn State graduate assistant Mike McQueary testified former assistant coach Tom Bradley said Schiano told him he saw a molestation happening in a Penn State shower.

“I can’t remember if it was one night or one morning, but that Greg had come into [Bradley’s] office white as a ghost and said he just saw Jerry doing something to a boy in the shower,” McQueary said, according to testimony unsealed last year. “And that’s it. That’s all he ever told me.”

Schiano has had a long life in football since his Penn State days, including a two-year NFL stint with Tampa Bay. After he was fired, he latched on with Ohio State, where he has served as defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

 
I missed the question earlier about Florida vs Nebraska. I assumed that Florida is a better job because of recent history and much easier recruiting. My wife’s whole family is from Nebraska and diehard Big Red fans, so I’m sure they’d argue about this. But high school kids today have no idea who Tom Osborne is. Florida, though, is still relevant, even in my neck of the woods: Long Beach Poly’s 5 Star QB, a transfer from Oaks Christian, is a Gators commit. 

I think Kevin Sumlin is a fine coach who gets a bad rap for being in the toughest conference in all of football. If the Bruins hadn’t hired Kelly, I would have been quite happy with Sumlin.

Wait, let me understand this: Tennessee is not going to hire a head coach because someone said he might have known about pedophilia, but at the same time Alabama is going to elect a United States Senator who is guilty of pedophilia?

Anyone watched Rutgers football lately? I did yesterday, when MSU made lots of really stupid mistakes and beat them 40-7. And earlier this year when they became the first Big Ten team ever to lose to Eastern Michigan. And last year when they got blown out by a really bad MSU team. I'm personally of the opinion that Rutgers is so bad the Big Ten should have its Power 5 status revoked just because of their presence. And Schiano won there. That's something. Doesn't necessarily make it a good hire, but it's something.
